If you've followed the tracking on him, you'd know. This one is about as crystal clear as it gets that he's being used as NIL leverage. He's been through Ville, UConn, Arkansas. Now he's delayed adding UK to the visit field on the back end after most rumors are that his NFL agent is trying to squeeze as much NIL as he can out of Cal.Since when is pursuing great players being desperate? That’s the expectation, isn’t it? Don’t we want our coaches to be desperately trying to add good players, or am I missing something?
I get it you hate Pope but this post is embarrassing and makes you look stupidBCG is a far better coach than Pope. And had accomplished far more before being hired here. He was a bad hire. But he was better than what we have now.
Well, there was the trunk coach that got us on an extremely serious probation. Then there was the psychotic coach that chased players into the bathroom.People are blinded when it comes to mark pope. I’m telling you, he’s the worst thing to ever happen to Kentucky basketball! He’s not a top 50 coach! He’s never won anything at any level! Kentucky is now Indiana
Or Sutton who literally brought the program to its kneesHaha you haven’t been around long enough to remember Billy G I take it.
Agree. Give me Billy G all day every day over Pope. Been saying this.
Mostly agree, if assuming you put Acuff from last year in that AD once a decade freak category. Obviously they didn't win a title, and he was pretty soft on defense, but outside of freak point guards like that, recent teams with much postseason success aren't often being led by freshmen point guards. Outside of Acuff, no freshmen point guard led teams made the Sweet 16 last year.Does anyone really want a true freshman point guard ever again? I could see if they were a AD once a decade freak, but just a normal 5 star freshman aint cutting it as lead guard. Cal proved that over and over again.
Turd sandwiches either way like someone said this morning lol. Records are damn near identical.
Some people are very recency bias or don’t remember how bad Billy g was. Recruiting middle school kids and guys nobody had ever heard of.
Not even the same league it was back then and he still was awful. Recruiting was way worse as wellTurd sandwiches either way like someone said this morning lol. Records are damn near identical.
Random fact: I was in Rupp Arena for the sweet sixteen when Eddie and Sean Sutton first returned to Lexington with Okie State. I had never heard boos like that before.Or Sutton who literally brought the program to its knees
Means no uvwo I suppose for them.I think Anderson is going to Providence. I've heard they are basically willing to spend all their NIL money on him. But who knows?
I don't t get that argument. We haven't seen Billy G with UKs resources and NIL era. Dont even think Pope was a coach when Billy G coached here. So its hard to tell. I think Billy G would recruit better than Pope today with UKs resources. Not even the same league it was back then and he still was awful. Recruiting was way worse as well
You think players just now started getting paid. That’s cute.I don't t get that argument. We haven't seen Billy G with UKs resources and NIL era. Dont even think Pope was a coach when Billy G coached here. So its hard to tell. I think Billy G would recruit better than Pope today with UKs resources.
He most definitely wouldn't be known as Whiff God. You know how hard it is to become a whiff God?
Cute? Players got paid yes..... they weren't getting paid millions. There weren't 22 million dollar rosters. Get real. A john wall back then might have gotten a couple hundred thousand and his mom a car or apartment...You think players just now started getting paid. That’s cute.
Good analysis and totally agree with you. If there is a spot on the floor you want seniority, it's PG. I'm not a big believer in a freshman PG.Mostly agree, if assuming you put Acuff from last year in that AD once a decade freak category. Sweet 16 Starting Point Guards last year:
Arizona - SR Bradley
Houston - SR Uzan
Illinois - SR Bozwell
Arkansas - FR Acuff
Michigan - JR Cadeau
Alabama - SO - Philon/SR - Wrightsell split duties
Texas - SR Pope
Iowa - SR Stirtz
Nebraska - SR Hoiberg
Duke - JR Foster (Though Freshmen Boozer did get some time while Foster was injured)
ST Johns - SO Jackson/SR - Darling split duties
Purdue - SR Smith
UCONN - JR Demary Jr
Michigan State - JR Fears Jr
Tennessee - SR Gillispie
Iowa State - SR Lipsie
I believe it - they've been in on a number of top guys, and unlikely to get more than one so might as well go all in on one. Hodgson can sell. Very interesting. If they do get him, that means Malone has a ton on pressure on Rosser. Or he's going to be in on the biggest bag contest with Henry.I think Anderson is going to Providence. I've heard they are basically willing to spend all their NIL money on him. But who knows?
He had Kentucky resources and still recruited bums and middle schoolers. Also before nil not every school was willing to funnel lots to basketball players. That’s why most the talent was concentrated to smaller number of schools. Now that everyone is paying it’s spread out way more. So should’ve been easier like when cal came. Cal would’ve never got all the talent he did like 2015 roster in this new era.Cute? Players got paid yes..... they weren't getting paid millions. There weren't 22 million dollar rosters. Get real. A john wall back then might have gotten a couple hundred thousand and his mom a car or apartment...
They weren't making more than NBA players back then. Think we had a 6 million dollar player in Billy Gs time? Now that's cute. Really its kind of retarded.
Someone broke out the Johnny Walker Black early today I see..BCG is a far better coach than Pope. And had accomplished far more before being hired here. He was a bad hire. But he was better than what we have now.
That seems to be what the smaller type schools have gone to now. Try to lock up 1 big name with a lot of the nil then supplement the rest of the roster with portal and retention.I believe it - they've been in on a number of top guys, and unlikely to get more than one so might as well go all in on one. Hodgson can sell. Very interesting. If they do get him, that means Malone has a ton on pressure on Rosser. Or he's going to be in on the biggest bag contest with Henry.
