Get a General Manager that can improve portal outcomes. You’d hope we can land more quality players who could augment the players that are developing this year. This is probably the most likely route to success next year.

if a change is made, it looks like the Academic side is going to have to pay for it, because the AD sure doesn’t have the funds, and no matter how much game people talk here, they aren’t stepping up. So the professors won’t be able to get a raise because we’ll be paying Schiano’s buyout.

The worst outcome would be to get a new coach who still loses to MAC and low level teams ACC teams. See Chris Ash.

if Schiano were to be wacked, it would be open season on the roster, which would be picked dry of all good players. And we’d be starting from ground zero, with inadequate NIL support. And a new coach that would need to learn how to effectively recruit Rutgers, something most haven’t considered. A situation that has inadequate NIL, inadequate facilities, and an unappealing campus. Chris Ash was here four years and he still didn’t figure it out.

The #53 recruiting classes aren’t good enough. We need the #99 recruiting classes of yesteryear. Just looks like a 💩show waiting to happen.
We’ve pointed out in multiple threads that Greg has in fact 2 general managers. It’s not a spending problem it’s an allocation problem.

And I’ve pointed out that if you have 2 general managers that aren’t producing, and lack the requisite skill sets, you need to replace them with someone who can produce. This shouldn’t be amateur hour. Miami is paying a former Ravens front office member a lot of money to manage their portal and NIL efforts. We should be doing something similar.

You didn’t point anything out. Because you said there wasn’t a GM. Until Richie and I pointed it out to you. Kelli gave Greg the money to spend properly on one person. He chose to hire 2. And it’s because he didn’t want to give up overall control. That’s amateur hour personified.

$18M over 4 years is significant unless you’re going to cover it. That is contractually obligated, unless they negotiate another arrangement.

Should the professors forgo their wage increases? Because that’s the budget it’s going to be paid from, the academic side.
Over 4 years? So $18M from $20B+. LOL!

The aforementioned changed the trajectory because donors stepped up. We would need $20M minimum to change the trajectory. Can we do it?

Penn State spent $32M total, and their class and season is a disaster. Too many needs, too little money. We are likely to replicate same, if people don’t step up.
Matt Campbell was also happy to just bring along his team from Iowa State, they added little else, and it turns out they have not been up to the task with the tougher competition.

Which is why change is needed. He will be more amenable to giving up some control because the portal efforts have been a disaster.

Portal has been a disaster because for all intents and purposes Greg sat out the last 3 recruiting cycles. Can’t f’up the hire/fire process 2 years in a row and think you’ll be successful. You’re blaming all the wrong people.

1. The roster is filled with "bargin bin players" (according to you) who arent competitive. So it won't really make a difference.

2. Is our current roster much more competitive than Ash teams?
Reminder - Ash had much less resources than Schiano. Let alone the rest of the conference.

3. Is the current show not 💩?

4. Now the key question you never answer or consider: what if Schiano is NOT the best possible coach we could ever get? What if random MAC coach X could actually coach up and be better than Schiano?

The inherent bias of "only Schiano is best possible coach for the current situation" shades every response you make.

Suppose there are 100 coaches who would be viable candidates.
You assume Schiano is the #1 coach on that list.
Purely because he's the only one who had done it.
Refusing to consider the circumstances around only Flood or Ash being the alternatives.

Competing in the Big Ten was always going to be a massive financial commitment for Rutgers, as it is for every other program. I knew this and said it here back when you were invited, though I won't pretend I foresaw just how the cost of competing would completely metastasize over this time.

Still, here you are. And if you are to remain the Big Ten, which seems to be the only course considered, this is what it is. And if you are in for a penny, you have to be in for a pound, especially since it's not like the choice of retaining Schiano is the difference between solvency and deep debt. That's already the case, so with that cost already being sunk, your best course is to try to get something for all of this expense.

Firing him is a no-brainer. To retain him is malfeasance. He should've been sent packing after the 2025 season, and I'm sure Zinn would've loved to do just that, but she read the room and understood the way some powerful voices still cling to the guy in a pathological way. And that failure to act had you lose out on Bob Chesney or some other perfectly attainable, skilled coach. But after six straight losing seasons in conference, including a 2-7 faceplant in 2025, there was no compelling reason to run it back with the same coach, whose long record of steady ineptitude across two eras at Rutgers yielded no hope that this year would be any better.

Rutgers Athletics is already in a deep financial hole, but it won't wish its way out of it. You're always going to run at a deficit, but without being able to field a competitive football team, it's only going get worse. Again, in for a penny, in for a pound.

