It really isn't all that different. They're good enough and well coached enough to beat the majority of teams they play, but never good enough to compete with the best who possess players that Iowa can only dream of acquiring.
So like pretty much everyone whos not regularly a top 15 team? You mean the teams spending twice what we do? Shocking.

Some of us really think we have a shot at winning a national title still? With the wild west of NiL and the transfer portal Iowa has absolutely zero shot. We will never be able to out pay OSU, Michigan, Oregon, PSU, etc. for the best players that money can buy. We’ve been able to beat some of those teams from time to time. But we will never consistently be able to compete with all of those teams on a year to year basis.

This is the new world of the NCAA that we have to come to terms with. And we are just one of many fan bases that have to. There’s some who think they belong like Texas A&M, but don’t. But we are not, and will never be, a blue blood in college football with the new world where money rules everything.

What is the point of my rant? Some people need to open their eyes up to reality of the world we live in. OSU had the best several players on the field today. I don’t know how far down the list you’d have to go before I’d say that the best Iowa guy on the team is better than a specific OSU guy. The game was a 17 point loss and on paper looking at the rosters it should have been much more than that.
Then I guess you won’t need to waste your time watching any more Hawkeye games.

No, I don't. For starters they won't be 10-2, and if they MIRACULOUSLY did that, they'd get boatraced in the first round. They have to be a LOT better then they have been for that to happen. Utah and West Virginia went up and down the field on the Clowns, in Ames. Iowa squeaks by in Iowa City. Sad.

It's the same pattern, year after year. Offense is mediocre, but this year the D-Line is as well. That's a problem when you have no pass rush, against teams with real QB''s and legit FBS passing games.

But then I've never felt Iowa was a bonafide CFP contender ever, mostly because their QB's are bad (Gronk was OK). National Championship level Defense and Special Teams on MULTIPLE occasions, and pure garbage for Offense. That ain't changing while Kirk is here, so better have some patience.
Well, I disagree and think that Iowa has a great shot of finishing at least 10-2. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

Lolol.. Except that's exactly where many here picked them before the season. 7-5 to 8-4. How exactly does that make them "less than we thought they were"? And they could very well finish better than that. No one left on our schedule is OSU, probably not even close to OSU.
Lolol.. Irrelevant what you thought before the season started. We're judging them from what we've seen on the field so far. Offense has regressed, week over week, excluding UNI. Defense showed promise with bending and not breaking, but poor tackling remains an issue, our secondary is suspect, and our DLine is not getting the pressure needed. No one compared anyone else on our schedule to OSU, but you'd be lying to yourself if you think NW, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska haven't looked improved. Iowa will be favored in maybe 2 of those games. Not to mention Washington and our West Coast Curse. The season is still very much alive, but it's going to be a brutal rock fight the rest of the way due to the inexperience and talent ceiling of this team.

I apologize for hijacking this thread, but let's be honest here and try to be objective about today's game (I know biased opinion is hard to remove). Iowa was not going to beat the bucks. It's funny a week ago Iowa fans were elated and celebrating the win against Michigan. Now reality has hit....HARD. Iowa is 4-1. Michigan is 3-2. The remaining teams your team has to play is "cupcake" compared to Michigan's. If you look at Michigan's schedule, you will agree I'm 100% correct. Our schedule is NFL level compared to yours.

You guys sure love to talk the talk but can't walk the walk.

Team needed it. Iowa State is a bad team and we struggled. Michigan's offense is mediocre and we made them look top 10 in the country. This team is a lot less than we thought they were going into the season. I'm starting to think 7-5 is definitely on the table.
7-5. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 That's absolutely ridiculous!

Wipe the sad puppy dog look off your face and get over yourself.

Go Hawks!

100% predictable that all the people who said they would be thrilled to win 1 out of the first 3 league games, would be freaking out if Iowa lost today

Enjoy the loss, glad that it's still rent free in your mind a week later. Also, enjoy your loss to Minnesota. And here I thought you guys said that you were playoff bound?

Not sure 10-2 gets them on now, they won’t have a big win because Michigan looks like butt.

11-1 gets it done.
I’m guessing one of Minnesota, Wisconsin, NW or Nebraska will end up looking good by the end of the season but I’m not sure even 10-2 will be enough.

At 10-2, style points will likely matter.

Good…then you can save time not having to watch anymore Iowa games this season.
I’ve saved a lot of time over the past few years not force watching our games. I’ll watch when I’m available, but I’ve missed a lot of full or partial games for softball games or scout campouts with my kids the past several years. I know people that skip their kids’ events to go to games, and that is not me.

This is supposed to be entertainment for us and some people treat it like life or death. The playing field used to be privately unfair with deals under tables. Now the unbalanced nature is sanctioned by the NCAA. It just isn’t worth the stress worrying about games against teams like OSU or Oregon. Spend your time worrying against the rival game that we mostly have level playing fields with.

Exactly, if Iowa wins 2 of 3 with the least snaps returning in p4, and the second lowest nil in the BIG, it’s a masterful job.

but I wouldn’t say they **** their pants. They played to their potential, they just aren’t on the same level as the elite billion dollar rosters.
Wouldn't say that played to their potential. You can't have as many mistakes that they had against a good team and expect to win.

Unfortunately today was alot of problems. The 1st series with a false start after a decent gain then the fumble. The def didn't play great besides on the blitz. Personally would of liked to see more blitz.
Hank wasn't great. Wr dropped some passes. Didn't run enough in the 1st half (especially the 2nd and 3rd and 2). Then the 1st down but called off bc of the false start again. Iowa gets at least 3 there and probably runs the half out instead osu scores a td.
1st half could of possibly been a Iowa lead but generally not something a typical Iowa team does shooting itself in the foot. But that is part of the game.
Even though osu was playing prevent and left the under open when Heck came in his passes (at least this game) did look better then Hank.
Stopped them on blitz packages and went away from it and they drive right down and score before halftime.

You are correct at least statistically with the logic of buying players. The laws of college football means the teams with the best players usually win.

I just hope that when the CFPlayoffs go to 16 or 24 teams there are still a lot of nice bowl games for the rest of the eligible teams to go to. I would hate to see this be the demise of bowl games for the 6, 7, and 8 win teams, even a lot of 9 win teams. I think a 16 team CFP is fine but I dont like adding another week to the CFP schedule going to 24 teams and another week of games to pare it down to 16.

Not sure about Wisconsin. But we will see.

It’s strange. This Iowa team feels like they can be really good but they’re trying to figure a million things out on the fly.

Wash game will be. HUGE.
Yeah, if they can beat Wash and be 5-1 at the bye that is what a fan's 2nd best record would be at that time. It will be good if they hawks can run for 150+ against Wash.

Then work on that run game blocking over the 14 days of the bye. That would be great.
