Thought you just forgot the victories over Duke and Gonzaga and that was Gonzaga in Washington by the way, and they own Tennessee. If you think Billie G is a better coach, you really need to self ban your dumb ***.
How does Kentucky own Tennessee when we beat them in regular season but get beat by double digits when it counts. 0-1 in the ncaa tournament. If you think Pope is way better you need to self ban your dumb ***....see how that works. Now yall little sissy boys quit getting all worked up over some opinions.. good lord

It's bad when on a forum with thousands you can name the posters that love Pope more than the program. Forget it if we are ninth seeds in the sec tournament. As long as we make our boy Pope feel like hes a good boy doing a good job.

Literally lost the same amount of games as Billy G.

And acknowledging Pope isn't it doesn't have anything to do with the team. I haven't gave up on them. I gave up on Pope.

I'll take the same team with Billy G in charge. Just gotta get rid of the beautiful chess player. Wrong sport. This is basketball

BCG's teams never quit. Quitting is a hallmark of Pope teams. BCG actually built teams before being hired at UK. I don't want either coaching UK but if I had to take only one of them then I'm taking BCG every day.
You have repeated this garbage numerous times. You think the Cat's gave their all for 40 minutes while getting crushed 93-52 by Vandy for example?

I always get this sneaking suspicion that Pope’s coaching peers don’t really respect him. A lot of them act weird towards Pope for some reason. Even freaking Dick Vitale who praises every coach under the sun with lavish exaggerations acts rather coldly towards Pope. I remember when he spent a whole broadcast going on a tangent over our alleged $22 million roster. It’s weird. I know we all can’t stand Vitale, but he’s usually quite complimentary towards Kentucky.

I kind of wonder if BYU fans accusations that Pope is a bit of a dickhead behind the scenes is true.

Opposing coaches are PRAYING he stays at UK lol

Seriously though, Pope has zero social awareness and can be a bit of a brat. He is whiny when things don't go his way. His one interview with Tom Leach (after a bad loss - don't remember which) was just painful to listen to. Not long after he joked about killing himself. Then his whole "they cheated us" tirade at Auburn. You would think that is just passionate frustration but then he does stuff like posting that ridiculous picture of him drinking on the beach (sure Mark) and his standing on a pedestal during BBM in his "dark Pope" get up. How can you take him seriously as a coach?

Saw a bit of it year 1, but im starting to think that was a bit of a fluke... more about having like 7 fifth-year seniors who dont make many mistakes.

Yeah, I was pretty complimentary of Pope's first year. He did take over late and had to build his roster with whatever was available. And he won some big games. I'll give him that. But I think many of the transfers he got where excited just to come to UK and not specifically play for Mark Pope. Kentucky was still a hot brand and they were getting a shot after others said no. And it was a pretty good team. But Richie Saunders did not want to follow Pope to UK. I thought that was odd. He says he prayed on it but it is still strange. And Jaxson Robinson waited till the VERY LAST MINUTE to come to UK. Everyone was like "oh Pope and him are just playing the fans to build suspense". But he waited until there was no possible shot of him getting drafted before committing. And then something happened that year because Pope had to overpay to get almost anyone he wanted in the portal for year two. Nobody wanted to play for us. After a year of Pope in Lexington something started putting recruits and transfers off. So I think the first year was definitely an outlier.

Much ado about nothing. They did cheat us at Auburn and I was glad he said something about it. He just needs to win some more games and the rest of it is irrelevant. I have said many times schedule and injuries matter.

People are blinded when it comes to mark pope. I’m telling you, he’s the worst thing to ever happen to Kentucky basketball! He’s not a top 50 coach! He’s never won anything at any level! Kentucky is now Indiana
A lot of people on this board will be eating crow If Pope ever gets a team into March with a healthy starting 5.
First 2 seasons, 3 injured starters come tournament time. No Point Guard!

I would love to see the record of some of this boards "golden boy" coach's if they had to play that hand.

We didnt get made fun of like we are now. Im sure we did a little because we are UK and usually great while Billy G sucked....but I don't we were s national running joke. The pr Pope and Kentucky have had the last two years is terrible.

I bet when Billy G was the coach everyone knew when big blue madness was. Bet it was packed out and people were excited at least a little bit.

Worst part about Pope, which arguably makes him worse than Billy G, is that he is “good enough” to keep him for more than 3 years. At least we got rid of Billy after 2 years. How much must we suffer with Pope’s incompetence? 4 years? 5? I’d take 2 years of Billy G over 3 of Pope.

