Our athletic department was already the most heavily subsidized by the university in the conference last year.
I have been told that is because of revenue sharing and it likely won't ever stop. My question is, if the athletic department needs funding from the University then the AD is running a deficit and there is no revenue to share.

It's university revenue at that point.

So under the rules the University has to kick in the money for athletes even though they are already paying their tuition and books? I guess we are in for another round of tuition increases for regular students so we have the cash to pay athletes who can't play football.

All in all, it seems like an injustice for everyone except football players.

It's an institutional choice to maintain the school's standing as a major athletics participant. I'm not defending it as correct. It might not be correct, but it is definitely preconsidered and intentional.

The AD pays the university for tuition & books, among many other expenses such as housing, meal plans & the band.

That's really just semantics if the University has to kick in 42 million to balance the AD budget.
Yeah, it's sort of like you giving your kid money to put gas in, buy tires, make repairs and maintain the car you own, but he gives you $50 a month to help with insurance.
