I’m not smart enough to know the answer, unless it’s just the obvious that people are idiots, but why is diesel all over everything at every fueling station? On the pump handle, on the ground, on the pump itself. What’s the issue? It’s every gas station i go to

Most of the time it’s because the handle didn’t click off in time to stop an overflow on a semi. Semis don’t have a small fill hole like a pickup truck or car.

Diesel foams plus the pumps are higher volume than gas pumps for filling bigger truck tanks so they invariably spew out. The foam doesn’t trip the nozzles fast enough.

Shameless hijack:

Unsure of details, but is the red dyed fuel lifted restrictions emptying off road diesel supplies, thus screwing over farmers?

Friend of mine works at a refinery north of Mobile. According to him this has nothing to do with the war. With oil prices where they are diesel should be $3.50 to $4.00 per gallon. This is simply supply and demand. Three refineries shut down on the west coast due to state regulations strangling them and three more older refineries were shuttered during COVID due to diminished demand. With record profits there’s no incentive to build or reopen refineries. It’s not going to get better anytime soon. Yall quit buy diesel pickups as daily drivers.

Everyone will continue to slowly learn this on their electric bills as well as cheaper more consistent Power plants have been shuddered under the umbrella of “green” energy. It’s a scam. Always has been. Huge train coming down the tracks.

Also it would be very risky to commit to building a refinery when you don’t know what crazy regulations might come from the White House in 5, 10, 20 years.

Germany legislated themselves into a crisis when they shut down their nuclear plants. With major increased increases in demand coming, a similar crises in USA is coming.

That’s exactly what he said but I didn’t want to make it political. He said that if they started construction today and the Democrats took control I 2028 it would all be for naught because they would shut it down before it was finished.

United States Diesel Refining Capacity
2017682,500 barrels/day
2018708,700 barrels/day
2019733,450 barrels/day
2020735,700 barrels/day
2021736,700 barrels/day
2022743,200 barrels/day
2023746,000 barrels/day
2024749,000 barrels/day
2025750,000 barrels/day
2026787,170 barrels/day

Yes there are less refineries but the refineries we have are expanding.

Diesel prices are a commodity and all these supply issues around the world are going to drive prices up.

The US refineries have been exporting the hell out of diesel the last four months because the rest of the world can’t get it anywhere else.

He’s wrong very wrong. You can point at Ukraine for bombing most of the Russian refineries. Russia was an EXPORTER of diesel. Now they’re an importer. Diesel cost is the direct result of less refining capacity.

We have to Reward domestic sales rather than punish exports

Congress could create a temporary domestic diesel supply incentive.

For example, refiners could receive a $0.20-per-gallon tax credit on qualifying additional diesel supplied to the U.S. market above an established baseline.

That would make domestic sales more competitive with exports without directly taxing exported fuel.

I’ve always wondered why a certain American persuasion doesn’t believe in “FAIR TRADE” when complaining about putting tariffs on imports from countries that charge exorbitant tariffs on our exports to them, or in many cases choose to limit their imports from the US, essentially saying we will send you our child and cheap labor built products but we will also use our child and cheap labor rather than import US products.

I had to read it three times. I agree with you. Maybe. I think I do. Maybe not, I could have interpreted it wrong.

What did he say that was wrong? He was referring to those people blaming the “war” with Iran causing the increase. Yes, Ukraine attacking Russia refineries hurts overall as it killed Russian exports , but multiple refineries being shuttered in the US and Oil companies who favor neither political party but only their own pockets are two major reasons! Even though I’m a Christian Nationalist Capitalist Zionist, I am in favor of some government control of Fuel production because it is essential to keeping this country moving!

The refineries are taking the money the market is giving them. Again our refining capacity has gone up every year. Shuttering some old refineries doesn’t change anything.

Is that math working for you? They were functioning refineries. cali guv shut 2 or 3 down. The 2 in Louisiana were shuttered by the owners. What you’re suggesting is every other refinery was operating a 2/3 capacity if you can subtract 5 to 6 operational refineries. If that is the case, then I’m definitely in favor of the government taking control of the oil industry. And I’m never in favor of the government doing anything more than standing up a powerful military. In fact, I would like to see the IRS, the DOE, and Medicare/SS run privately. But Fuel Oil is as important to outer defense as tanks and jets and boats!

To actually answer the question. Diesel is oil, gas is a volatile solvent. People spill gas as well, but it quickly evaporates and leaves little residue. Diesel doesn't evaporate, it just sits there as an oily mess, and it is stinky.

The IRS, Doe and Medicare/SS are not businesses and should not be treated as such. Government can be run efficiently. Au contraire to the statement that all private businesses are models of efficiency, they are not.
