Spurrier did the honorable thing, didnt stick us w a buyout

In hindsight, how honorable was it for Spurrier to clearly see the collapse was imminent, his time was up, and instead of dragging everyone thru a mess and hanging a buyout on us he just rode off into the sunset on his own, no late season questions of what was gonna happen, just ended it and let USC immediately begin making moves to replace him.

Not just us but A&M, FSU, SoCal, so many others with these absurd buyouts. Coaches who are already multi-millionaires should just take notes from the Ole Ball Coach: when you see that you arent the answer to the teams future, just part ways so everyone can start fresh.

No doubt the respectable thing would be for Shane to resign but we all know it ain't happening. He's never again in his life making the kind of money we're paying him so he's milking it for all it's worth.

It makes me wonder, not just here but other teams, why coaches who have made $20-$30M and are no longer wanted, why make it messy? Why hurt the team, after years of preaching to players and staff to never hurt the team? Urban Meyer did it too, he just walked away from Florida instead of letting it fall apart on his watch.

Spurrier had FU money....I doubt Beamer has Spurrier money to just give away, especially with a family and young kids.

Shane will probably inherit his dad's money one day but I doubt Frank has Steve's kind of dough. But yeah, Steve walked away like Lou because they didn't need the money. They'd already made tons of money in their careers-especially Spurrier.

How many here would walk away from $27M that was contractually owed to us?

A coach would really impress me if he signed a contract with no buyout at all. Of course, he would want the same rules to apply to the school. He could quit and go take another job and his new team wouldn't owe anyone anything. How many teams would agree to that contract?

I agree it was a classy move by Spurrier, but Spurrier did it to retire. If Beamer did that it probably puts him in breach of contract with his agent.

SOS should not have done it midseason. Of course, RT should not have talked him into staying when he was ready to leave as well.

'skins $$ as well. And Steve played 10 seasons in the NFL.
He got into coaching because he was looking for something else to do after pro ball.

Exactly. Spurrier should have gone down with the ship and retired after the season. He didn't want the stink of a losing record on him, so he bailed on his team. Nothing honorable about that.

I'd bet that when Beamer leaves, he will have earned more than spurrier over their respective careers. I'm sure spurrier's net worth will be higher because of time and other business investments, but money earned from coaching, I'd bet Beamer has that edge.

Why didn't I go into coaching. If I don't do a good job at work, I'm gone. I understand raises, but not buyouts... lucrative buyouts. Have a friend that applies for other jobs, interviews, gets the offer letter, then takes it back to the office and says "Can you match this?" Maybe one day they won't think she's worth it. She's won't be worried and the office would be in the same position as if they fired her....and even better without paying the severance package.
