Genius Way To Get AD Fired, Why Didn’t We Do It With Mitch?

Just a minute ago I was googling Arkansas football to see what Steven Soles has done this year since leaving UK. Instead, the top result was an article about Arkansas fans plan to get their AD fired. Win or lose they planned to storm the field the rest of the year to keep racking up $250k fines until it forces the school to fire the AD. It’s borderline genius and makes me wish we had done it years ago to get rid of Barnhart. I have no idea if they actually did after their loss today though. I’m guessing not since I haven’t heard anything about it.

You were one of Stoops biggest supporters. Ready to eat crow yet? Stoops wouldn’t have scored 14 against LSU.
There is nothing to eat crow about. I advocated for letting the season play out and acknowledged his accomplishments. I never made one complaint about his removal or made any case for keeping him after the seasons completion and was positive about the Stein hire from the get go. I predicted 8 wins preseason which was definitely more than most and I certainly hope he exceeds that at this point.

This was about Mitch anyway not Stoops and he is the guy who fired Stoops and hired Stein. I'd imagine you have already done the mental gymnastics to deny him any credit for that however.

Just wait until those fans discover that the school can no longer afford to fire/buyout the AD because of the millions they wasted with their field-storming antics.

Doesn’t sound at all “genius” to me. Downright counter-productive, in fact.

Because somehow a lot of our fans still thought Barney was a good AD. Just like they thought Stoops was a good coach!
Yeah that’s true. Our fanbase definitely has a certain portion of sackless fans that will support mediocrity for countless years regardless of how bad it gets. One of them even decided to post in this thread.

It’s the the same ones that defended Billy even as he was being chased out of Lex. Calipari while he was lying his *** off in that phony interview with Mitch. Stoops during last years finale while he was getting his head caved by Louisville on the way to b2b no bowl seasons, and they’ll be the same ones defending Pope right up until the news breaks of him being gone.

Pretty sure the school would realize it’s cheaper to cut their losses and fire the AD rather than to having to pay a quarter million dollar fine every week or two. Besides, we seem to be the only place dumb enough to give an AD a massive buyout since we hand those out like candy, or did.

Your idea of sackless simply means those who do not whine incessantly like some spoiled brat. You think people are accepting mediocrity if they are not of the opinion that the quickest way to rectifying the situation is always to fire everyone involved immediately any time your entitled demands fall short.

I don't recall one single poster defending BCG or questioning his removal. There are some still pining for Cal but I am certainly not one of them. I don't remember anyone arguing against moving on from Stoops after the Louisville debacle either. If Pope doesn't show considerable improvement over last years result in the near future I'd be surprised if thee is anyone opposed to moving on from him either. That doesn't mean everyone thinks he has to win 35 games and make the final 4 this year to keep his job though.

Not so fast my friend. If you remember correctly Mitch was going to keep Stoops and the board stepped in and overruled him. You say he hired Stein but you must have also forgotten a committee was formed and Barnhart said he was making the decision by committee. Then it was announced he was retiring earlier than expected. Mitch didn’t fire Stoops, didn’t hire Stein on his own and was shown the door right after the hire.

Do you have a credible link that says he was forced to fire Stoops? If that is true I never heard it.

I have been searching to find something to back your claim and I am not finding it. This is the answer I get from AI when entering "Barnhart was forced by the board to fire stoops" in search: "The search context does not support the claim that the Board of Trustees forced Mitch Barnhart to fire Mark Stoops. Instead, reports indicate that Mitch Barnhart made the decision himself following an annual review, though he faced mounting pressure from fans and apparently the Board of Trustees (BOT)."

The story is the same about Stein's hiring while searching to try to back your claim. I searched "Will Stein hiring by committee and not Mitch Barnhart" I found no credible links. The AI answer was as follows. "Contrary to the suggestion of a committee override, Mitch Barnhart officially announced Will Stein's hiring as Kentucky's head football coach on December 1, 2025, following the firing of Mark Stoops."

"While some fan speculation and unvetted forum discussions alleged that the decision was pushed by the athletic oversight board ("Champions Blue") against Barnhart's wishes, Barnhart publicly defended the hire as his own choice, stating he wanted a "risk taker" and an aggressive offensive mind. Barnhart described Stein's local ties as a "bonus" but emphasized that his offensive expertise was the primary reason for the selection, and he proceeded to manage Stein's introduction and staff hiring."

I also tried searching "Was Will Stein hired by a committee?" The answer was as follows.
"Based on the search context, there is a discrepancy regarding the hiring process. Official reports state that Kentucky hired Will Stein following a search led by Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart, who "pegged the man he wanted for the job" after parting ways with Mark Stoops. The process was described as wrapping quickly, taking less than 24 hours."

"However, an unvetted Reddit forum discussion claims that Stein was selected by a "3-person committee picking the coach" and that discussions had occurred with other candidates like Brian Hartline. This forum claim is not corroborated by the official news reports from major outlets like ESPN, CBS Sports, or Yahoo Sports, which attribute the decision directly to the athletic department's leadership."

  • Official Account: Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart led the search and selected Stein directly.
  • Unconfirmed Claim: A Reddit user alleged a "3-person committee" was involved, but this is an anecdotal forum post without official confirmation.
I also found nothing about Barnhart being "shown the door" only that he retired. When searching "was mitch barnhart removed at uk?" this was the answer.
"No, Mitch Barnhart was not removed; he is retiring as the University of Kentucky Director of Athletics."

