Dang. Good for Urschel, I had been wondering about his chances for tenure at MIT. (Tenure at the top-ten schools is given only to the top 5% or so of candidates.) This seems seriously worthy of attaboys, a very big deal. General rule of thumb, if a math result shows up as a topic of discussion on a college football message board it’s significant. Serious attaboys for Urschel.

I once got a 6 on a Calculus exam in Advanced Calculus class in high school. Seriously! Out of 100. On back-to-school night, my parents came home and told me that my calc teacher told them that he thought my problem wasn't that I was weak in calculus, but that I was weak in algebra, even though I had received an A in advanced algebra the year before. I told them it's not algebra; it's him.
Anyway, fast forward to Math 110 and 111, and Mister "weak in whatever I was supposedly weak in" is helping others. Funny how life goes.

Math is easy, as there are only ten numbers. It's English that's difficult, with twenty-six letters.
Only bad thoughts. I don’t want to get ahead of myself and talk about things I don’t quite yet understand but it’s likely that more than a few PhD students have seen their work made redundant literally overnight. There’s a lot of work that AI can’t yet do but it can likely do a lot of grunt work. Being that my dissertation was grunt work (it was a calculation in cyclic cohomology, original but hardly earthshaking), I’m all “thank god I’m retired.” There’s a lot of truth in what Harry Crane said.
AI is a true human intelligence multiplier due to its ability to sift through massive amounts of data and identify hidden patterns. From discovering new medications and creating personalized cancer vaccines, to deciphering basic cellular biology and bypassing supercomputing bottlenecks, its applications are vast. We are seeing it revolutionize everything from precision farming to hyper-local weather forecasting. I use AI daily at work and absolutely love it—it makes me wish I was younger just to witness how far it will improve our lives and what humanity will accomplish next with its assistance.
