Can someone explain Class B to me?

I've seen multiple projections and they are confusing to me.

I was under the impression that it was the District champions from 1, 2, and 3 along with the 2nd and 3rd place team in each district and then highest power points from there minus District 4. And then the district champion from District 4 would qualify as the 16 seed.

Can someone help a brotha out?

Everything seems correct outside of the last part. The NSAA amended the District 4 champion not being the automatic 16 seed but seeded as usual based on power points. It's a disaster and the entire ordeal makes zero sense. Teams lucky enough to play those District 4 teams in their non-district games are reaping the rewards of getting a Division 1 or 2 game while teams that played, say Elkhorn or Norris, are going to get division 3 games.

I'm not going to pretend to have all the answers but there seems to be a lot of flaws here. One team from District 4 qualifying means there is going to be I think 3 teams that don't make the playoffs from the other 3 districts... 2-7 is going to get in. Platteview is going to be 7-2 (assuming they lose to Blair) and get left out. Now if you look at Platteview's schedule, I'm not sure if they deserve to be a super high seed in the playoffs but they found ways to win and I would argue they're at least a top 16 team.

Look all of those teams chose to be in this emerging district They chose not to play any of the other teams, they chose all of this, now they want to be rewarded for playing no one and make the playoffs after choosing this position fully knowing they would not make the playoffs. A lot of those 3-6 and 2-7 teams would be 7-2 or better with the schedule they all have. You cant know the rules and chose the system you voted for and then cry after about the rules after you agreed to it. If you want to have the same shot as everyone else then dont choose to be in that district Please remember they chose this. They real reason for the emerging district is to let these teams compete each week and have a more positive regular season not post season. I find it very difficult to reward teams for playing in this district, the reward is the district and schedule its self. NOW as far as the points for other teams playing them, I think the best would be setting the ermerging teams points at 41 max no matter the record for all teams playing them out of district Another option is only take 8 to playoffs in class B because 16 is way to many, make class B a 10 game regular season like many states have and only take 8 to playoffs

8-Man football got a lot of grief for going to 3 classes. However, with the numbers they have in each class, it was warranted.

11-Man football has to get creative and re-think classes. But in Nebraska, change is painstakingly slow and people scream about "how it's always been."

I don't disagree with this sentiment. They absolutely chose to play in the district. Similar to choosing to opting down a class, the consequence is being ineligible for the playoffs. Was thinking the same in regards to the 8-team playoff but my mind went to having a bye week rather than a 10 game regular season. You're probably on the right track with more games than less. The parity in Class B makes the 8-team playoff tough and scheduling would play a huge role in those 8 teams.

Seeding committee would be good in theory but who from that committee is going out to Scottsbluff to watch? Take injuries in to account similar to NCAA playoff committee? A lot of moving pieces in high school football. I don't know what the right answer is other than there needs to be more teams in Class B but this class has one of, if not the, highest discrepancy in enrollment percentage already.

I still like the 3 or 5 year points average for relegating and promoting teams between classes. Would alleviate the "competitive equity" waivers for less successful teams and complaints about parochial schools capping enrollments.

This is absolutely not true. NONE of the emerging teams "chose" to be in that district. They were sworn into it based on the previous two year power point average (games played by kids that aren't even on the rosters right now). Emerging teams were not allowed to opt out of the emerging district. On top of that, no team gets to pick their schedule. They turn in a wish list and are at the mercy of the NSAA to grant them games. They probably get 2, maybe 3 teams off their list. You play 9 total games. Teams pick 2-3 of those games, tops.

If you are Blair or Crete or Platteview you had 2 choices.... play in the emerging district and hope you can win every game in district to qualify, or opt down to class C1 and know you aren't qualifying no matter what.

Take this junk take somewhere else. Or at least find some facts to back this nonsense.

In my opinion the best playoff qualification system with the current district set-up would be to take the top 4 teams from the east, central, and west district. Then take the emerging district champion. That is 13 teams. Then whoever the next 3 highest power points are qualify as the 3 wildcards, regardless of what district they come from. Seed it based on power points 1-16. You could get all 6 teams from one of the districts. You might still get only 1 from emerging. You could also get 2 or 3 from emerging and 4-5 from each of the east, central, and west.

My biggest issue with the existing format is you are capping an existing team's potential based on prior team's performance. Three of the 5 teams in the emerging district are in the bottom 10 of enrollment in class B. The other 2 are higher, but have a pretty unique socioeconomic make-up. When you are the smallest school in a classification it takes a pretty special class to win consistently. That didn't happen the previous 2 years for Blair, Beatrice, Platteview....so now we limit what the existing kids at those schools can do? Yeah....that doesn't make sense.

if so then I see the problem but IT was my understanding they had to apply for the committe to put them into a that district and you could chose not to be in that district, if they truely had no choice that is not right either BUT I believe they did have a choice

The teams that are the worst-performing, via powerpoint standings over the prior two seasons, were the ones placed into the Emerging Distrcit.

With only 23 teams and four districts. Just seed the playoffs 1-16 off power points and districts mean nothing except the games played.

