It's an exhibition. I know we are excited for a break from FB, but the team will be a lot different with Tariq and Syndor. Davis will have less minutes with Francis.
Davis will still get minutes and be a liability when he does. I don’t see symdor or affecting Davis’ minutes.

Gurdak, Smith Jr and Lino Mark are going to be players this year. Competed quite well without Tariq Francis.

It’s only exhibition. But don’t sleep on Jones D. He looked quick and agile. Athletic. And Smith is materially better on D than his bottom 5% advanced metrics suggest. Pleasantly surprised with the D overall outside of the 3 point close outs which are always a problem for us even on some of our better teams. Rebounding looked improved.

To compete like this without Tariq or a guy in Sydnor who is expected to compete for starter minutes a good first look. Were drastically improved at the 5. Ware looks playable and we haven’t even seen Buca yet.

Not a good first look for the Euros.

Definitely improvement on the roster especially at big but same problems as always can’t shoot the 3 and can’t defend the 3
I know our 2 best players were out but all the other guys can’t shoot 3’s and that’s a problem

not going to overreact to anything in a meaningless game when we were missing out our top guard, but at SOME POINT IN MY FREAKING LIFE we have to emphasize 3 point shooting as a legitimate offensive weapon. Anyway Gurdak and Smith look like players
Yeah just said in Alec’s recap thread team definitely better especially at center but same problems as always can’t shoot the 3 and don’t defend the 3 and you can’t win games matching 2’s against 3’s that math does not add up

Jamichael Davis is a liability once again O. Turnover machine plays out of control with no range.
Mark stunk for the first 35 minutes. If JMike took the shots Mark took and was driving out of control he would have been crucified. JMike has never been a turnover machine either - never. He had twice the number of assists as Mark last year, and fewer turnovers while playing 350 more minutes than Mark. And no range? JMike led the team in 3 point percentage last year while Mark was near the bottom.Try watching the games.

He’d of been 4 of 14 if he took double the shots. Lino was 4 of 13 and wouldn’t have attempted as many if Tariq was playing. Lino also had 5 assists compared to Davis having only one. He’s capable of much more on both ends and it’s not even close. Does need to calm down and make smarter decisions but it’s not like JMike has great shot selection either.

Instead of looking at the bad like you do let’s look at the good. Villanova is allegedly the number three team in the BE. They have an experienced head coach who has won where ever he was. Our head coach never led an RU team before. He is learning as he is coaching. We were picked at or near the bottom of the Big. Nova is either not as good as expected or we are a hell of a lot better than the alleged experts thoughts. I vote for the second option with a bit of the first option thrown in. Remember Tariq and Syndor did not play today. They together would have tipped the scale.

If you say so. I watch the games attend the games. And played the game at this level. How about you? And I guess the 3 turnovers in a row he had first half didn’t happen. Marks just as guilty about not finishing. But this wasn’t about shot selection or finishing. It was about taking care of the ball and turnovers.

PS I see you edited your post since I replied. So I’ll address your changes. Again not a comparison with Marks and Davis. You’re making it such. And I’m not sure being a career 30% 3 pt shooter is a flex. That would get most people that play the 1-2 a seat on the bench.

And if he took ten times the amount of shots he'd have been 20 for 140 - just a stupid way to look at it. Again, again, again - he rarely turned the ball over last year and he had the best 3 pt percentage on the team.

Just look at the stats of both players last year. They are not close, and I coached at the D2 level.

It wasn’t a comparison between 2 players. And it’s not about last year. Why was he subbed out for most of the first half? Why did we go on a 10 point run when he came out? If you think he plays under control and is not a liability. Than you may be the first. If the kid wasn’t a liability on one side of the court he would have considerably more minutes. Kid is a fabulous defender.

I was very impressed with Gurdak.

Liked what I saw from Smith - who looks just like Steve Smith from Mich State.

Defensive Rebounding will be an issue.

Big guy on Nova did not impress me!
Rutgers 3 point shooting and defensive rebounding need improvement.Smith and Gurdak were Rutgers best players.I don't think Will Syndor or Francis played.

BK said all 4 guys who didn't participate today would be available in some capacity if the season started tomorrow.
Also Sydnor was throwing down like between the legs dunks in the warm up lines. I think he’s fine but seems he’s been out with an ankle injury for a while and has only come back in last week or so, so probably ramping him up.

I think the strategy for this team is to draw fouls and get to the line. We shoot free throws well last year and I believe that will be a key for our success.

I agree that we have to manufacture more 3 point attempts. I also don't think we should be taking 36 attempts like Nova because we dont have the same level of shooters . Increase the number of attempts in a reasonable fashion and with the right guys shooting them. We don't want the wrong guys just jacking up 3s.

Missing Francis hurts our 3 point game. Smith and Lino hit 4-9 from 3. Its an exhibition so I think some players have more of a green light. Gurdak took 3 which is probably too many . Mitteo took 2 which you probably don't want. Garravaglia had one that went in and out. This is what exhibition is for to figure out how we should best play to be successful.

This team looks more athletic than the last few years. Still no real offense though, everyone just chucks the ball up.
Most of Ruthger shots were off the dribble within the foul line. The absence of ball movement to create 3 point shots was noticeable as comrared to Villanova offense.Rutgers roster looks far more talented than last season even with Francis and Syndor not playing.

Gurdak looked great. Hope at some point he can knock down the open 3. He will need help on the boards. He pushed Suigo the nova big around and didn’t give up the key. Not impressed by Suigo and didn’t see the pre season hype 10th rated European import.
