I guess Spurrier gave Gamecock fans a shoutout in his on-field speech, so at least he didn't play along.

I can’t think of a better time to recognize Spurrier’s legacy than before a game between two of his formerly coached SEC teams. 🤷 We should make a Rivalry Game where whoever wins gets to take Steve Spurrier home for the year, and he stays in either Columbia or Gainesville until the next game.
Funny, but I like it.

I read that it's the hip. He already got one and it waiting for the other. He was already limping when he was here.
Yea...he's been limping for years, but not like that. Hip replacements have become routine, but at his age it's likely more complicated.
Hard to watch. 😬

I saw a tiny blip of him on the field, and it looked like his left hand was all swollen too. Yeah, tough to see him getting old. Hopefully he gets that hip situated soon.

Steve Spurrier gave us the greatest years in Gamecock football history, no need to be rude or insulting.
Yes he did, but he did quit in the middle of the season, left the program in disarray, caused us to lose to the Citadel and lead to the disorganized process of hiring Chump then Beamer. You could say that we have still not recovered from this event, it set us back a decade. This is what I remember more than 3 good seasons out of a hundred bad ones.

I view Spurrier the way a man would view a wife who gave him a few great years of marriage and then cheated on him and walked out on the man and the kids. I overlook the good years and remember the betrayal.

I also remember that within a year of quitting on us, Spurrier took a job at UF as some sort of football ambassador. He wasn't ready to retire from football, he was sick of being at Carolina.

I really believe he did that because he thought it was best for the program, also it gave us a chance to see if an interim coach could be successful. I have nothing but admiration for legendary coaches Lou Holtz and Spurrier - neither had to come here and many thought they were crazy for doing so. They both attained heights for our program that have rarely been duplicated and in some instances - SEC East champ - won`t be. Both had significant bowl wins and gave credibility to our program. Many have probably forgotten we were 1-21 after Lou`s first year, counting Brad Scott`s last year.

I think it was both; this, which I believe was sincere, AND he was sick of being at Carolina.

I’m 72; been playing in one band or another since I was 17. I’m good at what I do and it’s relatively easy for me, but it does take some effort and attention that I just frankly do not feel like putting out any more. The ends no longer justify the means, and I’ve tried to quit several times and let myself get sucked back in; I’m sure spurrier felt the same. He did what he set out to do, and then just maintaining gets old and burdensome. In his defense, he did try to turn in his notice.

A head coach walking out on a team mid season is never good for a program. I think it is embarrassing for the program when a legendary coach gets so fed up with the program that he throws up his hands and quits mid season.

FYI, winning your division doesn't make you a "champion" of anything. Winning your division gives you the chance to play for a championship.

Yeah, noticed the same thing (as if you could miss it) and wondering what the situation is. Looked bad.

If nothing else, it looks like it would seriously hamper his golf game, and as much as he loves that, you'd think he'd be doing something to rectify the situation.

actually I heard Ray Tanner shares some of the responsibility for it, Spurrier was ready to retire after beating Miami in the bowl game, Tanner talked him into staying one more year and then had no accession plan in place. Ray Tanner is the one who set most of the men's sports back for many years!

The man is 81 Years Old. We all age differently and at some point things get beyond fixing.. He's still here and that's the main thing to be thankful for.

Of course everything is Ray Tanner's fault. When Donati leaves, whenever that may be and for whatever reason, everything bad will become Donati's fault. When Muschamp went 9-4 in year 2, he was a great hire and things were going to only get better.

I do not think Chump was ever a good hire. He was a good DC but an already failed HBC. If you cannot win at UF you probably suck.

Yeah, if Muschamp stays, Bobo likely stays and Gunner comes to Columbia. Muschamp probably has some good seasons and everyone is talking about what a great hire Tanner made.

Bobo and Gunner are lighting it up in Athens.

Steve Spurrier is like most Dads, wanted to help his offspring be successful in life. In that regard, he made several HUGE MISTAKES in promoting SOS JR to Recruiting Coordinator ( which was a disaster) and allowing him to make personnel decisions on the coaching staff. Huge mistake in promoting Ward (Marble Mouth) to DC, then letting Ward hire incompetents like Deke Adams. Ended up causing SOS to walk away from college coaching mid season. Not the way a HOF coach should have gone out. Nepotism can, and often does, come back to bite you in the butt. It did so to Steven Orr Spurrier…

Didn't Holtz make his son OC and Asst HC? Maybe the SC job is appealing to retread coaches because they think they can put their sons in top positions?

Does Saban or Meyer have a son they want to give a coordinator job to?

He did, but Skip was actually a serviceable coach.

Spurrier had his faults, but in the total realm of things, he was the best coach and possibly going to be the best coach we have had here. I’m still waiting on a coach that can go 11-2 three years in a row, win three consecutive bowl games against the B1G, beat the big three in the SEC with some success and beat Clemson 5 years in a row. When that happens again , I’ll be glad to rise up from my grave.

Ba doink.

And even then, even THEN, there were message board brain donors calling for Spurrier’s head.

Lou Holtz. The counter to ‘spurrier showed it COULD be done’ is Holtz showing ‘ah well., another one bites the dust.’

The beams is not getting blown out; he is dang close. DANG close, and getting closer. The brain donors decry ‘learning on the job’; I see that as a good thing in our situation. Holtz was NOT ‘learning on the job’ and left with tail tucked, same as everyone else.

We’re not Ohio state. Never have been. Unless we get a Cuban, we never will be.

And I’m cool with that. It’s entertainment.

As somebody that was there, I thought it came off well, both fan bases applauded at the right times, and showed respect, his wife a South Carolina grad was out there to, and he spoke about Mrs. Jerri, the whole stadium was quiet, while he talked, I dont think another SEC fan based would of been so quiet and respectful., could be Spurrier wanted it at this game for his 2 SEC schools for that reason.

As someone that was there, I will add they were doing on field recognitions every commerical break including big boosters and the dairy farmers, the 96 team and the 66 team, womens soccer goalie kicked a FG, it was non stop, :)

The SEC has changed a lot since Spurrier had his run. Auburn and UF were juggernauts then, they are solidly mediocre now. Tennessee was way down then and they are much better now. UGA was good, but they were "Richt good", meaning they were very inconsistent and lost games they should have won. Now, UGA is elite. UK was a doormat, that looks to have changed. Vandy was whatever is below a doormat and now, they are at least competitive. Bama was above average when Spurrier was here, but nothing like they are now. Ole Miss is much better than they were then and LSU has always been tough.

Clemson is sort of back to where they were when Spurrier was here. They are "ACC good".

I don't think there is any other SEC fan base that has any love at all for Spurrier. He was always a pretty good loser, he admitted when his teams were outplayed or he was outcoached. His problem was, he was a terrible winner. He loved to take shots at the other team after he won and that really made opposing fans hate him.

UF knew that SC was the only other SEC fan base who had any admiration or affection for Spurrier. If they had tried "Steve Spurrier Day" with any other team, the booing would have been incessant while he talked.

I think your 100% right, it was not meant to embarrass South Carolina but to avoid the scenerio you laid out and Coach may have suggested it as well as the game he wanted it done at.

I enjoyed his speech and really enjoyed the game! :)

My answer is this, Skip Holtz was well liked and respected by our players when he was here. I can tell you without much refrain, that SOS JR. , was just the opposite while here. Not just that, but many SC HS coaches loathed him as well. You can take it FWIW.