Best solution I've ever seen, from another state, as follows.. Theoretical example to fit same structure as what I had seen:

Class A = 24 Teams

3 Districts of 8

Everyone has 7 district games.
Everyone has 2 non-district games

Top 4 from each district = playoffs
12 team playoff (you can use power points or whatever you want for seeding)

Class D1 = 40 teams

5 Districts of 8

Everyone has 7 district games
Everyone has 2 non-district games

Top 4 from each district = playoffs
20 team playoff (you can use power points or whatever you want for seeding)

Justification - Make winning, and/or losing, games count. Not how good or how bad a team was. You want in the playoffs? Win more than you lose. NOBODY, regardless of who they play, should miss the playoffs at 7-2 and NOBODY, regardless of strength of schedule, should make the playoffs at 2-7!

Nebraska doesn’t have time ( calendar or weather) for a 20 team playoff.

Ok - 7 team districts. 6 district games and 2 non-district (lower classes with large numbers).. I mean, they found time for 32 team playoffs..
We are talking about class B here not the entire playoff structure. Eight man went to 3 classes there are no issues. Try to keep up

I dont think any class has a perfect setup for playoffs. Class B is a mess bc of the emerging district based on power points from the past 2 years of kids that have graduated. Class A should have their top 2 teams playing teams out of state on a weekly basis if possible bc they can compete with any high school team in the nations. This shows the talent that has moved in or is on Omaha. Class C1 and C2 are good this year bc of the number of teams in their class is about half of the teams. D1 is top heavy but all good teams will make it in. D2 is wide open and is good bc they are taking half the teams. D3 needs to take 20 teams bc some injuries to good teams early will hold them out of playoffs and alot of top end teams played each other. D6 works bc their are alot of bottom end teams.
In my Opinion each class should take half the teams in their class. If there is and odd number take one less or more and have first round byes. Play 8 game schedule. If you take half the teams you will not miss any teams and playing 8 vs 9 games keeps the bottom end teams from playing an extra game

16 teams are plenty in 8man . There are 40, 36 and 41. Respectively in D1-D2 and D3 . Injuries are part of the game.

In 8 man if they would play 8 game schedule would lessen games for bottom end teams and would free up some reffing in week 9 of the regular season. There have been years where the state champion was the 17th seeded team in the past and would not have made the playoffs either due to scheduling or injuries.

If the emerging teams have no choice and are forced into that district this system is unfair, if they have a choice then I am okay with only the district champ getting in BUT 16 out of 22 in the playoffs is ridiculous
The problem with the emerging district is like another OP posted its based on the previous 2 years PowerPoints. So now you are placing a team in that district on what kids not even currently playing accomplished as a team.

The current format for all classes does not work in football. There is no reason Texas has 6 classes of football and Nebraska has 8.

Football is the only sport in Nebraska where human intervention has to take over and replace old logic. We have handful of class A teams who couldn't compete against the top half of any 8-man division. Everyone knows who these teams will be well before coming up with schedules. Because they have a large enrollment shouldn't factor into their classification. It works in other sports because you don't need strength in participation numbers to be competitive like you do in football.

There should be an unbiased committee with input from all coaches to determine the top teams in the state.

Top 16 teams. Class A.
Next 32. Class B.
Remaining 11 man teams, Class C.
8-man. One class.

Yes they do. 23 teams in B is abysmal. I get that its how it works for now, there is too much off a separation from top to bottom of B and A. I love to complain but not sure what a good solution would be.

Everyone giving grief to 8-man going to 3 classes saying "participation trophies". Yet previously they had 55+ teams in a class and now have 35. Yet B only has 23 😂

Texas has 6 classes for the regular season. They have 12 state championship brackets. For example, once playoffs are set, they are then split in to separate brackets based on enrollment numbers. So there is a 6A-Division 1 champion and a 6A-Division 2 champion.

I would okay with this but would rather see
Top 32 in A
next 32 B
all other 11-man C
One class of 8-man
I also think this would help Teams with the coop decision

I think this is where Class B gets so tough. It's the smallest class but a huge discrepancy in enrollment numbers. Using this year's numbers, Class A's difference between largest and smallest school is 125%, C1 is 86%, C2 is 59%, D1 is 36%, D2 is 29%, and D3 is 127%.

Class B's discrepancy is 159%. There's no easy answer to fixing classifications, especially Class B but always fascinating that by far the smallest class has the biggest gap in enrollment.

This is accurate. Scottsbluff is 418. Platteview and Aurora are 161.
161 is 38.5% of 418.

Adding more teams to the bottom of class B (lowering the enrollment threshold) to increase the quantity of teams will only broaden what is already the largest gap in enrollment from top to bottom in a classification. Adding the bottom of class A to the top of class B does the same thing.

So you would have 115 8 man teams in one class .what would your Playoff structure be?
You could do what Texas does. Have 32 8 man teams qualify for the playoffs. The top 16 biggest qualifying teams are bracket 1 and the other 16 are bracket 2 and have two separate classes.

so no matter what state you look at, you have one class with a larger discrepancy, and yes I would put all 8-man in one class, in most states having over a 100 teams in class is normal, also in many many states have an enrollment difference of 150% is the norm. BUT whats best for Nebraska since the travel can be so far I would probably lean towards
A top 32
B next 32
C all other 11-man
D split in two classes