Why wouldn't he? Dukes coach is loading up on talent. Arkansas has been pretty damn stacked with talent. He had Kentucky resources and still recruited bums and middle schoolers. Also before nil not every school was willing to funnel lots to basketball players. That’s why most the talent was concentrated to smaller number of schools. Who me??????nothing much worse than a coward that plays the “who me?” card.
NIL world makes it tricky for sure to find a "playing behind a veteran floor general is better for my career in the long run" 5 star point guard coming out of high school. But that is pretty much what they need to do, be the backup for year, get reps, learn the office, learn the speed of the game at that level, learn the decision making, learn how to lead a team and then take the keys year 2. Out of all the positions, I think that is the one that needs college experience the most but usually has the most (me first) guys who don't want to sit.Good analysis and totally agree with you. If there is a spot on the floor you want seniority, it's PG. I'm not a big believer in a freshman PG.
Look at the F4 before that, and it was all Clayton, Proctor (not a fan of), Houston had the older kid and Auburn was flat out old. UConn had a really old Newton for their B2B.
If I'm playing a freshman PG, it's alongside a more senior combo guy, not unlike Wagler & Bozwell. The best place to place talented frosh are the 2/3.
10 of the last 18 Tourney MOP's have been PG's.
Duke isn’t playing on the same level. They have team USA and lot of nba influence pushing kids there. Also there is already rumors that some of the kids felt lied to now that they see the playing time they won’t get. Cal isnt loading up 10 deep with top end talent anymore. Billy G was a disaster from the start. I hope pope gets it going if not we will move on to someone else and start the process over. Why wouldn't he? Dukes coach is loading up on talent. Arkansas has been pretty damn stacked with talent.
But I was originally joking. In reality I don't want either. They are both turd sandwiches. I got to kid around some when ibhear Billy Gs name mentioned. I not going to bat for him in a serious manner.
Yeah - I think there is going to be a more evening distribution of these 5*'s across multiple schools with 5/5 here and less hoarding of the past with Duke, Cal.That seems to be what the smaller type schools have gone to now. Try to lock up 1 big name with a lot of the nil then supplement the rest of the roster with portal and retention.
I remember a Scalabrini interview when he "discovered" Flagg, he said his first calls were to Team USA and Duke. It was pretty obvious at that point where Duke stands in the world of CBB. That Coach K Dream Team year has gone a long way.Duke isn’t playing on the same level. They have team USA and lot of nba influence pushing kids there. If Pope thinks a player is a fit for the locker room and the court, go do whatever you can no matter how it looks. Players want money. We have money. Give it a shot and if you don't get him, go find other options. If you've followed the tracking on him, you'd know. This one is about as crystal clear as it gets that he's being used as NIL leverage. Sure, Pope can give it the old college try and throw a giant bag at him, but he's likely to take that bag right back to Cal. And then Pope has yet another swing and miss under his belt that will be streamed through social media.
On a very simplistic level that sounds great, but it also builds more and more social equity of being the price setting program. That is a really crummy image to have.If Pope thinks a player is a fit for the locker room and the court, go do whatever you can no matter how it looks. Players want money. We have money. Give it a shot and if you don't get him, go find other options.
The Chicago Sun Times article had Anthony Davis' father asking for $150,000 in exchange for his son's commitment.Cute? Players got paid yes..... they weren't getting paid millions. There weren't 22 million dollar rosters. Get real. A john wall back then might have gotten a couple hundred thousand and his mom a car or apartment...
They weren't making more than NBA players back then. Think we had a 6 million dollar player in Billy Gs time? Now that's cute. Really its kind of retarded.
I don't think anyone has more pressure to land CJ Rosser than Mike Malone.I believe it - they've been in on a number of top guys, and unlikely to get more than one so might as well go all in on one. Hodgson can sell. Very interesting. If they do get him, that means Malone has a ton on pressure on Rosser. Or he's going to be in on the biggest bag contest with Henry.
Exactly. Anthony freaking Davis only asking for $150,000. Case closed. The Chicago Sun Times article had Anthony Davis' father asking for $150,000 in exchange for his son's commitment.
It would seem his chances are good, as he can use the entire lot of NIL to get him at this point. I doubt Cal can get Black, Henry and Rosser, as that would be an enormous pile of NIL for freshmen. His class this year has a lot of frosh, but only Smith is in that top 3-4 area.I don't think anyone has more pressure to land CJ Rosser than Mike Malone.
That was long time ago when it wasn’t legal per se. Lot harder to funnel millions than couple hundred grand. Fact is they still was getting paid and mainly only basketball schools were doing it. So should’ve been easier to get good players.Exactly. Anthony freaking Davis only asking for $150,000. Case closed.
Yea team USA is run by Grant hill and the nba by a Duke grad. Also their GM is a former Nike person. It’s all set up for them.Yeah - I think there is going to be a more evening distribution of these 5*'s across multiple schools with 5/5 here and less hoarding of the past with Duke, Cal.
I remember a Scalabrini interview when he "discovered" Flagg, he said his first calls were to Team USA and Duke. It was pretty obvious at that point where Duke stands in the world of CBB. That Coach K Dream Team year has gone a long way.
No, Cal will get his 2-3 5* tops. He's either going to have to start rolling over kids to a second year or do more work in the portal. One thing I think he is doing is looking at the reclasses which he gets to keep for 2 years, as part of his refusal to play old kids. That may be his way out.
