Went to Shea Stadium to watch an exhibition game between the Jets and Kansas City (with Len Dawson). Rookie Joe Namath got to play in the 2nd half and threw a frozen rope way downfield to Don Maynard. He had a HOF arm before playing a regular season game in the AFL.
I wasnt comparing ability's Iam talking about his outside persona, Playboy, Out on the town, Fur Coats, wearing womens stockings, women hanging on him and following him, he was the first real player gaining notoriety with his off field activities along with his play on the field.

I recall you liked Baker Mayfield a lot. He was a four year college starter from a prodigious passing conference so I figured he would do well. Despite Baker's skills I liked Darnold's upside because he only had one season of HS QB (he was a LB at first). He ended-up filling in for an injured USC QB with little prep and still had a good rookie season. The next season defenses were gunning for him, and although not having a bad season the lack of polish showed.

The worst thing that could have happened to Darnold was going to the Jets (better at wrecking QBs than developing them). Eventually San Fran loved Darnold but they had a good QB so he was a back-up. No surprise he had a good season at Minn. I expect he will turn-out like Geno Smith, another Jet goof-up that blossomed later.
I did like Mayfield, and Darnold. I'm afraid that Dart is going to be the next Daniel Jones or Phil Simms. Next year is balloon passes to Nabers. Might be fun.

Agree with you there. My point was Namath could back up any extracurricular showmanship with otherworldly talent which was obvious before his first regular season started. Sanders has an extravagant lifestyle without the superior measurables of a Namath. Maybe even to the detriment of ever becoming a good-to-excellent NFL quarterback. Just makes sense that coaches and owners don't want a potential starting QB with a circus in his head and delusions of grandeur. It was written a couple years ago that Jalen Hurts was practically sleeping at the Eagles' football complex trying to master their system. You can walk in town with your entourage and bling, but you are not walking in as a starting quarterback who can really help the team. That requires a vast & elevated level of dedication and work.

Actually if you look a Broadway Joe's record , his talent really didn't make the Jets a great team except for 1968 ( maybe 69 as well) and most years were losing ones with a lot of INTs with the TDs he thrown .
His showmanship is what made him look great , even if injuries deraild his career, his stats wen't HOF material

Talent or stats considered, both Namath and Hurts have a ring. One can certainly make a case for being on the right team at the right time, though I would factor in both QBs participation as critical to each team's championship productivity. Sanders => TBD.

Namath was drafted 2 years before the first Super Bowl.
Players had real jobs in off-season so still a weak league.
Joe was one of the guys who got merger league on the top shelf.

It actually shocking how bad QB stats could be back then
At Bama Namath had (for 3 years) 25 TDs and 19 INTs with 54.3 percent

Namath was 11th for Heisman voting his senior year
The winner was ND's Johan Huarte who had 17 TDs and 11 INTs with 54.1%.

Huarte ended-up on the Jets with Namath and was 3rd string.
Sid Gilman was just inventing the modern passing game in early 60s so lots of ordinary stats.
Joe was calling his own plays with Jets

It would be a bad thing if he turned into Phil Simms?
I didn't phrase that well. I meant bad or good. (And now that I think of it, I like Jones more than most folks do. I fear he might make a comeback with a different team.)

Namath wasa 5-time pro bowler. Look at that over statistics as we are now used to QB stats that did not exist for QBs in his day. With his arm and the way QBs and receivers and the passing game is protected today he'd clean up.

Broadway Joe in his prime was one of the best.
And probably be the same today
But his stats might have kept him out of the HOF if the judging went by today's QB statistics.
During his era they were considered great.

Now you've gone and done it, you just set off the ashokan bat signal

I have little to say about Colorado now.
The "anonymous sources" have been wrong so many times the pebbles tossed in the pond aren't worth following.
Deion wasn't even supposed to be coaching now because all the "experts" said he would leave for NFL, more money etc.

Alas he has his two HOF brahs coaching with him, he has a new contract and commercials all over networks - he's rollin.
I expect he'll have a few more HOF coaches soon.
The worry with Deion is always his health (genetic clotting issues)

been wrong so many times? He's got in 2 years at Colorado and 5 total as a college head coach.. and now you can blame his health if he leaves coaching. I think you are cherry-picking as to what "anonymous sources" you choose to use as your strawmen.

