Marco is definitely running for President in 2028. He would be an awful President.

Therefore I was happy to see Fareed take Marco to task today in the first 7 minutes of this video.

Zakaria loses me right away when he acts (in so many words) like it's a good thing for the USA & Western Europe to feel embarrassed about their history and culture and strengthen itself with immigrants who don't share their values.

Are you not embarrassed of the history of the U.S.?

Does he lose you on both those points? Are you saying we shouldn't acknowledge our failings and mistakes or are you saying we shouldn't allow out-of-culture immigrants? Or both?

Fareed compliments western culture on being able to self-correct. Are you saying we shouldn't self-correct?

I'm saying history is what it is around the world. Some of it's good and some of it isn't. The USA is no different than any other nation. Colonization and slavery occurred almost everywhere. I see no value in beating ourselves up about it. But by all means you're welcome to give up the "stolen" land you live on. I hope it makes you fell better about yourself.

Wrt out of culture immigrants.... I believe unity is our strength, not our diversity. The country does best when people have shared values. Does you football team ore company do better because they have a balanced number of Africans, Asians, and Latinos? Or does it do better when it has the most like minded talented people working towards a common goal. I'm all for merit based LEGAL immigration where one of the requirements is if you come here you are loyal to our country while respecting our laws and culture. Don't come here with a chip on your shoulder and expect us to alter our ways to accomodate you.

The real answer is that we evolved to feel shame because it encourages you not to do antisocial things again. Refusing to feel shame is unnatural and counterproductive.

Further, maturity is recognizing multiple things can be true at once; you can both lament the dark past of your nation, while still appreciating the great and beautiful things about it as well.

Holding both at the same time is pretty basic emotional maturity.

As Senator Hayakawa said, we shouldn't give up the Panama Canal . . . we stole it fair and square.

A lot of false dichotomies in your comment. I'm too lazy to address them. Suffice it to say I disagree with most of the positions you are taking.
