Iowa and PSU not signing up for tough non-conference duals OR tournaments is infuriating.

Only thing fans could do to show discontent is not show up.

This sucks.

I don’t know. The last few years, I have watched many of our guys wrestle “non-conference” matches all over the world and we are always the most represented in qualifying events against the best guys the US has to offer. Feels pretty tough to me.

Kinda weird. Two tickets for four Rec Hall matches cost $316 or $39.50 per ticket, more than double last year's price. Three BJC duals cost is $200 for a pair of ticketsfor each match or $33.33 per ticket. I'm totally confused.
I think I figured it out. Someone in ticketing flipped the total cost of the Rec Hall and BJC matches. If that is true, the four Rec Hall matches at $200 for a two ticket package would have an average ticket price of $25, a reasonable increase of about $5 per ticket ($5.75 actually) from last season's pricing. The three BJC matches at $316 total for 6 tickets would come out to an average of $52.67, pretty close to last season's $56.67. I've contacted them and am waiting for their response.

I believe at this point Cael just trolling everyone that complains our schedule is weak.

Reporter..”Cael, are you doing Nationals Duals this year in Stillwater?”

Cael “Um, no we have a really good schedule. We like the journeyman event and how it’s formatted. They do a really good job.”

Reporter “I see you wrestling the 3 worst teams at that event. Is that something that went into the decision?”

Cael “Oregon States coach beat Askren twice, PJ wanted us to wrestle Duke since they have same name and Binghamton is a top 75 program”

Reporter “NDI is loaded with top teams. No interest in testing the boys?”

Cael “We’re going to Oklahoma. They will fill the stands and it will be a fun dual”

Reporter “But, But..”

Cael “you coming to our opener?”

Reporter “Bloomsburg? No that’s going to be a blood bath”

Cael “match count is important, need to make sure our guys get the matches for RPI, rankings etc”

Reporter “ Yes I know Cael but this could be the weakest non conference schedule I’ve ever seen”

Cael “we hosting all star classic, our whole team invited”

Reporter “I give up”
Pish, that's a great post.

Or, when the invoices went out, only 2 BJC matches were scheduled. Something changed, and now the original invoices are nonsensical.

We'll let you in in a little secret here. PSU Wrestling, that is Cael's program, has transcended NCAA wrestling. You can blame Cael if you'd like but the reality is that the rest of the sport hasn't been able to keep up.

About 12 or 13 years ago Jimmy Carlson asked Cael where he was going today find a starter at heavyweight. Cael responded that if he wanted a starter he could walk across the street to West Halls and find a starter. He wasn't looking for starters he was looking for guys that want to be National and World champs.

Now, if you've been paying attention, he doesn't even mention National Champs any more. He's looking for Wold Champs.

Your whining may be better served on other programs urging them to get better.

Nah. I'm still right in what I'm saying. Especially when it comes to duals.

I get that Cael basically freaked out after National Duals/Suriano - but that was such a freak accident, no way something like that happens again. (non-contact injury)

Is Cael doing the right thing for himself/winning chips? Sure. But I'd say he'd have the same results if he added even 2 better duals. I get not going to Vegas/Midlands/Scuffle/tough tournaments.

But a DUAL???? WE TALKING ABOUT A DUAL???!!!

Sorry pal, you're clueless. I get it though, we all love duals. Unfortunately we haven't found any to be competitive in years. You'll keep whining about the wrong problem though.

If Taylor had loaded up 6 kids and brought them to the All Star classic with some sort of verbal gesture about maybe we can host this next year and Cael can bring half his team and we can go back and forth until we match up 10 on 10, we might get to see the match everybody wants to see.

Taylor not making an appearance at the all star event at Penn State is not speeding up the development of that match up.

I wouldn't mind us seeing Virginia Tech in a non conference dual, probably moreso than Oky State.
Just my opinion, but right now in this moment it is Okie State, Nebraska and Virginia Tech stepping up to meet the PSU/Cael challenge. This year and the next several I would love to see those 4 schools wrestle a dual against each other.

Hell, just to hurt Iowa's feelings - have all 4 wrestle a round robin dual through November and December and call it the National Dual Pool championship.

I don’t get the angst over the schedule, outside of Okie State and VaTech who is out there that can possibly win more than one match?

last year psu wrestled #7 Stanford and shut them out

Outside of top 5 funny enough WVU presents the “toughest” non con challenge because wrestle stat predicts Ty Watters beats Kasak

Ok, WVU, and Lehigh are 15th/16/17.

It's a very valid complaint. The matches prior to NCAAs aren't free.
If you’re attending, I’m assuming you are a fan of the team. Seeing the team you root for win should be worthy of the price of admission.

You’re correct, same group that’s been complaining about not facing Oklahoma State since Taylor got there. Outside of the two teams you mentioned and Iowa state, is there any other team that would take more than a match in a dual?

Outside of Okie and Ohio State, no team is projected to win more than one match on wrestlestat.