With NIL and rosters always in flux, I have no idea is Sanders coaching can last or reach championship level. I don't see how anyone can be confident about the prospects of any coach who cannot promise a shot at a title or at least CFP. I suspect many top recruits will want to play for proven winners as they always have regardless of all the new recruiting angles/ In fact, such recruits who miss out on offers from such a team can now easily get another shot due to easy transfer rules.

Back in those days DBs could get away with murder. Defensive holding was almost never called so just getting off the line of scrimmage was a task in itself. Forget about going over the middle. Excellent chance that a receiver could be decapitated if he tried (and these weren't penalties). No such thing as a defenseless player.
Don Maynard and George Sauer got Joe into the HOF.

Seems like Deion Sanders is having some health problems and hasn't been with the team , recently, as he takes care of his health.
I wonder if he might decide, with his sons gone, to leave Colorado for health reasons because he eels he can't devote the time to coaching while his health isn't what it should be
>Colorado athletic trainer Lauren Askevold is in Texas with Sanders, according to USA Today. The school has not indicated whether Coach Prime would return to campus in time for upcoming football events this week, including a youth football camp and women's football clinic.<

If Deon is ill, he really should just step it back.
His health is more important than anything else.

Is trouble brewing in Boulder? They lost to both P4 opponents so far and Coach Prime is "dumbfounded".

Always thought Sanders would exit as soon as his sons were out and he ran into hard times. But he is an entertainer.. some football TV network will want him and it won't look like he failed. He has improved Colorado's profile with recruits. Look at Frnklin with PSU.. he was awful with his choices for assistants. His failures (by PSU standards) led to the PSU football organization hiring his assistants for him. They stil have him as teh face of PSU coaching.. but have competent coaching everywhere else. Colorado could probably do that but they don't have PSU's support structure.

Actually if you look a Broadway Joe's record , his talent really didn't make the Jets a great team except for 1968 ( maybe 69 as well) and most years were losing ones with a lot of INTs with the TDs he thrown .
His showmanship is what made him look great , even if injuries deraild his career, his stats wen't HOF material
...
It was a different age. Defenders could do a lot... so could receivers You cannot judge QBs from teh 60s and early 70s against current thought of what is a good QB..

Hall of Fame QBs from that era.. NFL-only TD/INT.. yes, Namath is upside-down.. but he got injured and switched teams.. he had some bad teams he was on. Archie Manning was an amazing QB on a poor team and was also upside-down.

Staubach 153 TD 109 INT
Griese 146 122
Unitas 290 253
Namath 76 116
Tarkenton 342 266
Bradshaw 212 210
Dawson 57 66

Namath was my guy but I loved Len Dawson. A true leader on the field whose stats don't show his value. You had to see him play to appreciate him. Him smoking a cigarette during half time of the Super Bowl is a priceless picture.
p.s. Is that a bottle of Fresca at his feet?

Could you imagine some of these guys if they played with today's rules for them and their WR's. Staubach/Bradshaw/Unitas would have insane numbers. Also imagine what a Marino, Montana or Fouts would have done.

1978 saw the "Mel Blount Rule: against bump and run coverage and brought about this age of "press coverage". So I do not think Fouts, Marino and Montana apply.. they already benefited from the change.

I mean the rules that do not even let a defender touch them or the receiver. Bump and run was a major change back then but the changes that have come since...I am not sure half the current QB's/WR's would have made it through a full season without changing the way they play.

Time to dust off this thread for anyone that thought Coach Prime was a great hire for the Buffs.

This about sums up his time in Colorado thus far.

Colorado won 9 games just two seasons ago with an exciting brand of football and had a guy win the Heisman.
Coach Prime isn't the second coming, but I know a career sub .500 coach who got 18 years of rope with mostly nothing to show for it.

I know you're not excusing Schiano's failures but context is everything. Sanders is in what... Year 4 at the P4 level?

Now watch the word is going to be that Schiano could’ve been successful anywhere else but Rutgers.

The warning signs were there the whole time with him don't let Travis Hunter carrying that team to 9 wins fool you.
