Just go to Minooka/Evanston or Lockport/Stevie and enjoy the off week. Even us fans need to rest up and heal. Not liking this! I know teams get to rest and heal up but as a fan I'm not a fan of it!![]()
Back in the day many CPS teams would play Saturday. The pairings would get picked. Then they would play on Wednesday. Most got beat in the state playoffs. Then they’d play Saturday in the city playoffs & if they kept winning play Wednesday then Saturday again. Even if they got knocked out in round 2 or quarters they’d play all those games in a short time. Julian once played 16 games in a season I believe the year 89? they blew out FenwickIt's sure a far cry from the Iron Man Age, when we started the playoffs with 3 games in a week (8 days).
I already missed the Wednesday games, this will make it worse.

They only had those for 2 years??? Or was it longer? It's sure a far cry from the Iron Man Age, when we started the playoffs with 3 games in a week (8 days).

Not sure when it started and stopped but it was for several years I knowThey only had those for 2 years??? Or was it longer?
I know I played in year 1 of that format. I only played 1 way as a DB so it was easy for me. I don't recall any complaints but then again we didn't have internet at that time.Edgytim wasn't long out of diapers.
Edit: AI says from 1974 through 1993 for Wed/Sat playoff format. but I don't think that's accurate. I thought year 1 was the 1986 season?
Most college coaches love bye weeks. These coaches will figure it out, it ain't rocket science.
No Gately DogsNow I'll have to make my own hotdogs!
I remember having a talk with Joe Schiessler who was a RB for Br Rice in 1991. He was about 90% of their offense that year and they were having their first decent season in many years and Friday they had a must win to either make the playoffs or improve their seed, then they played Wednesday in the mud against HF and pulled out a win, they played Saturday against Andrew in the mud and lost. He said he had over 100 carries in a week and was just beat to hell. It's sure a far cry from the Iron Man Age, when we started the playoffs with 3 games in a week (8 days).

I am not sure, that sounds like it's not far off.Edit: AI says from 1974 through 1993 for Wed/Sat playoff format. but I don't think that's accurate. I thought year 1 was the 1986 football season?
I don’t think they seeded them back then but I get what you’re saying.I remember having a talk with Joe Schiessler who was a RB for Br Rice in 1991. Its not a vacation... 5 days of stress free practice is a gold mind!~Looking forward to hearing about programs who practiced all five days and went regular time instead of using the bye for actual rest.
I don't remember the reason why, it was the 6-3 era to get in so maybe that was it, but it just stuck out that a lot of these players back then, especially in the era of big featured running back, took a lot of punishment that week. They never complained though, until years laterI don’t think they seeded them back then but I get what you’re saying.
We thought getting to play Wednesday was a reward and excuse to miss school.I don't remember the reason why, it was the 6-3 era to get in so maybe that was it, but it just stuck out that a lot of these players back then, especially in the era of big featured running back, took a lot of punishment that week. We would get pulled out of class on Monday and Tuesday of that week to practice during the school dayWe thought getting to play Wednesday was a reward and excuse to miss school.
YES!!!!! And it was usually an awesome first couple weeks of fall weather day.We thought getting to play Wednesday was a reward and excuse to miss school.
If we are talking about the same era (late 70's early 80's) 6-3 would no even get you close to the playoffs, unless you were conference winners.I don't remember the reason why, it was the 6-3 era to get in so maybe that was it, but it just stuck out that a lot of these players back then, especially in the era of big featured running back, took a lot of punishment that week. As a matter of fact, JCA/JCHS finished in a 3 way tie for conference champs in either 1976 or 1977:If we are talking about the same era (late 70's early 80's) 6-3 would no even get you close to the playoffs, unless you were conference winners.
1) Confrence winners got in
2) 8-1 would only get you in (for sure) if you conference winners
3) 7-2 if you were conference winners or co-champs
4) 6-3 teams in the playoffs was very very rare
Back then there were not just half as many classes, but there were half as many teams in each class. AKA only 25% of the teams that make the playoffs (before this year with the extra 16 teams) Now it's more like 15% of the teams as this year.
Wed/Saturday was definitely still a thing in 95 and I believe a year or two afterI am not sure, that sounds like it's not far off.
I would have guessed 1974 through 1989. It seemed like quite a while.
I challenge this. I thought '90 or '91 was the last year. I was a freshman in '96 and it was definitely done by then.Wed/Saturday was definitely still a thing in 95 and I believe a year or two after
In 86 Joliet Catholic got in with a 6-3 record. I think we got in because we tied for the conference title with Marist and St Pats.If we are talking about the same era (late 70's early 80's) 6-3 would no even get you close to the playoffs, unless you were conference winners.

I Guess AI was right. I knew it was close.
That's only for the 70's and early 80's, before they:In 86 Joliet Catholic got in with a 6-3 record. I think we got in because we tied for the conference title with Marist and St Pats.
Edit-After further review, the playoffs expanded in 1985 from 16 to 32 teams. So it then became more common for 6-3 teams to make the playoffs
That's only for the 70's and early 80's, before they:
1) increased the classes
2) doubled the amount in each class
By 1986? IDK when things changed.
EDIT: Sorry, I missed your edit even though I quoted with the Edit. That was weird.
My freshman year at JC(1984) we had about 850 boys.I'd like to see the actual CCL school enrollment levels back then including the SCC.
Are you sure? That seems too high.My freshman year at JC(1984) we had about 850 boys.
A few years 5-4 or 4-5 teams won their conference & got in. One year 4-5 Kenwood skunked St. Rita in round 1If we are talking about the same era (late 70's early 80's) 6-3 would no even get you close to the playoffs, unless you were conference winners.

Joliet Catholic lost to Marian Catholic & beat Joliet Central. Joliet Central beat Marian Catholic. They voted in Joliet Catholic the Illini 8 Head Coaches voted & left Marian Catholic out. Elgin beat Marian Catholic that year too so 7-2. A beat up Steelmen team lost to a 5-3-1 Lake Park team in round 1. This was in 1976. Marian Catholic legendary coach Mattio was very upset. He said the Joliet area schools stuck together & voted in Central & Catholic & left him out. He wondered why they did so seeing is how he called off the dogs on the other teams & Joliet Catholic rolled up the score. He in particular was talking about Bolingbrook who the Toppers hung 64 onAs a matter of fact, JCA/JCHS finished in a 3 way tie for conference champs in either 1976 or 1977:
- JC 8-1, Marian Catholic 8-1, Joliet Central 8-1
- JC beat Marian Catholic, MC beat J Central, and J Central beat JC
- the conference could only send 2 teams, period
- there wasn't enough tie breaker criteria to get 2
- it went to a 3-way coin flip, odd man out
- the champs that year, almost didn't get into the playoffs with an 8-1 record AND Co-Champs of the conference.
- I can't remember, but I think Marian Catholic got the 2nd spot
EDIT: If you need to know the year I can go check my 7-up bottle, or yearbook. If I can find them.
I remember a good 6-3 Topper team barely missed the playoffs & were invited to the Prep Bowl where they won 3 more games including Marian Catholic again & lost to Julian in the Prep Bowl. It was a - year thing to invite Marian & Joliet Catholic & JC was going to be invited in 80 but they had changed the rules backAre you sure? That seems too high.
1977 - 1980 I'm pretty sure JC was steady about 630-640 boys. My class was 158 boys (80/81). In 1990 they merged JCHS & St Francis because enrollment had dropped too far to keep both schools open.
At least that's what I remembered. My class I'm sure (Maybe!)was only 156-158 with a couple comings and goings.
EDIT: I also remember a number of about 720 total boys. IDK
