Billy Puckett & MAIS quarterbacks question……

I was having this discussion with someone earlier. What MAIS quarterbacks have started a game for any SEC team? Stewart Patridge was the only one I could recall going back 30 years or so. We could think of a number of backups but don’t recall them starting a game….especially against another SEC team. Surely I’m overlooking a couple. Any help?

Tony Shell played QB and graduated from Jackson Academy (graduated JA 1987....I believe)

**Jackson Prep has another good senior QB this year that should be getting some interest from schools soon

Burney Veazey played in a few games as Peyton Manning and Tee Martins backup but I don’t think he ever started one. He also has a fat national championship ring with Tennessee.

Who really cares what level of high school ball he played?

Fact is - he’s a true freshmen walk-on QB in the SEC. And we’re in the damn NIL and transfer portal era. Even if he’s the greatest walk-on QB in SEC history, what really is his ceiling?

It better be pretty damn high, otherwise Lebby is going to have a shite ton of explaining to do if he ever sees any meaningful playing time.

If he does end up being the greatest walk-on QB in SEC, I will be thrilled because that would mean that he is better than 2 time National Champion Stetson Bennett! We probably would have a great year if that happens.

Splitting hairs here but he is a redshirt freshman and is on scholarship now. Still not great

The real question is where are AJ Swann & Jaden Rashada?

Swann has been hurt some but could see some snaps tomorrow as well.

We went out in the portsl and signed a guy who started games at LSU Vandy and APP state. Not sure what you all wanted. We had a starter and not everyone wanted to come in knowing they won’t be the starter.

I suspected as much with Swann. This explains a lot. I agree he looked like the ideal #2 QB when we signed him. And Rashada looked like a really high upside guy for not much money worth taking a chance on. I’ll criticize Lebby recruiting in other areas. But not really here.

And Rashada just got a scholarship no NIL.

Been hurt some? Come on. First off - Swann hasn’t been listed on the availability report with an injury all season. Secondly, got hurt doing what? Fell off a 4-wheeler?

It’s week 7, and this is a dude that hasn’t had any practice reps or game reps to get hurt. Let alone the fact that the QB’s are all non-contact in practice. Whatever minor nick or bruise or sprain he had at any point before camp has had ample time to heal by now.

We went out in the portsl and signed a guy who started games at LSU Vandy and APP state.
And had pretty terrible stats at all those places. Hence why he’s on his 4th school in 4 years.

Not sure what you all wanted.
That’s easy. At least one back-up QB that isn’t an automatic surrender flag whenever we have to deal with an inevitable injury to our starter. Every other P4 program has one. It’s not too much to ask. Name another P4 institution that had a 5’10” 170 lb walk-on redshirt freshmen as it’s #2 QB entering week 1, and had no injuries at all that forced that situation.

We had a starter and not everyone wanted to come in knowing they won’t be the starter.

If we were offering the $1 million plus that Kromenhoek got last year (allegedly), we’d have no problem at all finding someone. Hell, even hanging onto Kromenhoek would have been fine. Are you finally suggesting that maybe we don’t have the money we need to compete?

A lot to unpack here

You literally are very close to taking the title of most ignorant poster from GOAT on 6pack
Pretty clear you have zero clue what you’re even talking about regarding the team or injuries. OL blue just stop posting drivel. Yes Swann had an injury in preseason.. belive it or not **** like that happens. Also, believe it nor not Puckett actually out played him in reps as well.
Your perception is flawed much like the rest of this fan base. The portal isn’t amazon where you pick what you want or who you want. You think that you look intelligent with your word vomit post but mostly it’s just stupid jargon you try to insult me or others. You b!tch about the coaches, the administrators, and all the while vehemently posting how much you don’t or won’t donate… yet quick to spend others money on….a backup QB.

Do some research before casting a wide net. This is the portal era not that easy to get a backup QB. Swann on paper was a decent get. OU back played at Mercer other SEC backups are true freshman or lower level transfers. You would think someone that post as much as you and had two usernames would have some what of an understanding how recruiting in the this era takes place.

Nearly everyone on this board bítched about having him on the roster and paying him but now it’s a good idea.

Y’all pick a lane.

There is years of evidence to support that the QB position is difficult to recruit to at Mississippi State.

with that said, having Taylor and Swann and Puckett on roster is a good job by Lebby.

It's typical State fanbase to make assumptions about Puckett and recruiting to support a narrative of those pitching a fit that Taylor may not play.

I think the best we can hope for is this looks like some of the Van Buren starts from 2024 where we lean a lot on short passes and the run game and look somewhat passable offensively.
That’s the only way the offense is going to be successful today. Do that and play defense

First of all, we’re not winning this game.

But, on the off chance that we decide we’re winning this game, we really need Bad Sam Leavitt to show up and throw us a couple of TD passes.