"He announced his retirement in March 2026 to step down effective June 30, 2026, after a 24-year tenure. While he initially agreed to transition to a new $950,000 role as Executive in Residence for the UK Sport and Workforce Initiative, he voluntarily stepped away from that specific post-retirement position in April 2026 due to public criticism and concerns from Governor Andy Beshear. He is leaving the university entirely upon his retirement date, with departure terms being negotiated under his existing contract."

I also asked "was mitch barnhart forced to retire at uk?" This was the answer provided.
"No, Mitch Barnhart was not forced to retire from his position as Athletic Director at the University of Kentucky. He announced his retirement in March 2026 to conclude his 24-year tenure at the end of June 2026."

"However, he was forced to step away from his post-retirement role due to intense public and political scrutiny. After UK President Eli Capilouto created a new position for Barnhart as Executive in Residence for a sports workforce initiative—paying $950,000 annually with vague duties—criticism mounted from UK boosters, the media, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear."

"In late April 2026, amid this backlash, Barnhart decided to abandon the new role entirely and retire from the university completely on June 30, 2026, rather than face the controversy associated with the lucrative post."

Mitch was on the fence initially about Stoops. CRZ4UK likes to make scenarios in his head.

If you don’t remember there being people still backing Billy til the end then must have a bad memory. They were absolutely here and giving the same excuses that Popes been given. The biggest of which was “it’s only been two years, gotta give him time.” I specifically remember posters saying he should get atleast 3-4 years.

Some coaches you can just tell they don’t have what it takes to succeed. That should have been apparent with Billy no later than December of year 2. With Pope I’ve already seen enough to say I’m positive he won’t work here. As for coaches that actually do succeed, like Cal and Stoops, once they start losing and it’s not just one year fluke then it’s almost always over for them. Roy Williams at Carolina is the only one off hand I can think of that won, then fell off several years before managing to turn it back around and win big again. It may have been just a couple of seasons but he did get another title before he started going back downhill.

I just feel that Kentucky, atleast with Mitch, waits WAYYYYY too long to make changes that need to be made. Even when the change is made it was usually either forced onto Mitch by the coach leaving on his own or by outside pressure. Hopefully Batt isn’t that way.

You’re a sunshine pumper, can’t look at this realistically. Mitch should have been fired for the swim team thing, and Mark Stoops contract. While Stoops had his moments, it was most of his wins were fools gold. The SEC East was extremely down with a carousel of coaches at every school other than UGA. I bet you think Pope was a good hire and doing a good job too!

Wow. That a lot of AI.
what I said was from memory so I did research as well. Mitch publicly supported Stoops going into the last game. He then met with the LLC and BOT to review the season. Did a review on his own supposedly and then announced Stoops was fired. So who really made that decision? We don’t know really. It does take BOT approval to fire a coach with a buyout. Mitch was not even a voting member.
On hiring Stein you are correct. My memory of him saying he would not be involved was for his replacement. I admit my memory was wrong. He did say it. But about picking his successor.
AI won’t say who really makes the decisions at UK because it doesn’t know
AI says….When Champions Blue was announced, Barnhart emphasized that Kentucky was changing how athletic decisions would be made.
The public statements establish Barnhart’s involvement, but they don’t tell us whether Champions Blue members influenced those decisions behind the scenes.
AI says…..
A July 2026 Herald-Leader investigation revealed that Kentucky had hired Deloitte Consulting in July 2025 to examine restructuring its athletic department.

And I think that’s the distinction you’re trying to get at: Was Barnhart really making these decisions independently, or had the new LLC changed how decisions were being made?

AI doesn’t know. So ………
Mitch said he wanted 2 more years then announced Retirement. With all this I think he lost control, but that’s JMO.
You are correct that I don’t want to give Barnhart credit for anything. I wanted him gone 15 years ago. His reluctance to invest in football, reluctance to embrace NIL, Alcohol sales or anything 21st century killed UK athletics.

Your last paragraph sums up a lot of what BBN felt about Mitch. He talked down to fans, let Cal talk down to fans, hired Joker, BCG and Pope. Gave Stoops the second biggest buyout on record for a .500 coach. It was insane how bad he was for UK.

I posted all that only because you spouted off without doing your own research or providing any info. AI doesn't know because it only exists in your head. There is nothing factual available to back it. You state some strong opinions based entirely out of ignorance and imagination and never provide anything backing any of it.

If it can't be verified outside of biased rumors floated on message boards then there is no good reason to believe it.
True dat. Also if the administration wants to bury it . You won’t get it verified either. The swim coach settled the lawsuit and terms were not disclosed. The suit against UK and Barnhart are still in the courts. It’s not like it’s some internet rumor. One lawsuit has been settled. Another is ongoing.

You my friend don’t know me at all. 90% of my posts are research that most people don’t want to believe. I admitted I made a mistake on Barharts comment. I provided facts that the LLC, a paid study, and the BOTs changed everything about the way UK makes decisions. But, you don’t want to accept that. Barnhart sucked and you can to. He’s the worst thing to happen to UK athletics and that’s a tall order. Letting Bear Bryant go., Not hiring Schnellenberger and Mitch Barnhart are the worst things ever to happen to UK.

This is just more unfounded stupidity. You just restated your baseless opinion and never linked anything backing your claims. I'll not waste anymore time with this unless you can present a credible source verifying your claims.

There were fans absolutely supporting keeping Joker and Billy Clyde both up until the end.

Mitch hired Stein, and he was allowed to retire, not removed.
