I just posted earlier that cbb has an insanely out of control nil problem that is going to have lasting negative effects on the sport if they don't do something quickly.

Not only is there fan disengagement en masse, its now routine for long time coaches to just abruptly retire as the season starts.
I noticed your post in another thread and liked it because it’s not if but when

My mind goes to health reasons this late in the game, but your point very much stands. He could've just said enough of this, I got enough money and don't want to deal with the headaches. Maybe he had to deal with Jasper's uncle lol

Not a fan of this retire right before the season nonsense that Wright and now this guy pulled.
As a fan, I think I prefer this to watching our players bolt after a coach leaves. Altman has done Oregon fans a favor by waiting until late in the semester so that players cannot transfer. If they enter the portal, where will they go at this time of year?

Did tony Bennett do the same thing last year? Or the year before?

Even if it is health reasons, you can bet all the extra bs with this insane money played a part in creating those health reasons.

I know cal is whiny and a blowhard but he really raised some awareness about something i started posting about over a year ago - college basketball nil is way more than people think. People didn't realize the ninth guy on the bench was making almost a million per year.

Its way beyond out of control.

Fan of what? Totally screws these kids over. If it isn’t for a dire health reason, the coach committed fraud.

Yeah, Bennett did the same thing and I never heard of any health or family issues.

I don't have issue with guys getting paid, my main beef is with the unlimited free agency; which then causes prices to go way up. You can recruit a guy and tell them we got 1 million for you in year 1, and then 1.5 million in year 2 with a chance to make more. Then after year 1, another school enters the picture and says we got 3.5 million for you. Then that causes the bidding wars and prices just get absolutely crazy. The cat is out of the bag, just enter the portal every offseason and let the bidding wars begin.

The amount an individual player is making is not what's "out of control", that's what the market decided they're worth. More worrying is the imbalance money creates in general, destroying competitive balance. The solution is to make sure guys can get paid while ensuring all schools have around the same amount to pay out. The bigger issue killing the sport is the portal.

When a ninth spot guy is making over half a million, it is way out of control. Im not talking about a free market perspective, I am talking about the practical health of the sport.

Fans are quickly losing interest. Coaches are leaving. The nba is being dominated by non aau guys because aau mentality is ruining cbb first through fundamentals and now mentality.

Ya free market indeed dictates that 9th best player get paid 500k-1 mil but in a few years no one will make anything because it will be relegated to irrelevance.

It's Rome and its overspending all over again. Similarly, it's happening to the marching arts scene where so much money is being spent on props and show design, that the art no longer looks like what everyone grew up on. Kids don't march now, they dance and run. Electronics has taken over the scene. Yeah, it's not NIL, but it's the pursuit of drama and personality over substance and execution that is killing the event. Coaches simply don't want to be involved in a product that isn't the product anymore, band I don't blame them a bit.

College sports viewership is hitting record highs, completely disproving the narrative that fans are tuning out due to NIL or the transfer portal.

Here is the condensed breakdown of why college athletics remains a television juggernaut:

• Men's Regular Season Surge: Viewership for the 2025–26 regular season jumped 17% overall across rated networks, with men’s college hoops seeing a 20% spike (averaging 381,000 viewers across 1,100+ games) [sportsbusinessjournal.com].

• March Madness Boom: The 2026 Men's National Championship game averaged 18.3 million viewers—a seven-year high [ncaa.com]. The entire tournament averaged 10.9 million viewers per broadcast, making it the second most-watched March Madness since 1994 [ncaa.com].

• Football Dominance: Premium regular-season matchups routinely rival the NFL, with marquee games drawing up to 14 million viewers.

Why Ratings are Climbing

• The "Reality Show" Effect: Instead of killing interest, the transfer portal and NIL free agency have created year-round player drama, intense revenge storylines, and massive roster curiosity.

• Super-Conferences: Massive conference realignments mean powerhouse schools now face each other regularly, replacing predictable blowout games with high-stakes, marquee TV matchups.

Social media traditionalists may complain, but the data shows they are still glued to the screen.

I can tell that is an ai response which probably just summarized a reddit or blog post.

Cfb is as high as its ever been because they are handling nil way better somehow. In person attendance is still super high.

Cbb ratings will be down until March madness rolls around. Its in person attendance will be putrid. Just look at bbm with all the empty seats.

It's AI, but if you look, it has the sources listed([ncaa.com].and [sportsbusinessjournal.com]) and they're not reddit or blog post. The blog post and reddit post are the ones saying fans are losing interest. The data says otherwise.

I’m not certain that these salaries are dictated by an honest market. Most schools are losing money and have hit all their sources that they have for money. This current framework has no comparison to the pros. They function under a salary cap, can sign players to multiyear contracts and can release players. NIL still exists but that is truly market driven, negotiated by the business and player and has little relationship to the team they play for. Not all players pan out which makes it a crapshoot. Many schools have enough to buy at least one or two players and has spread the talent. Look at the teams that made the Final Four the last few years and it is a mishmash of teams many of which only once. I agree the portal makes it even worse. Putting together a new team every year and having sustained success is a coin flip. UConn has been able to not avoid the letdowns

My source is all the empty seats for bbm and that's after they gave away who knows how many tickets. Its everywhere though.

College football is as popular as ever.
