Ralph Russo on a pod was saying he thought ESPN would get it all and they had the extra money in their pocket from the conf champ games being removed.

There was a report not long ago that two sides were far apart but I guess not.

People ask do they have room for it all but a bunch of games will end up being on weekdays so that helps.

Some schools will have to get to cancelling lower level games and scheduling that 10th P4 game quick.I think I read there were 11 schools that didn’t have a 10th P4 game for next year.

I was kind of even wondering in the future how much demand we might get as a perceived cupcake OOC. I’d stick with old big east rivals myself (WVU, Pitt, Cuse, BC etc…) but who knows what lies ahead in that area.

Well if they do that like they did with now Skydance (formerly Warner/Paramount) then no issues with finding room for the games.

Last year’s projected 24 team playoff. Give me this all day and as many on campus as possible.

View attachment 1485989
I think the first 2 rounds are suppose to be on campus…quarterfinals and beyond might be at the bowls.

How awesome is it that it would be realistically possible for any P4 team to not only make a playoff but also host a playoff game if you happen to have a good year.

And teams that have no chance to make the playoffs will schedule multiple FCS. The Grifter has Wagner and Rhode Island on speed dial.

The thing that made college football the best sport in the land was the absolute premium on every single game in the regular season. Lose one and you're probably done. There was nothing like it at all.

Bit by bit, they have mitigated that heightened sense of importance and tension, and this is the death knell. A travesty.

I’d be good with that. Two home playoff games would be perfect.

I’d argue the playoff system actually makes lesser games more important. Look at this weekend, you have several potential lose and go home games on an October weekend-
LSU/Mississippi State
Ole Miss/Missouri
Alabama/Tennessee
Houston/Ok State

And two other highly impactful if one of the teams loses and/or for seeding-

BYU//Notre Dame
Ohio St/Indiana

The way it works, that is correct, but they still get what, two, or even three games to lose and still have a chance? It sucks. I understand there's no going back to the past, especially given how much money is talking here, but there just is no substitute for the terror of being 9-0 and facing a tough opponent in November, knowing that it's all finished if you slip up. The heightened sense of urgency is long gone. If you lose two or three games, you have no business competing for a title anyway.

Your original premise is every game mattered in the old system. I don’t think that’s actually true. If it’s lose one and go home, that actually greatly diminishes the amount of games that matter on a given week. Sure, you’ll get some amazing late season meaningful games but all of the games I listed above now become meaningless.

Agree more games matter...for seeding (which means potential home playoff games now) and for just getting in (which matters a lot if you're a smaller status school). As a Rutgers fan I love it, because I can actually realistically dream of a CFP. How great would it have been if Vandy made it last year. A Pavia led Vandy would've been a dangerous team. Stories like that can happen now.

I went over this in the other 24 CFP thread. I think 8 teams out of the P4 and ND (68 teams) have never finished the season ranked since the CFP started ranking. I think 3 have never been ranked (Cal, RU, Maryland). So most teams have had hope at the end or somewhere late in the season (CFP rankings only come out late Oct/early Nov). Just getting ranked now just about guarantees you entry.

It's also another mechanism for more parity. NIL/portal have helped that and now maybe make it once or twice and you can be like "Hey come here, get some money and contribute to a team that can make the playoff. Help us go farther." It's another opportunity for a little upward mobility.

Many CFB media don't like it but I think they focus too much on the big guys and not on what it means to the little guys and their fans. I think too much of a microscopic view of the landscape rather than a panoramic one.

From the article:

Had a 24-team Playoff been in place since 2014, 80 different programs would have qualified at least once.

Illinois, Minnesota, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt would have earned one bid apiece with a 24-team CFP.

The 12-team CFP further adjusted the postseason when first-round games moved on campus, bringing consistent stakes back to those six bowls but back-burnering the rest of the bowl system.

But on-campus CFP games didn’t cheapen the sport; they augmented it. Tennessee fans traveled en masse to Ohio State for the first time. Indiana played at Notre Dame for the first time in 33 years. Those games featured far better atmospheres than what one would find at a neutral site. College football’s greatest assets are its fans and cathedrals.

A 24-team CFP is big enough to include every team of quality yet exclusive enough that only 17.5 percent of FBS participants would compete in it, which would remain by far the lowest percentage among major American sports. It adds more impactful games on campus and adds value to November football. It keeps conference structures intact and could prevent wandering eyes from gazing at a super-league setup fueled by private equity.

Most importantly, every Power 4 program would have hope on the field, which is priceless in this money-driven era. Let’s embrace that, not mock it.

From your lips to the CFB gods ears lol.

Schools like NW, Colorado, WVU, Pitt, GT, KSU, Miss St etc even more than once.

The surprising one that’s never made it and one of those 8 from the P4 I mentioned is Nebraska. They have been ranked but fell out of the rankings.

Under a proposed format, seeds 1-8 would earn a first-round bye and host a second-round game on campus. Seeds 9-24 would play first-round games on the campus of the higher seed. The chance to host a Playoff game is part of the incentive of regular-season success beyond just making the field.

Final schedule details still need to be hammered out, but the expectation is that conference championship games will be eliminated on the first weekend of December. ESPN will receive a rebate for the three conference championships that they won, which will be for about half of the money that the new games will cost.

That week will become an off week for CFP teams and the potential spot to play the Army-Navy game. First-round games would begin the second weekend of December on campuses, perhaps as early in the week as Thursday. Second-round games would be the following weekend, also expected to be on campus.

Quarterfinals would continue to be played around New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day at bowl sites, and the semifinals and final would also remain in their scheduled spots at bowl and neutral sites.

We’ve been over this, you don’t watch much college football so this won’t affect you. You can rest up and turn on the later rounds
Of course I won’t watch the garbage, but it’s still fun to troll about it.

And FYI, bought more PURR on the recent dip.

I’ve said this before but even at 24 CFB has a lower percentage of teams making the postseason than the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and that’s whether you take it as 138 in the FBS or 68 power schools.

First two rounds look meaningless. Lots of garbage teams in that bracket.
It’s more meaningful than a bowl game between those same teams.

And I wouldn’t discount some of those teams in a given year as being dangerous troublemakers. They may not win it all but can be capable of upsets or creating good games. Pavia led Vandy was very capable. 8-4 Iowa pushed national champ IU to the limit losing 20-15, lost to Oregon 18-16. GT would’ve made it last year and the last 3 years they lost to UGA by just a score so you never know what could happen with some of these 8-4/9-3 teams in a given year.

They don’t need to win it all but some of them can be competitive and pull off upsets here and there. That’s plenty fine.

Can you go down to 24 teams that can win it all? No but you did have #8 OSU win it all and #10 Miami come very close to winning it all. The pool of national championship capable teams is larger than the past.

If the top 24 teams will get in now there's no need for these nationwide superconferences. Go back to regional.
