How often do you think we'll see a lineup with only one of those four on the floor?

Do Smith and Jones have good enough handles to operate effectively, esp against high pressure defenses? I love their size.

What do we know of Wooten, is he expected he get very limited minutes? And I don't think we should count Diego out. Is his rep as a defender and shooter? Can he handle the ball?

Could we run Tariq, Smith, Jones, Syndor, Gurdak?

Yeah, brutal. Why I’m wondering how much help Smith and Jones would be. Plus there’s Gurdak’s apparent game IQ and the fact that he can catch and dribble makes.

Need Lino in the game for most minutes handling the ball. If he subs out and Francis is on with Jones and Smith , they should be able to handle , bring the ball upcourt and get us into our sets . However , not for long periods as I also think Lino can steal you some baskets with his speed alone.

Smith is a forward. Jones is a guard

I believe Jones will be right up there in minutes with Francis and Mark

Powers needs to earn minutes and Davis you can book for 7-10 min max of 100% solid but not special contributions

If Jones doesn’t emerge as a clear top 3 guard then we are in trouble.

I agree with the statement that Jones needs to emerge as a top 3 guard along with Francis and Lino. JMike shouldn’t be more than a 10-15 minute per night 4th guard.

I suspect that either Lino or JMike will be on the court at all times...Francis will play 30 mpg and Powers will be in competition for a few of the 10 minutes remaining at the 2.

Tariq, Smith, Jones, Syndor, Gurdak. That's what I want to see. You can get a little bit better from player improvement. You can get a lot better from improved players. I wasn't so sure about Smitty, but I based on one scrimmage, I'm leaning his way.

Both Jones and Smith are wings, you really can’t differentiate them into separate boxes. I could easily see Smith, Buchanan and Sydnor all in the court together. Mark and Francis are going to be playing around 30 mpg, I have not seen enough of Jones to say he should be getting anywhere close to those minutes.

To your point both are listed as guards

Your post reminded me of the SHU game last year with Francis trying to get the ball over half court.

I would think that either Mark or JMike is going to have to be on the floor
That certainly wasn’t Tariq’s finest moment, but there were BigTen games where Francis was fine on the floor running the point without JMike or Mark.

I think it depends. Is the opposing team applying ball pressure? RU doesn’t have guards that can handle ball pressure beyond Lino and JMike, considering Francis struggled with heavy ball pressure. Smith and Jones seem like players that may be able to handle that role but we don’t really know. Buchanan also seems capable to handle the ball vs another wing. The reality is, if teams are going to apply a lot of ball pressure with guards, JMike or Lino will have to be in the game.

Smith played a good amount of point forward last year. He can handle the ball. I believe Jones played PG for Coastal but that’s not the BIG. Either way - these guys are MUCH better ball handlers than the guys on the floor with Tariq in that SHU disaster.

The line up with those turnovers included Zrno, Grant, Ogbole and Denis - none of them can handle the ball at all.

Yup, this is the five I said in the duplicate thread that OP must've deleted and wasn't going to retype. This would be our most well rounded line up. Lino off the bench as your chaos guard, he is not a half court run the offense guy yet, he'll get there though.
I can also live with DB in place of Smith and Smith as offense off the bench.

I’ll give it one more game to be sure, but at least based on the scrimmage he looks to.be the best defensive option we’ve got for either the 2 or the 3 and it wasn’t even close. It was telling he was out there down the stretch despite being quiet on offense. He was in foul trouble otherwise I bet he plays more than 21 minutes

He and Buchanan are both so small to be the 4 smith is a guard/wing. Buchanon is undersized down the 4 but it’s probably his best position. Sydnor is our 4
Yes, Syndor is our 4. Smith is a wing, wouldn't call him a guard. Slow laterally. Has a Donyell Marshall body.

I see Buchanan getting 10 min at the 3 and 10 min at the 4. The less he plays, probably the better we’ll be because it means other new guys are better than him. Hes not a 2, can’t defend smaller guards or shoot. Can’t dribble with his left. Not a 2.

Smith Jr 29.8 usage rate and Jones 20.1, Smith seems to be more comfortable handling the ball than Jones Both TO% are in line with Francis and Davis 10-11%, both Mark and Powers 15-16% as freshman, will improve this yr. Plenty of options for handling.

Rutgers TO% was ranked 68th/365, was not the problem in most games and all are back with a few more options. Rebounding was a gaping hole weakness and we improved at all three positions, guards, forwards and center.

Those 4 players chemistry were gelling at the end of last year. Adding more shooters on the team, I think Assists/TO will improve as there are more shooters, just needs to build chemistry and consistency.

Career 3pt shooting
Francis 177-518 34.2%(52-141 35.1% last yr)
Smith Jr 81-219 38.6%
Jones 131-376 34.8%
Davis 51-159 32.1%(29-81 35.8% last yr)
Sydnor 47-137 34.3%
Buchanan Jr 28-103 27.2%(12-33 35.3% last yr)
Mark 10-43 23.3%(missed 1st 17, 10-26 38.5% after)
Powers 28-86 32.6%

Shooting isn't as bleak as it seems after the first exhibition game.

He can defend bigger 2's if need be though. I think you minute breakdown is probably about right though. My point wasn't DB is a guard, its that Smith isn't either. Both more wing forwards to me.

But a lot of those stats are not against high major defense so let’s see if we can get above 30% as a team . I’d like to see 33% at least

They are but Smith is a better ball handler and it’s not close. Buchanan can’t take more than one dribble left in coverage.

Smith is a better ball handler BUT its mostly used to get his own offense, not to run the team. Per 40 Darren has put up twice the assists. Different players, not guards, still my only point.

Buchanan doesn’t (can’t really) use his handle to help the PG keep the ball out of harms way or run the offense. He has a strong right, and yes, there are times he uses it in the half court sets to kick out for shots, etc. My point was more about that I don’t ever want him being the second best ball handler on the court - if he is that’s trouble. if Tariq is sliding to the 1 for some minutes - it should be Jones or Smith out there assisting him . And if Tariq is out, I also don’t think I want him at the 2 with Lino or J Mike - because I can’t think of who would be at the 3 in that case (with him at the 2). Maybe on defense if he was even in the game with Kaden. But not offense.