And for as much as Billy was awful off the court, we didn’t the amount of crap thrown on us like we are with Pope. Opposing fans treat him like freaking Tom Crean. It’s legitimately embarrassing that Pope is our coach. And Billy G was screwing coeds!

Do you know how embarrassing it is to get made fun of by BYU fans? Freaking lily white Mormons? When Mormons think your coach is freaking weird, he must be unusually weird.
I think we are stuck with Pope for at least 4 years. That's when the buyout becomes nothing. It also coincides with when there is no buyout for Nate Oats at alabama.

This is what Kentucky does and has done for some time. It's a dud hire, it was always a dud hire. It's the last of the butthole barnhart scrubs. Mark Pope is not Kentucky material - fact. Never was - fact. If you think he is, out his resume up and stop talking. I want to see his head coaching resume without the mouth and without his name even attached, but the same Cowboys are doing their thing again, only they lost a cow and gained a cow.

Why in the world would a UK fan sit by and watch this nonsense go on in this program. I don't know. But either way he's gone soon and that's going to happen either way. Kentucky will make the right hire next because they have to. The barnhart era will officially be dead and the usual suspects will jump again and pretend they never supported Pope in the first place.

The main reason other than Barnhart being lazy we ended up with pope was timing. Cal left so late we were left scrambling to make a hire. None of the big names wanted the job either. Nil has changed the landscape on coaches needing that big brand.

^^This. If Pope is even mildly average and wins 20 games, avoids scandal, and wins a game in the tournament he most likely gets year 4. Too many things working against timing of firing him sooner. Especially if a slue of the old guard (Pitino, Izzo, Self, Barnes to a lesser extent, etc) retires after this season and the coaching search is diluted by other solid programs (with money) looking to fill a void at skipper.

And do you lack the ability of understanding we are not getting any body but Hampton
This isn’t far fetched! But, because it technically hasn’t happened yet, some posters will scoff at the idea, and then change their narrative when it does happen!

Folks, if Pope whiffs on his entire top 10 targets, and most likely he will, there’s no defending it… Period!

BTW, it’s worth noting, Pope most likely overpaid for Hampton as well, since Hampton IMMEDIATELY dropped a couple of dozen spots right after signing with UK, which Pope (or Hampton) couldn’t possibly of known was going to happen. Like purchasing a TV for $1000, and the next day it goes on sale for 40% off, but you can’t get the difference back from your purchase 🙄

Haha you haven’t bueen around long enough to remember Billy G I take it.

If I recall, their records aren't much different at all.

Billy g was an amazing coach he just self destructed through alcohol. Its a substance I enjoy but ruined the lives of many. He was a young rising star when we hired him that just completed an amazing program building and ncaa tournament run.

Pope on the other hand is perpetually mediocre. He was mediocre his entire 10 year head coaching career. Never won an ncaa tournament game. Then came here and is so far mediocre.

If you compare only the quality of hire at the time it was made, billy g was by far the better hire and it wasn't even close. Had Pope not played here he would've never been on the radar.

Ps the fact Mitch survived hiring billy g and joker back to back was a clear indicator how entrenched he really was. That would've been the end for 99% of ads, but not him.

Idc what either resume was before they got hired. Neither deserved the job. Pope has done better than Billy in the 2 years he’s been here however. I think this team buys him a 4th year and things get going from there. This is more of a team his coaching style is suited for. A shooting and passing type of team with multiple guys who can set things up. Last year he overcompensated for whatever reason no one knows.

No worries, this new AD wants to win in everything. If Pope struggles another year or two, he will be let go by the AD. And we will hire a great coach.
Exactly. Best thing to do is just hope pope turns it around and if not we will hire someone else. But just hoping he sucks is the wildest thing ever. Who cares who the coach is as long as we win? I don’t.

That rating doesn't make any difference on what kind of player he actually is. I'd be willing to bet if he committed to Puke he wouldn't have dropped and may well have moved up.

HS recruiting can be irrelevant if your portal class is strong enough.

I’m all in on Oats if Pope doesn’t turn it around. I don’t see a better option that reasonably comes here. We all want Kentucky to be a top program again but that probably means four years of Pope to get there, just like you said.

Even the most optimistic people on here have acknowledged Pope needs to be better. So I get why people want to speed run it — it’s probably still a couple years from changing though. You drop Pope too early and then you’re all in on Billy D turning us down yet again and then grab another mid coach. Better to wait it out and get Oats or Pope step up and bring the fans back on board.

I wish the timeline was different but we are where we are for now. Still think Oats can be a Pitino-lite with Kentucky resources.