VaTech only Bo is projected to win but obviously they could win more

There’s no tough non con when you are PSU. But yes, if you think they should wrestle Okie and/or VTech that’s valid. But cut to the chase, you aren’t clamoring for Missouri, Stanford, and Pitt for higher ranked teams we’d beat 105-3

@vhsalum I think Cael's beef with National Duals is with people's desire to change the team championship to a duals tournament. I have the same issue with it as well.

@LostInTransition & @Atrain83 True, we haven't had many competitive duals lately. You want to know a sure fire way to prevent competitive duals? Keep scheduling a lot of Bloomsburgs, North Dakota States, Binghamptons, Riders, Sacred Hearts, and Buffalos. I don't think it is too much to ask for more than one top 20 caliber non-con opponent each year.

It's not that binary and you know it.

What could (again) be the greatest team of all time is wrestling DUKE. A team with no scholarships.

So yes, outside of Oklahoma State there are teams outside of the Big Ten that would be a better challenge for Cael than this schedule.

The people complaining the most wouldn’t be happy if they scheduled Missouri and Cornell. It’s all about Oklahoma State and to a lesser degree Va Tech. We all know by now that the way DT left here fractured his relationship with Cael. That dual isn’t going to happen so you’ll have to wait for the tournament to see those matchups.

It would be amazing if Cornell were on the schedule. But seriously, this schedule is absolute buns. I GET that its on purpose and no, the okiest aint ever happening as long as Cael is HC. And I know and get the why. I'm good with it.

People don't remember who won duals, they remember National Champions. Cael never takes his eyes off the prize. How did the National Duals work out for Ohio State when the real National Tournament happened? Cael delivers titles that matter. In Cael we trust until it stops working. The wanna be programs can piss and moan all they want to along with their fans.

People with any sense know that it’s not about comparing Missouri and Cornell to Oklahoma State or Virginia Tech, it’s comparing Missouri and Cornell to Sacred Heart and Buffalo.

It's kind of sad that Penn State only wrestles cupcakes like Duke, Binghamton and Iowa.

It's also kind of sad that there's been a conflict with Iran as they are probably the only team that would have a puncher's chance against Penn State unless you count Penn State's backups.
He's got a point. If you want to see the two best teams go against each other, go to the Black Knight Open.

PSU is projected to beat Cornell 37-0.

There’s really not much for people to complain about, the stretch of OK/LEH/WVU is just as tough to PSU as some collection of Missouri, Stanford, and Iowa State would be.

I don’t care that they are wrestling Duke, the National Duals got moved to prior weekend so that probably eliminated the possibility of getting someone like a Stanford like they did last year. Just so we are on same page, they aren’t scared to schedule someone of that quality..

Be interesting to see how many guys miss Army because of the All star classic which is at penn st and not long after Army
Also interesting if Lilledahl and Blaze take some time off after world championships (U23 and SR).

As a fan I wish CKLV, Midlands and the Scuffle were as strong as they were 10 years ago. The Scuffle used to have so much talent on display with Oklahoma State, Cornell, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, etc.. but all teams seem to be avoiding big matchups in the traditional opens these days. I miss Dean vs Ruth, Taylor vs Dake, Nolf vs Green, Nico vs Nahshon, and so many others.

Agree with guys doing worlds and u23 not sure if they will go early . CKLV now takes a hit with NDI now we are left with 4 watered down events with CKLV, Scuffle , Midlands and Salute when we would get 3 good ones in the past CKLV Midlands Scuffle. I don't see it changing anytime soon unfortunately. Wrestling needs to admit it's a 2nd semester sport and make the change

Having the depth they have should encourage a tougher schedule. Could even win national duals with a 2-match individual cap.

But it’s whatever. They are non-revenue program, so they owe nothing to the fans. Go on with your dogass schedule and keep operating as the football charity that you are. Just don’t ask me to donate or be happy about it.

They are purposely abstaining from National Duals which will speed up its failure. Iowa and Nebraska already bailed, and Maryland and Rutgers took their place lol

My guess is that they probably do a home and home with VATech in near future. Outside of them and Okie State no program would be projected to win more than one match, and only a few wouldn’t be shutout. So who exactly should we be wrestling?

I haven’t seen any info on who’s been invited to wrestle at the All Star Classic but I assume there will be a few Nittany Lions participating. If those guys do then skip the Black Knight Invite it will give those of us going the chance to see Penn State’s #2 and #3 wrestlers go at it in the finals.

I think a lot of people forget, we aren't friendly with Cornell either. Koll non-stop complained about us (can't get over losing 2011 and also losing Max Dean, he's also salty that Cael tried to recruit Yianni even after he committed it appears) Grey's wife non-stop complains about us and accuses us of cheating, their peanut gallery spent years talking s*** about one of the PSU's most beloved wrestlers Zain. I'm sure Dake coming here doesn't help either.

Yeah, it would make a ton of sense. Oklahoma State would also! But if Cael doesn't like you, you aren't getting a dual.
