Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is taking a stand for all Americans against the newest, most dangerous monopoly threatening the republic: spices.

On Tuesday, Warren posted a statement on social media voicing concern over a potential merger between McCormick & Company and Unilever, a deal that would place Hellmann’s mayonnaise, McCormick spices, Cholula hot sauce, and Frank’s RedHot under one corporate roof. Her concern is simple, and stereotypical: consolidate enough beloved condiments and seasonings under one company, and grocery prices could rise as the newfound monopoly charges whatever rates it wants to.

Or she could stfu and let the free market work. How is every single thing that pops up in need of liberal government intervention? It’s comical at this point. We need her and her team to regulate mayo and hot sauce. Oh please daddy, tell me what to do. 😂😂😂😂

What does the HHI analysis say? I honestly don’t know - just curious if this meets certain thresholds.

I suggest you do the grocery store analysis. Make sure to include the "world foods" isle for Kewpie mayo and siracha.

$hite, I have 5 bottles of hot sauce in the fridge now - Franks, Hot Ones, Cholula's, Siracha and a bottle of Taco Bell mild. Almost bought a 6th over the weekend.

First of all, hellmans sucks.

second, as to monopolies, honestly I am always more concerned about distribution monopolies than product monopolies. And in the food sector, lots of local competitors and low barriers to entry.

Didn't expect to see conservatives supporting monopolization but I guess that's on me.
Omg someone get congress in emergency session, there’s a damn company trying to monopolize mixing egg yolks and oil together. Omg someone please pass some laws and save us. I heard they might even mix salt, chili peppers and damn vinegar together too. This is legit defcon 5. Trump is trying to destroy the country. These maga nuts want us paying 5000$ for mayonnaise.

Do you girls hear yourselves?

There's low fat mayo. Mayo with olive oil. Mayo with avocado oil.... Did you ever watch any of those video's of a Cuban national shopping in America for the first time. They are overwhelmed with the selection.

Oh, I forgot. I also have a bottle of gochujang, gochujang + miso and chili crisp in the fridge to add to the 5 bottles of hot sauce.....

Europe grandest achievment the last 10 years is the bottle cap sticking to water bottles.

Yeah, there is a monopolization of hot sauce and mayo. Get the F out of here..... lmfao....
There are currently 13 bottles of hot sauce and 3 different types of mayo in my fridge. Dukes is still in a league of it's own though.

No, it's okay, I get that you don't actually have any conservative principles, it's not exactly anything new. The OG conservatives (RIP Taft and Eisenhower) were staunchly anti-trust and were pro-market instead of being pro-business, but you MAGAs are pretty simple and don't really espouse any conservative values.

For years we always reached for Hellman's just because that's what we always did. Dukes and Kewpie are our choices now.

Is this real or a satire article? Because after she celebrated the death knell of Spirit Airlines costing the careers of tens of thousands, adversely impacting travel options for the whole country, and in effect strengthening the market share of the legacy 3 airlines, I have a hard time giving a **** about one of hundreds of options at the grocery store.

I think you are confused. Perhaps we think fretting over mayo and hot sauce is silly. Can it be that?

if they do merge, how about we support some smaller local mom and pop type stores instead. Oh wait, the government needs their share and the mom and pop stores can’t survive. Looks like even high grocery prices for all!! Yay America.

Sure no harm in that; I've just seen the increased monopolization of industry in this country over the last 20+ years and it's a terrible thing. Mom and pop stores are going by the wayside and a handful of businesses end up owning 90+% of our options under the guise of "vertical integration." Dems and the GOP are both guilty of turning a blind eye to these mergers and I'd love to see another trust-busting era like we had during the start of the 20th century.

Thats fine. There are places where your concerns are valid. But the hot sauce and mayo and spice industry aint it.

See, I think it's important to combat it in any and every industry. Selective enforcement of laws isn't a good precedent to set!

There is nothing to enforce because there is no monopoly in the spice industry. You and Pocahontas are fighting the monster under the bed.

We need Bessent to step in and send her another letter explaining that she has a elementary understanding of almost all matters.

McCormick already has a 4x increased market share over the next highest competitor (between 18 and 30% in the US).
Unilever Foods is sitting at around 18% of the current market share in the US alone.

Idk, i'm not really keen on a a single conglomerate controlling ~35-50% of the market share. I feel like this is something that there should be common ground on, but since it's been brought up by the dems your default setting is to be against it/minimize it.

Perhaps we are numb from the constant whining about GIIIIIIIIANT COOOOOOORPORATIONS...... aka employers.

Meanwhile, you boy Mamdani plans to put hundreds of Mom and Pop shops out of business.

I live in SC, not NYC, and have no control over what a guy I never voted for is doing in a city I don't live in.

Re: the bolded - seeing conservatives go from pro-small business mom and pop entrepreneurs to pro-big corp who destroy the American dream has been a funny transition the last ~decade or so.

It's a figment of your imagination. A gross generalization. AOC does the same thing.
