ESPNs Bill Connelly on Sellers....this is what I've been saying

On his evaluation and ranking of Sellers so far this season, he said: "He might as well go back to hunting big plays, damn the consequences, because this approach has little upside."

Sellers just isn't a great triggerman. If we had a good passer at QB, I think this offense would be humming. Sellers still has value at the role, in my opinion, but it hinges on him regaining that nasty 2024 mindset. The guy who lowered his shoulder and plowed over an A&M defender.

So, if everyone across america can see this, why hasn't the backup been given a real chance?

I don't buy that we wont sit Sellers because of NIL. Maybe thats just incredulity if its actually happening.

Whenever I see a starter struggle like this, and the backup NOT get used, I immediately start to wonder if the backup is really as good as I think he is.

I mean, can two separate OC staffs not see enough in him to trade him out, even shirt term, during some meaningful time?

It's the same Beamer loyalty mentality that kept failing assistant coaches on our sidelines when they obviously need to be replaced!

I suppose. If so, Id like to be a fly on the wall in those offensive meetings. The staff cant be trapped by that same loyalty, and are surely debating him on it.

I don't think anyone really knows how good the back up is, including the coaches. As far as last year's staff is concerned, I would assume the primary reason to not try anyone else is because Sellers is more mobile than anyone else they had. I say that while knowing he stood in the pocket way too long at times and took sacks he should not have, but we also know that there often wasn't even a thing called the pocket.

So my assumption for 2025 is, the coaches' impression was - we need his mobility. Here' something that isn't an assumption: coaches, across all levels and all sports have a tendency to get a thought in their mind - right or wrong - about what a player/role should look like on their team. In the event they are wrong, there's probably a majority of them that will not have their mind changed for very unclear reasons. I don't know if there is any other profession that will not divert from a formula that is not working for fear of something else not working like coaching.

Regarding this year's staff, who knows. From the OC's perspective I could see a case where he thinks he hasn't seen enough to make a change. But the HC has seen plenty imo, none of this should be news to him and he's not making a change.

I think it's mainly loyalty by Beamer, which I appreciate to an extent. Sellers had the world at his feet after 2024 and could have gone to any number of programs for a great deal of money, but he chose to stay. Not for free, of course. But I have no doubts he could have gotten a much larger payday elsewhere.

I think there's a place for loyalty instead of a "well, you're no longer useful to me so I don't need you" mentality. It has its limits, though. Beamer has given Sellers plenty of loyalty, I think. It can be a double edge sword. I think when other players see that kind of loyalty, it makes them more loyal to the coach and school. But if you're loyal to the demise of the team, loyalty can become favoritism, which breeds resentment and discord.

But, also, I think Sellers athleticism is so tantalizing. You just keep thinking maybe he's only a play away from breaking loose and doing something big to regain his 2024 form. His play has been rough, but he mixes in just enough of his athletic plays or a big throw to keep you on the hook.

And, thirdly, maybe Woods hasn't been all that good in practice.

So if you play Woods and he preforms a little better than Sellers then what? Do you stay with Woods or rotate back to Sellers. Or play both. I guess we will find out tomorrow if it goes south for Sellers.

Tomorrow is do or die for Beamer. Winning tomorrow may not save his job. But losing guarantees he's done. It'll be interesting to see how long of a leash Sellers has when Beamer is coaching for his job.

I don't think Woods is better than Sellers. If he was, he would have played more. Beamer knows his a** is on a white hot seat and I don't think he would let loyalty to Sellers cost him his job. Sellers might be gone after this season, I have wondered if he might stay for the NIL money since his draft stock has dropped so much. I have a hard time seeing Beamer stake his job on loyalty to a player who could be gone in three months.

I don't know why so many people are so high on Woods. I haven't seen anything from him that makes him stand out as some sort of savior.

Play Woods and if he does well that becomes a motivator for Sellers to up his game.
Rotation can be a good thing - keeps the opposition off balance as well.
Remember the Allen Mitchell/Mike Hold rotation worked well for us in the past!

I've never been high on him mainly b/c I've never seen him play. But if Sellers continues playing like he has been, I see no harm in putting Cutter in for a couple series. We are at the "nothing to lose stage"

Unless Sellers returns to the form of 24's last few games, he needs to be somewhere else next year.

He needs a reboot under a different staff.

And would we be foolish enough to sink even more NIL money into a guy hoping he goes back to what he was like 3 years ago?

There is a big difference in putting him in for a couple of series, even more than a couple, and making a complete change at QB.

As I pointed out in a post earlier about Woods, he wasn't recruited by any other SEC team and was a three star prospect. It isn't like Beamer is letting Arch Manning sit on the bench.

I don't know anyone really want a wholesale change. But, in the Bama game for instance, we were getting vaporized. There was no reason not to give Cutter a couple series and see what happened.

IMHO, probably because they've concluded that Sellers is just that bad..... anybody has to be better, and I'm not sure that they're wrong. I mean, when Sellers isn't air mailing it over someone's head or throwing interceptions, he's either running and fumbling, or running straight for the sidelines. But, to his credit, at least he doesn't appear to be running backwards and out of bounds anymore. He also seems to have very little awareness of the game going on around him. Time, distance, score, etc...

Didn't Connor Mitch quit because he was too scared to play SEC football?

I only ask because I think Sellers has been very cautious since the concussion.

Nice debates, but everyone knows exactly what will occur at the qb position tomorrow. There is not a coach in America not named Beamer that would start Sellers.

because shane beamer is totally enamored with Sellers and has made him the face of his program. If Sellers struggles tomorrow and I expect him to do so, if Beamer does not play Woods where he can have a chance to help, then Beamer absolutely deserves to be fired if we lose, no question to me.

I agree, I expect Sellers to make costly mistakes and turnovers.

I think our receivers are a big part of the problem. I mean we got supposedly one the fastest in college and he can’t get separation.

I think the national pundits got to the boy's head and he thinks he's great, he's just not....let's get some other players going in the Briles offense.... he has made every QB he's worked with great and what are they like two and three stars

According to this article Woods will replace Sellers if he struggles today, no indication if Sellers will have to give Woods some of his NIL cash if he is replaced as the starter.
There should be consequences when you don't play well...here at USC you can suck and talk back to coaches and still play
