And yet 90% of these gamblers will swear to you they break even or come out ahead. Delusional.

It's really grabbing the yutes. It's like their version of our BMG 10 cds for 1 cent only way worse and slanted the other way . These gambling sites bombard their phones with "free" seed money to get them hooked.

Even when they decide to invest, they treat it like a casino - they think a 10% compounded return on an S&P index fund is way way to slow, so they get after meme stocks trying to hit the big one, or they get on Robin Hood and buy short term puts and calls. These guys are losing an insane amount of money doing that, and will cut and run on a stock if it has any down period, often the money grandma set them up with in a brokerage or IRA account. It's infuriating and pretty heartbreaking to see. Go cruise "wallstreetbets" on reddit if you want to see some crazy stuff.

Too many men are ruining their lives because of easy access to gambling. Obviously people are personally responsible but we don't need to make it so easy to engage in self-destructive behavior. I'm regularly reminded why I was a libertarian in my youth and ditched that ideology after becoming more mature and informed.

I've started to use the "options" apps and I bet a $10 parlay every week. 4-5 games. I'm up about $300 so far this season. One week I won $250 and I won $70 another week. It's been fun.

Sports gambling being a gray-market activity was the right amount. Legal in Vegas and a few other places, low-level bookies relatively easy to find, odds readily available but not like on the bottom line scroll on Espn.

Today, it's just way too much.

I'll admit to getting in on some of that action, but in small amounts and money I wasn't afraid to lose. Did OK during the meme stock craze. I definitely got in hoping to turn my investment into 17 you money, but that never happened. Wallstreetbets is pure gambling, and I'm not sure how much of it I even believe.

I appreciate that Mississippi makes you go into the casino to bet. That physical barrier makes it less convenient, so you really have to want to do it and takes away the impulse. I'll put $20 in here and there for fun, won a few but mostly lose. To me it's more fun than playing the lottery, except when Ohio State blows a 3 score lead...

Like everything in life, its all about moderation. Don't put your rent money in the casino unless you're prepared to be homeless. But unfortunately some people don't have that level of impulse control.

I have two coworkers who both gamble on both college and NFL games every weekend , they're both retirement age and neither of them are retired. I'll let you guess why.

Yeah, I don’t get it. Seems like an easy unforced error to avoid. Same as going to casinos. Looking for dopamine I suppose.

Just go for a walk instead.
The thing that amazes me is the sheer number of slot machines in those casinos. I can kind of understand the 21 tables or the poker rooms. Maybe even craps. But slot machines? People playing those look like zombies. The extent of my gambling was when I used to spend a week in Tunica every year for work, there's absolutely nothing to do there and Memphis is just far enough away to mostly say nah not going there. So after dinner, I'd go to the bar in the casino floor, put $5 into the video poker game and play 25 cents a hand while having a couple free beers and watching whatever sports event was on tv. Still pretty boring, but I could kill an hour that way and occasionally even came out ahead.

If God did not want them sheered, He would not have made them sheep.

Gambling is the best way to get fools to depart from their money. This is how the invisible hand keeps capital in the hands of the deserving.

I’m going to say something unpopular: the more stories I hear and people I talk to, the more I believe gambling should be outlawed. I’m 36, and I’ve already seen far too many men wreck their lives over gambling. A few months ago, I was at the park watching a dad pace while his kid played. He had a prop bet on someone hitting a home run, and he lost. I encouraged him to get help. His response? “Dude, I’m good. Just on a cold streak.” Watching a man consumed by a bet while his child plays nearby should make us question what we’re normalizing. Meanwhile, the ads are everywhere. ESPN, Barstool, seemingly every sports broadcast. We’re selling gambling as part of being a sports fan, while families deal with the consequences. I’m tired of watching it happen. It needs to go.

I don't necessarily think it should be outlawed. But it should be like cigarettes. Legal if over 18, but no advertising of any kind.

Why do you hate America?

Advertising let's us know about opportunity.

What about the lottery? Scratch games at convenience stores? Where do you draw the line?

Sorry for the kids and families whose Moms and Dads can't pick a winner.... but that's the way you do it.

In the palm of every kid with a phone too.

We had to search out our vices walking both ways up hill but seriously these yutes have it tougher with so many vices easily and legally accessible on their phone.

Hmmm… sounds like NIL too. Remember when paying players was done under the table and now it’s out in the open and nobody is happy with it.

My all-time success story from a casino occurred at the Jimbo's Truck Stop at the Canton exit in the mid '80s. Put one whole quarter in the Blackjack machine and turned that into a smooth $5 bill. HUGE money for a broke 15-year-old.

I had a work colleague once who would lose all the time on sports betting. Inevitably, he would run down all his bets and rationale on Friday, but come Monday, when I'd say something like man, tough break on that Vikings game, and the Ole Miss game, and, and, etc. he would then launch into gamble speak claiming to have teased this and parlayed that, and that he ended up doing well despite the fact that every single bet he described on Friday was a loser. It was comical. I suppose it was possible that he really did weave a complex web of bets and counter bets and he spared me the details for some reason, but I doubt it. His words would say he won, but his moods could not corroborate those assertions...

This also applies to vapes. When I was a teenager the only thing that kept me from chain smoking cigarettes was fear of getting caught because of how bad they smelled.
