Would you still have your really great QB in at this point of 2:20 left in the game with a 17 point lead and having him pass and get clobbered by Eppy and one other hawk.

I wouldnt . Maybe he wants the offense to get more reps etc but wow.

That penalty before half got everything off schedule. It was huge.
Tackle not on the line of scrimmage killed a drive that would have resulted in 3 or 7 points and changed the whole game going into half. That’s a bs call that they used to kill all momentum. It’s never called and can be called any time on every team in college football.

I know you guys don’t believe me, but it’s hard to have an efficient running game when the opposition doesn’t respect your ability to throw the football.

This is a big part of why Iowa can’t run the football:
9H. Brown
12/2713201

There is no reason why a good defense would not commit to stopping the run when your aerial attack is virtually nonexistent.

It would have been a “punch in the gut” for Ohio State if their QB got hurt late in the game…just Sayin. 🥴

But the Iowa passing game has been much better than a few years ago. I think our OLine is just not getting much push etc in the run game

Most of those incompletions were to open receivers. I expected to see it against Michigan and was surprised at Hank's composure. Today looked more like he has historically.

Fans like myself were asking for it isu and at times vs Michigan to throw more on first. Today I felt like Lester had a concerted effort to open the run with the pass. And first half I felt like he made lot of good calls. Unfortunately Hank couldn’t make enough throws. Missed too many he should’ve made and unlike sayin did a few time when nothing was there tuck and run never got that from brown minus called draw play.

Hank missed big, and often, harder to catch today

I really didn’t think Ohio State was crashing that hard though at least not from their safety positions. It wasn’t like we were running into a stacked box.

But Iowa was passing the ball more and even had some successes early on and still couldn't run the ball worth a s**t. The OL and running game were supposed to be strengths coming into the season and they've been very underwhelming against P4 competition.
I thought Phillips looked better than the other backs , we did have one drive where we ran ok, but honestly, the entire Offense played like **** with the exception of 81 and 10

I remember safeties cheating up and flying to the football, but I have been wrong before. Ohio State is too skilled at every position to have to stack the box.

Regardless, I don’t believe the problems with the run game are due to a complete lack of talent in the backfield. I also question the effectiveness of Kirk’s zone blocking schemes, but I will be the first to admit offensive line play is not my area of expertise.

Yeah, the game has evolved enough, and it doesn't help that OSU has NFL head coaches working as coordinators and assistant coaches for their staff, that Kirk's sideline to sideline zone scheme doesn't work against top level talent/defenses anymore.

Their shift to more straightline, downhill blocking was a nice change of pace that forced teams to not be able to just shoot gaps and blow up the zone concept right off the snap, but for various reasons it hasn't been effective really at all this season.

We all also need to remember that prior to us having the "best OL in the country" last year, they were objectively straight dog sh** for the better part of the 3 years prior.

This year is just us regressing to the mean after losing our key seniors/NFL guys from last year's team.

So give it about another 3 years of patience and roster wish-fulfillment and our fat linemen should have it figured out once again! 😃😃😃

The problem with the run game has been detailed in the other run game thread.

And the usage of the most cutting-edge blocking scheme in the NFL is not the problem

But…but…all the Hawks need to do is run the ball MORE! More and more. And by November, the line will start to jell. They just need time. Of course, it will mean losing a few games in the meantime, but that’s not what’s important. Running the ball is what’s important. ;)😁

TBF, I think all 3 of our P4 games so far are the 3 best DL’s we’ll see all season. I’m expecting improvement starting this week off that alone.

The run game is definitely not going to be as good as it’s been the last 2 seasons though.

No way to tell whether these were the 3 best this early in the season, but what we do know is that Iowa struggled more than any of their other P4 opponents to run against them. It's just not an oline that's performing at a decent level from a run blocking perspective.
