Well in that case they should probably stop requiring proof of being legal to live and work here. I mean I can still get my job done even if illegals were working here. Heck, Iām sure the company could get some better feedback by hiring them.
What type of work are people doing for the company if they canāt even communicate?
Or are we keeping up the trend of giving the crap jobs to all those that shouldnāt even be here because no one wants to work those jobs anyway. If thatās the case, why does their input even matter?
Well, first, requiring proof of being legal is NOT an option. It's the law. They don't have a choice. I don't work in HR, so I'm not current, but I managed a restaurant for a couple of years after college and back then I had to have a copy of paperwork that either "proved" they were a citizen or authorized to work in the US. Honestly, I just took the paperwork they gave me and made no effort to see if it was authentic or not. I just made copies and shoved it in a file. I'd be willing to bet that I had a few folks that were here illegally and frankly, I didn't give a shiit then, nor do I now. I wanted folks that could cook, clean, and generally do their jobs. Period.
Obviously, I have no idea if there are illegals working at your company or not. But not every job requires fluency in English. For example I hired the wife of a neighbor. He'd just left the Army and he met his wife in Korea. She had very little English, but he asked if she could get a job as a dishwasher. I hired her, and we communicated with single words and gestures. She was a hell of a dishwasher and I never had to say anything about her job. It was indeed a crap job and her English improved a bit and she left b/c she got a better job with a maid service. I only saw her a couple of times after that....
Point being that you don't have to have great communication to be a good worker. There are jobs (and I admit that they are mostly crap ones... Janitor, landscaping, mail room, etc). That don't require a lot of speaking, just good work ethic. There ARE people that are here legally that don't speak English very well and they probably never will. But their kids will.
