Bourne looked at Cignetti in 2016 but hired Mike Houston, who ended up winning the FCS national championship that season. Cignetti then turned around Elon — taking a team that had gone 2-7 the year before his arrival and reaching the conference championship game (against JMU). “I said to myself then, if we ever have an opening, and he’s available, he’s a person we’re going to want to talk to,” Bourne said. And, in 2018 when Houston left for East Carolina, that’s what he did. He hired Cignetti.

“Very impressive guy,” Bourne said. “No nonsense. Gets it done, and he’s not in your office every five minutes asking for something.”

Look at their ability to scout, look at the amount of film that Curt watches and how prepared he was. Same thing with Bob,” Bourne said. “They both knew their staffs exceptionally well. They knew their strengths and weaknesses personally, and they hired around that. Then, they trusted their staff to get the job done. I felt like they were wonderful CEOs of football. They really knew the game. They knew the student-athletes. But beyond that, as head coaches, they knew how to organize and run a program.”

It was important, too, that these coaches knew how to develop players. JMU wouldn’t always be able to get the best recruits, especially once it moved up to FBS and would play rosters with far greater talent than the Dukes had on paper.

“They needed to be coached up to be competitive at the national level,” Bourne said. “So, we looked for a strong background in teaching, someone who related really well to the student-athletes, somebody that shared the university’s mission — a mission of a high degree of integrity. We wanted to find bright, talented coaches who could relate well on a public level and a student-athlete level. … I watched how they treated their coaching staff.

“I’m not sure that — for lack of a better term — a tyrant attitude was going to work well for us. We were looking for somebody that really had a has a good emotional skill set in addition to that deep, rich background in football.”

ADs at underachieving programs are going to blow up this guy's phone if Chesney gets UCLA into the playoffs, if they aren't already. And a lot of underachieving coaches are going to get fired.

This here is why Greg has never been a truly successful head coach.

Large majority were for Smart and Cignetti..... Chesney, Eck, Fritz were others mentioned by the 34 coaches/GMs Feldman polled.

From the article:

“Cignetti has my vote,” said a head coach in the American. "I have a special place in my heart for guys that take bad jobs and make them good. Anyone can win at certain places. What he has done is incredible.”

New Mexico’s Jason Eck, 49, received two first-place votes. Eck is 39-18 in four-plus seasons as a head coach. Last year, in his debut with the Lobos, the program won nine games after suffering through eight consecutive losing seasons. New Mexico went to UCLA as a 15.5-point underdog and smashed the Bruins 35-10. The Lobos’ lone loss this season was at Oklahoma as a 21.5-point underdog. Oklahoma won 14-6.

At his previous stop, Idaho, which had five straight losing seasons before his arrival, Eck led the Vandals into the FCS playoffs in his first year. By his third season, they went 10-4 and gave No. 3 Oregon, a 49.5-point favorite, all the Ducks could handle in their opener.

“It’s hard to pick against Cignetti right now, but I am going to go against the grain. Give me Jason Eck,” said a Big 12 GM. "In most of the 'big games' in his career, he hasn’t been close to having the same level of players, and he has found a way to make the game competitive. I don't think he needs close to the same players, but even in the same stratosphere, I'd like his chances to give his team a fair fight.”

Napier didn't have a good run at UF and it was just strange at times too. JMU seems to be set up for plenty of coaches to succeed but it doesn't mean they all do well when they step up. Cignetti and Chesney won a harder to win places before they got to JMU. I don't know if ULL would count as that (Hudspeth seem to do okay there before Napier but looks like Napier took it up a notch) in addition to the poor showing at UF.

Maybe he's learned but it would be a quick turnaround if he did get a shot again at the P4.

I think we got lucky PSU hired Matt Campbell. He seemed to have a good track record and would probably be on our list if still at ISU. Last week he used a Schinoesque time out when down late and with the ball. This week in the 4th Q he had 2nd and short at the 50 or so down 3 with about 8 min left and threw both times for incompletes, then later 2nd and short and 3 incompletes, seems to not understand 4 down situations. Franklin wasn't a top tier coach but PSU must have buyer's remorse.

Who we might think Zinn will go after might not be who Keli is looking at
Keli might not even be thinking of HC experience being a necessary qualification , but at someone she knows and feels capable of moving up to to the position
Blake Baker LSU's current DC might fit that description

Just wait for the revisionist history on Chesney. Awful facilities, no stadium, similar NIL and he already has more ranked wins than the last 10 years of Schiano. Soon we will hear it’s only because of NIL from a certain crowd
the biggest NIL guy and Greg blower hasn't been seen since Umass

I’ll just throw this in here.

