Bye weeks don’t mute Shelby’s pain. Makes it worse because as he watches other games and teams instead, he sees exciting upsets, new coaches win big, etc.

Bye weeks are gut punches because they are a real-time window showing schools that care do something about losing. Our school doesn’t care.

The guy never should have been hired in the first place. This was Shelby’s outspoken opinion since day one, not a bandwagon opinion based on years of consistent losing ever since.

Who was your choice to take over the reins in 2020? Schiano was the the 2006 national COY and was the only coach in 40 years to have success at Rutgers. Who did you like that had a better resume and interest in the job?

I have a running joke for the last couple years at work. I have a whiteboard in my office where I track the total number of weeks in a given football season where Rutgers and the Giants both win on the same week. In 2025, it stayed blank all year. In 2026, it’s at one (RU beats Howard, NYG beats Tennessee). It really puts things into a pathetic perspective.

Waking up on the Sunday after a bye week is nice, because I'm not waking up thinking about Saturday's loss .
But come Monday night the nightmares begin when dreaming about how Rutgers will be playing on Saturday, no matter who they play.

Illogical question. Not my job, just like it’s not my job to have a good candidate list now. LOL Coach of the Year almost 15 years prior. Yippee. Terry Shea was the BE COY. Should he be a candidate now ?

But Shelby will play. Anyone with a recent winning history. Anyone who wasn’t already a proven failure for the decade before being hired back. Tampa, OSU and even at UT his reputation led to immediate fan revolt and rejection. The NE job was phony, BB giving him something current for his CV.

Hobbs knew better and didn’t want him and the story goes that he wasn’t even on the search firm’s list. But the big money people pulled rank and forced him onto us.

He was unfit for the job then and now. Obvious for 7 years and counting.

Whoever comes next might or might not make the program respectable. No hires are certain winners. But Schiano is a proven loser. He doesn’t deserve to coach another snap.

I don’t mean to be rude, but why do you always refer to yourself in the third person?

If you are going to say you don't like something, but not offer an alternative solution, then you're not contributing. Feel free to beat your chest that you got this one right. But it's not a terribly interesting conversation.

That’s not how it works, bub. Shelby knows when his car isn’t working, knows it needs to be fixed, but doesn’t know how. He leaves it to the experts.

Shelby knows football is broken. The Schianomobile is a fiery wreck. Almost every fan agrees. It’s up to the experts to fix.

BTW the experts didn’t recommend Schiano either. The fix was in, just like it was with Julie Hermann. When the wrong people make decisions, disaster looms. Schiano is a disaster of a HC to everyone to wants better than a 30% conference win rate (and dropping fast like a 58 yrd FG try into a 30 MPH wind).

Fan HC suggestion is a different topic.

I recall a Japanese restaurant where they served multiple courses but all small. Someone asked staff "why are portions so small?" The answer was "because looking forward to something is better than having it." There is hidden beauty in the chopstick offense (when GS says "keep chopping" he's not telling the whole story)

I liked that you called me "bub". That's good stuff. The rest of this post is crap :)

a good number of fans are ok with hiring Greg back to bail out the Ash mess...but where Rutgers screwed it up- the completely crazy extension when it was not needed

Correct, doesn’t contradict anything Shelby outlined. Schiano’s program is now a colossal sinkhole in both competitiveness and financial ruin. If that were the goal of HC Keep Choppin, he would be viewed as a huge success. But it’s not the goal.

Exactly!! He was already on an 8-year deal—extending him in 2023 after showing so little made zero sense. Who else was lining up to hand him $5M–$6M a year plus a buyout? There should never be an extension or raise until a coach actually proves it with multiple 8+ win seasons or one 10+ season or until someone is trying to poach him. A standard like this needs to apply to every coach at RU moving forward. We need to stop throwing money away. We need every dollar! Hopefully Zinn learned from this and doesn't repeat the same mistake.

Speaking of waking up on Sunday and not with a loss. It is much more fun to discuss things we did right and things we need to improve, when it is after a win.

Shelby65: we’re about same vintage. Can’t disagree with you more.Greg 1, the right man for the job; Greg 2 not so much but better than anyone else at the time. Has elevated the program a LOT. Give him the rest of this year before releasing.