Clearly you’ve never had subordinates and had to manage them. One mistake, you learn from it, two mistakes you start documenting potential performance issues, we’re on like mistake 20 this year. There’s not even a PIP that can help him at this point given all the money he’s cost Rutgers.

As far as #2 is concerned, this roster would kill that 2019 roster. Ash didn’t have to deal with teams loaded up with significantly more talent because NIL didn’t exist and got the doors blown off weekly.

As bad as this season has been people comparing it to Ash really are misremembering how pitiful it was. That OL couldn’t block, the D which was ether than this one was worn down by halftime because the O was so ineffective and the punter was the best weapon.

Rutgers can't afford not to fire Schiano by end of this lost season. The 6.5 years track record of Schiano's return is pathetic:
- Topped out at 7 Wins in 2024 based on beating 3 weak OOC opponents
- 15-41 In-Conference Record noting out of the 15 Wins only 1 Big Ten opponent finished with a winning record (2024 Minnesota)
- 0 Wins against Ranked Opponents
- 0 Wins against Penn State even in a 2025 down year for Penn State
- 2025 Season of a Lost Opportunity with best statistical Offense in a decade and a QB that's playing in the NFL. Rutgers couldn't even make a Bowl game
- 2026 Season 2 Losses to OOC Opponents with significantly less NIL money than Rutgers

Name 1 Program in a major Conference that would accept the above results and continue with the status quo for the ongoing future? There's absolutely nothing anyone can point to that indicates anything will get better under Schiano going forward.

The worst excuses in the world is either Rutgers cannot afford a good Head Coach to replace Schiano or no other Head Coach can perform better than Schiano (as the excuse points to the hiring of Ash). Both are nonsense. If Rutgers is going to continue playing in the Big 10 Conference, and we assume this is a given, it has no option but to find the money to replace Schiano and Staff and hire a competent replacement. The Bar is set Low for the next Head Coach.

Time for RU to put on the big boy pants. Tate and Zinn know what a real program looks like and this isn't it.
It’s already in motion even if it isn’t happening along the timeline many want. They know that everything that Zinn has built and is laying the groundwork for is at risk if a change isn’t made.

We don't get millions in donations. Our fan base is too small and doesn't give. We're not PSU and LSU.

It makes zero financial sense to fire him. We won't get a payout.

And we will fire him and explode the deficit to take a flyer on a coach to at best go 7-5 and back to the pinstripe bowl in a few years. We're not winning the big ten with our NIL.
you are wrong, you have zero idea what you are talking about

there is no way you are a graduate of Rutgers, like zero chance.

Al, I've told you all this before but willful ignorance should be punishable by public floggings

Greg’s two general managers, Josephs and Wolkstein, were hired years before Keli joined.

Yea I know. Kelli gave him the ability to “hire” “employ” whatever you want to call it. He didn’t want to relinquish control and stayed with status quo.

At this point- I have no problem with giving Greg the rest of the year- it is going to be a 1-3 win season regardless. And what are you going to do to replace him right now. Kelly? Please NO

But, unless he finds 5 wins and an upset of a big name- even if that big name is having a crappy year- he has to go the day after the season ends.

As for the money- First- whatever Greg and any of his staff members make that their next gig, comes off our $$$ owed. So- realistically- cut that cost by 40-50%

Also- doubtful we draw in a $7+M HC to take the job so we are going to find that $3M ish un and comer. And they also will not have 120 staff members.

More important- we are losing fans, we are losing paying fans, both at the stadium, online streaming and also merchandise.

Making a move - recovers some of those losses back.

They financial cost is much less than what everyone likes to throw out there

Yes - this is where I’m at. Maybe at a later point in the season there may be some sitting coaches we have on radar to put feelers out on but I think it’s still too early in the season to know who we want to target anyway as a replacement. I don’t see an urgent rush but agree it has to happen the second the season ends. Nobody is coming to watch us the season whether Greg is the coach or an interim except real die hards.

Agree with most of it but no one is hiring Greg Schiano. Not at any real salary to make much of difference.

keeping him just reinforces the narrative that we don't belong, are not serious about winning and are a joke of a program. The narrative and perception needs a complete overhaul, this is how you start it

No one at all was trying to hire him as a head coach prior to 2.0. Perhaps he could’ve latched on somewhere as a defensive coordinator. Now, he’s radioactive as a HC and the defenses he’s presided over at Rutgers would preclude him being a candidate for most DC jobs. He seems to have an increasingly small number of friends in the business, which won’t help him even latch on as a buddy pick.
