I heard, read the Bert had a good team going, he had a very good transfer qb to step in, but even though they were avg ok at OSU last week which is a good thing sometimes, did they have a big let down today or do they have weaknesses. Is Purdue getting that much better?
Bert works hard at a place for 2-3 years, then gets fat (literally) and happy. He never sustains other than a bit longer than Wisconsin. He doesn't have the discipline.

Bret should never have hired Bobby Hauck to be his D coordinator. Bobby Hauck was a briefly retired FCS head coach who hadn't been a defensive coordinator since, wait for it...ever.

That's right, check Hauck's resume. He'd been a defensive position coach, special teams coordinator, and head coach. He'd never once been a D coordinator in his entire career prior to joining Illinois. Additionally, he hadn't coached above the mid-major level since being in role at Washington that ended in 2002 (forever ago).

Hauck was a solid FCS head coach in his two stints at Montana, and he nearly won it all there multiple times.

Hauck was never a good fit to be a FBS Power 4 D coordinator, and Bret was a fool for ever thinking it would work.

Good point - I have not watched them much, but was not impressed. Ped State was picked to finish 1 and the Illini were picked 4th in the BT….not happening!🤪

I'd like to see the so-called sports entity that picked PSU #1 and IL #4 preseason.

I pulled it off copilot…the source seems legit:

That said, the Cleveland.com poll is widely regarded as the closest thing to a consensus preseason Big Ten football poll because it has been conducted for many years and includes media members from across the conference. But it remains a media poll, not an official league ranking.

The Big 10 is elevating. Coaches, facilities, resources. Odum is a pretty good coach. His teams make major improvements in year 2 and 3

Rutgers is really the only program that’s going backwards. Maybe Maryland.

It’s why Iowa can’t afford to take a step backwards. Keep elevating.

Nice 2025 preseason poll.

What does Cleveland.com say about 2026?

Bert said himself before the season they didn't have the money to buy the D Line they needed. They lost out to other teams in their targets.

i suppose firing a coordinator randomly has an effect when game is played a few days later
I heard the guy basically walked out.

Regardless, another example of the importance of continuity, for those fans looking for coaching changes.

In this new age of roster turnover, I'm more heavily playing programs that have an edge in continuity, as a sports bettor.

Been working out great. And Purdue was another cash

Did he walk off the same way the CSU def.coordinator walked off? Lol. That is/was a crazy story

I would argue Iowa is taking a step back this year but could take two steps forward next year. UCLA, Wisconsin, Purdue, Northwestern and Nebraska have improved a lot.

Northwestern is really the only team that's appreciably improved. UCLA, Wisc, and Nebraska haven't beaten anyone of consequence yet. Purdue is still Purdue.

Lit's of parity is going on. Bert has also reached year 3+ in his current program which means fat, lazy, complacency ensues.

Wisconsin and Purdue have not
"Improved a lot". They just played bad teams.
Nah that’s easy (and lazy) to say but also shortsighted.

Purdue almost beat a damn good UCLa tewm
On the road. They won’t be a pushover in Kinnick. Their offense is better than Iowas.

Improvement doesn’t mean going 10-2.

And Illinois has definitely elevated under BB.

Yeah. They suck. Lost by 14 to UCLA, lost by 39 at home to ND, and lost to Wake Forest at home. They'll be 2-4 after they lose to the Goofers at home this weekend with their only wins coming against Indiana St and an Illinois team whose defensive coordinator walked away last week. Iowa will be at least a 10 point favorite in that game against the worst defense in the Big10. Might be the only game against P4 competition where Iowa breaks the 30 point mark this year.

lol you just proved my point. Wake is a borderline top 25 team. The point was improvement. Excusing wins is a lazy sports fans argument. Illinois might be favored against Iowa lol. Wake up.

Iowa doesn’t have the offense or the horses up front this year to overlook anyone.

What does this even mean? They haven't beaten a decent team. They're going to be 2-4 after this weekend. They have the worst defense in the conference statistically giving up more yards and points than anybody else. Iowa isn't great, and anything can happen, but Purdue is a bad team and Iowa will be a heavy double digit favorite going into that game.