The beginning of end for the whole staff because no amount of sacrificial lambs will save Locksley at the end of this season
The Turtles will have to pay him around $9mil , but with his losing record the last two seasons ( both 4-8) and this season not looking like a winner, Maryland will pay the price.
Jamey Chadwell, Liberty's HC might be the one Maryland goes after

I like Dickert too but don’t really mention him for us because I figure he might be looking for a more mid level or higher P4 job after WF.

He’s done solid to good jobs at hard to win places. He really should have won 10 games last year if not for the officials at the end of the GT game. A no call on an obvious offsides at the end by game was taken as a free play by the qb Ashford went incomplete but should’ve given them a first down to salt off the clock for a win. Instead GT came back and won.

He’s also shown the ability to find and/or replace assistant coaches, a trait I mentioned above that is important for the HC (see Lanning and Elko this year or Lupoi and Ash).

He found 3 productive OC/qb combos and at WSU/WF no less. At WSU Eric Morris/Cam Ward, Ben Arbuckle/John Mateer (although that combo isn't doing great under Venables at OU). At WF Rob Ezell/Robby Ashford, Gio Lopez. So he's a defensive coach but he's done a nice job identifying good OCs and QBs.

Also just to point out, at very hard to win WF their last 3 coaches (Grobe, Clawson, Dickert) were able to have solid seasons at times and win double digit games in a year (I'll count the 10 DIckert should have had last year lol but he might get double this year anyway). This is just to say there are multiple coaches out there that can do solid jobs at places (even hard to win ones) cause in the past the mantra only one person can win here has come up. It's nonsense, just go out and try and keep trying if you fail.

Clawson was 4-8 his last two years at WF and listening to pods of CFB media a big reason he left was because he thought WF couldn't survive in this world of NIL/portal. Lo and behold DIckert comes in and instantly is able to win 9 (should've been 10) and is not just surviving but even thriving currently in this NIL/portal world with one of the lower budgets out there by reports. Point being don't lose hope, find the right people and with some diligence and luck and who knows what's possible.

The current HC over at JMU is Billy Napier...he is interesting as he didnt do well at Florida at all but has been successful everywhere else. I have no clue what happened at Florida but is he a guy worth considering? The worst thing I see about him was that he refused to give up the control of running the offense. But he has now even admitted that himself and has given up that control at JMU. They do say he is a top recruiter though. He is only making $1m per year- is this a guy worth considering?

I’ve seen a few of these kind of things with Eck. It’s good that he doesn’t take himself too seriously and also tries to help promote/market in whatever way he can.

But according to people in here. None of this means anything because he hasn’t done it at a P4 level. Not saying he will have the same results. But records looks similar to someone presently coaching at Indiana

Coaching StopCignetti's RecordPrior Coach / Previous Tenure Context
Indiana
(2024–Present)
33–2 (.943)Tom Allen (33–49 overall): Fired after a 3–9 finish in 2023. The program was mired in a 9–26 stretch over its previous three seasons.
James Madison
(2019–2023)
52–9 (.853)Mike Houston (37–6 overall): Left a highly successful FCS powerhouse, but Cignetti seamlessly sustained that dominance and successfully spearheaded JMU’s transition to the FBS level.
Elon
(2017–2018)
14–9 (.609)Rich Skrosky (7–27 overall): Left after three losing seasons. Cignetti famously engineered a six-win single-season turnaround, taking Elon from 2–9 to 8–4 in year one.
IUP (Div. II)
(2011–2016)
53–17 (.757)Lou Tepper (36–18 overall): Dismissed after a stagnant 11–11 record over his final two seasons. Cignetti immediately restored the program to regional prominence.

You never know for sure but that's an attractive thing to see. It's actually worse than those records. I've mentioned this before but iirc Idaho had 2 winning seasons in the previous 22 before Eck got there and NM had 2 winning season in the previous 18 before Eck got there.

Can’t beat track records of success. Can’t discount where it was achieved.

Now that’s the kinda thinking outside of the box that shouldn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. Fun fact: He has never coached in college.
The Dan Soder residency at the RAC will be the stuff of legend.
Maybe Greg can stay on as defensive co-coordinator?
The Soder addition would be the most appealing part for me!

This is the kind of attitude you like to hear, especially for places like us. Same as what the AD said who hired CC at JMU...."wasn't in my office all the time asking for something."

From what we see on the landscape, revenue share/NIL/portal if anything is helping close gaps not increase them. Coaches in general can be notorious whiners. Whomever you are you have what you have and you know it going in so figure out how to get it done.

Jake DIckert

"The new revenue share has given all coaches excuses. And if it doesn’t work, (you hear), ‘It’s not me. It’s not something I did. It’s not my —’ I just don’t believe them. I don’t believe in that. We know what we have. We’ve got to leverage every cent and resource that we possibly can, and there’s going to be a tremendous amount of sacrifice by everybody. Period."

I don't wany anyone who blows away RU's administration (AD/President/BOG) in the interview process. I want someone who has a track record of taking a poor or mediocre program to new heights.
