A different take on Roco

What i see is an average qb. Not terrible, but not good enough to lift a team with no running game to a win against a decent defense. With no run game, he had to throw 45 times yesterday, and made a few mistakes. Would have been nice if the defense could have stepped up after the turnovers instead of immediately giving up long runs. The run defense and no pass rush are a bigger problem than Roco. As for Manske, we have no idea how he is practicing or if he is even healthy. I'd like to see him get a couple of series against Purdue, but i would still start Roco unless Manske is great in practice the next two weeks.

It seems the HC will live and die with Roco.

Likely because he doesn't believe he has another viable option.
The OP is correct. Rocco is average. He doesn't have the talent around him (especially and OL) to play his best. He still has to make better decisions but he's clearly trying too hard right now and it's killing us.

I really thought that we were getting a Trace McSorely level talent who would run when needed. Both of his interceptions he could have run for 5-6 yards and put us in position for another down. One of the beat writers posted a stat that we do not have a run from a RB in our Big 10 games for more than 10 yards. That is now over 4 games....not 1 run over 10 yards............ that is almost hard to do. I believe that we averaged about our typical 2 yards a carry yesterday. We should have a lot of 2nd 8 calls ready, because we are living in 2nd and 8 or 9 yards on every series. I saw some fight yesterday but the fight was mostly coming from our DBs which are probably the best unit on the field.

The answer that Campbell gave yesterday about not even considering a change in QB is interesting......it either shows belief in what he has in Rocco, or it shows blind loyalty........

Largely agree--but Hansen was consistently getting 3-5 yards on first down runs yesterday which should have opened up the playbook. I think the worst series of the games yesterday was we picked up 7 yards on a first down (not sure if it was Peoples or Hansen) but then we had two incompletions followed by a punt. There's lot of problems but the play calling certainly isn't helping

The post was sarcasm.....Rocco stated in his post game comments that sometimes he just gets unlucky.............

And he is right. The ball could have been tipped by the Wolverine into the TEs hands and PSU scores, but due to lack of luck that did not happen.

The stat on no 10+ yard runs is amazing. Hansen plays because he can block, which they desperately need, and he can gain 2 or 3 yards when there is no hole. But he has no explosive ability. The other backs haven't shown much of anything. Its odd that the oline is decent in pass protection, but the running game is so bad. Are they just bad run blockers or is it more on the rb's? On an unrelated note, where is Brahmer?? They were playing a quick, short passing game but they can't get him the ball more than a couple times a game? Is he being triple teamed? They can't find him in the red zone?

Becht is terrible. He obviously has not been able to come back from injury, it happens.

The excuse making from the Becht apologists doesn’t cut it any more. Said to my wife right before the first offensive play of the second half let’s hope we don’t have a repeat where Becht plays well the first half and falls apart in the second half. What happens get flushed out of the pocket and forces a pass into double coverage on FIRST DOWN rather than throw the ball away. He then throws a lazy pass across the field when no one is open for the second pick. The cherry on top was the fumble when he had time to throw the ball away. Becht COULD be an average QB despite his physical limitations but not when the “Most Experienced QB in College Football” repeatedly keeps making atrocious decisions. After 5 years, this isn’t going to change.

If he had been a B1G level talent he would have been recruited by a B1G program to begin with.
That people continue to seem surprised continues to baffle me.

So Mendoza didn't have Big Ten talent?
You want a list of guys or do you understand how dumb that statement is?
Josh Allen clearly sucks at football since only Wyoming wanted him

It’s hard to accept that this is a really bad team, and the program is in a really bad place. It’s easier to blame someone and think that if you replace them, all of the problems go away.

Who the hell is saying benching Becht makes all the problems on this bad team go away? This is a rebuilding year and it’s time to move on and see if Manske can play in a lost season.

More excuses. More likely we are simply finding out that Becht can’t play in the Big Boys league.
You pretending he didn't play Big Ten teams at Iowa State--you're wrong. We've seen him play and beat Iowa
It's not an excuse--he's not good enough right now and likely won't be based on my above comment. Sadly, he's still our best option.

Gimme a break. Beyond laughable. I guess Cignetti doesn’t understand the NIL era either. First thing he said to Marsh when he transferred from Michigan State and showed up with gold cleats was “what’s with the bleeping cleats”?

Yeah he played one mid tier Big Ten team once a year. BFD. Since Manske has yet to play any meaningful snaps you have no idea whether he is better than Becht.

I think you are being kind and considerate. That’s commendable. However, Becht has proven to be a terrible QB this season. Just terrible. He looked shaky even in the Temple game where he missed wide open receivers.

Becht is playing scared. He hears footsteps when he air mails those panic throws. Also, you can see his fear when he consistently and inexplicably dives way too soon to the ground just 1-2 yards short of a first down. That is fear. Becht’s protection was very good and he had time in the pocket yesterday.

I really believe Becht is just overmatched at the B1G level. There is nothing to gain with the softest part of an easy schedule coming up. It’s time to start thinking about the portal, recruiting, and next season. This season is a certified disaster.

If Manske was demonstrating in practice he was better there's no doubt he'd have gone to him after the second pick. The backup QB is always the favorite player for a reason--been that way here forever.

He absolutely plays scared. He must have lost his team yesterday after sliding before the first down with little chance of taking a hit there.

The OL isn't good
RB's aren't good all be it too loyal to Carson
WR's out side of Howard and Sowell not good
Breamer isn't as good as advertised
DL is awful
LB outside of Rojas dreadful
Play calling Head scratcher
See what you have with younger kids give Back up QB a shot
Bench WR #4
If you stay with Becht play like NE Pats vs Steelers spread the field and run slants and crosses

going into the season we were fooled into thinking the Gap between ISU and Big Ten was closer.

loyalty is great but this is getting silly

Not being able to convert a first down with a second and two yards (several times) is an unexpected issue for a veteran 'winning' QB with several WRs, TEs, and a RB who he has experience with, regardless of the OL. I wonder if he is still more than a little sensitive about reinjuring himself (from last year's injury)...he seems to consistently pull up a yard or two short on his runs.

In addition, paying an average player huge, life-changing $$$ is only make them worse imo because they become self-satisfied, overconfident and complacent. How many times have we seen Becht take losses when scrambling outside the pocket rather than just getting rid of the ball? Yesterday he fumbled the ball inside our own 10 yard line while scrambling way outside the pocket and should have long-since thrown the ball away! The fumble and subsequent game-clinching scUM TD were utterly unnecessary and avoidable. Becht has gotten worse, not better, since coming to PSU and a big part of that was paying an average QB huge top-$$$ maket-rate money making him believe he was as good as that money suggested and violated the old adage that "a man has got to know his limitations" if he is going to reach his maximum potential. Becht doesn't play "within his limitations", he simply ignores them and plays as if he doesn't have them or needs to recognize them to make continual improvement.

BTW, who is it that brought Becht here for huge money pushing Grunk out the door???

The lack of accountability is a huge issue--there's no defending that 15 second clip he had regarding him being "unlucky"
The sad thing is Burkle was open a little bit, throw it to him down and away on the 30 yard line but he throws the ball right to the Michigan defender. That's not Luck that is Suck.
