I wonder if Coach Cambell should have focused on keeping last year's roster together...

Bring in Becht (familiarity) and some top transfers not half the Iowa State roster. What do I know? Still a season left to play, 1 loss never depresses me more, for that matter any of them.

In reality, Krafty The Clown probably should have just let Smith do that - sign him to a short-term incentive based contract and see what happens while PSU kept its powder dry. Instead, good 'ole Krafty The Clown signs Campbell to a massive L/T guaranteed contract and Campbell proceeds to shell out large sums for the roster via the Free Agency market. Now PSU is in a horrendous position (lightyears worse than we were last year at the time Krafty The Clown fired Franklin) and it is only going to be worse if Congress passes the Save College Sports bill because it will no longer be an Absolute and Unrestricted Free Agency marketplace. There will still be a Free Agent market, but it will be significantly limited as outside of HS recruits.... Grad Students will still be unlimited (and athletes in programs with coaching changes), but other than that, it will be significantly more difficult to bring new talent in. Krafty The Clown has really screwed the pooch and sadly, "the pouch" in this instance, is PSU.

And you base this on a single loss by 4 points in a Big 10 game in which PSU never was behind until 1:12 left in the game. This is just unbelievable. You do realize that this PSU team, whether it was coached by the previous coach or Chesney or anybody else, never was going to be a NC contender in 2026, as it wasn't in 2025?

Do you also realize that Paterno, even in the great 70s and 80s, actually lost some games, including home games, like in 1977 against Kentucky that kept PSU from playing for the NC, or Bama in 1981 that also may have kept PSU from playing for the NC, or to mediocre Pitt teams in 1984 and 1988, and those PSU teams were much better than this current PSU team?

Let me break some news to you. Even if the previous coach had been retained, he was going to lose several games this season, just like Campbell is going to do. If the 2024 OSU team, which won the NC, could lose at home to a 8-5 Michigan team, this PSU team is capable to losing to probably any Big 10 team.

To an Opponent that was 2-7 in b1g road games the prior 2 years (5-13 overall in b1g play in those two years and 9-15 season record in those 2 years). Acting like this was an acceptable loss to a bad b1g team @Home is funny. Is this Pat Kraft?

Friday's game vs Northwestern is very important, but I've already lowered my expectations .

I suspect the following:

1) The highly corrupt B1G desires NW to win at their new Ryan Field.

2) There will be uncalled "holding at will" penalties by the dinged NW OL resulting in "impactful plays" by NW.

3) Dirty tackling by NW's defense resulting in a few PSU injuries. In the course of tackling an opponent, the NW team has been instructed to wrap up and land on an opponent's legs...twisting on their lower legs in the course. Their opponents have quizzically suffered many lower leg injuries 🤷‍♀️

4) Inopportune and phantom holding calls on PSU as we near NW's 10 yd line.

Last Saturday, the penalties were totally lopsided in PSU’s favor.

I am sure this has already been discussed, but just wanted to point out something

2025
A favored PSU team loses to UCLA the following game is vs. Northwestern and they lose and CJF gets fired
Phillies lose a play off game the end up out of the playoffs soon thereafter
Eagles lose their game that week they lose the game the following week

2026
A favored PSU team loses to Wisconsin the following game is vs. Northwestern and.....
Phillies lose a play off game what will happen???
Eagles lose their game that week what will happen????

Yes, - this game is very important for Campbell....

Teams are permitted to get better. Looking at Wisconsin's prior year's results and expecting similar performance, in this age of player movement, is not persuasive.

Wisconsin is not a top 20 team and the loss was unexpected and disheartening. But I would be careful ranking it up there with other huge upsets.
It's early in the season to assess where we are. It is certainly evident PSU lacks high end talent. I am interested in seeing the next 4-5 games to form any judgment about whether this coaching staff is capable of winning games they are not expected to win. That would be a sign of progress.

Like Varsity Blues. PSU will refuse to play the 2nd half unless Campbell steps aside. Injured Max Granville takes over as coach and PSU comes back to win.

You kidding me? As soon as this year’s schedule came out before you guys got Franklin fired, this year was expected to be a Playoff run. We knew as soon as the schedule came out it was the easiest Big Ten schedule we could draw. And our QB situation would have been at least as good, if not better than it is now.

Joe might have had a couple of bad games against quality opponents, but he was playing with true student athletes, and ended up with two undisputed National Championships and five undefeated seasons.

Saturday was a horrendously and pathetically played game by BOTH teams with paid professionals on both sides that did everything possible to lose. If not for the turnovers by Joseph, that game wouldn’t have been close in the 4th quarter. We would have gotten smoked.

WOW!!! Coming up with excuses already before the game even starts. Against Northwestern of all teams.

At least we don’t have to just keep making excuses up for Ohio State and Michigan anymore. What a relief!!!!🙂

Well, then maybe PSU just isn't a good team this season, so form your expectations accordingly. Before the season, I thought that we'd finish 8-4 and 9-3 if a lot of things went right.

I think it was a little late for that, given the hiring process.

That said, another question is in this age re new coach hirings. Are the players he has access to (on his current team, and those he has verbals from) as important as the X's and O's of the coach to an impatient fan base?

Cig somehow turned this around 180 degrees w/ JMU kids no one wanted, but I think he will prove to be an outlier.

Signing Day 2025 = December 4, 2025
Matt Campbell Hire Date = December 8, 2025

The reason why there are so many ISU players on the roster instead of just a select few is rooted in the above dates. With hardly any recruiting class, the transfer portal was no longer a luxury to address deficiencies, but rather was a necessary mechanism to simply fill out a roster.

Yes, it's unfathomable that some still don't understand that, and any coach that PSU would've hired probably would've brought a large number of his players with him.

Comical. The date you list is the "early signing period" for HS recuits (i.e., first day of signing period) but the Deadline for HS Recruit Signing (i.e., National Signing Day) is still Feb 3. There were lots of unsigned players still available but PSU's class being blown up has way more to do with the timing of Krafty The Clown's firing, than anything else. Secondly, Campbell did not have to waste & burn his NIL budget on players at QB, TE, RB.... etc.... in many instances, his large NIL payments to these ISU X-Fers defacto chased off holdover players at those positions. NIL is not an annual "use it or lose it" proposition. Campbell could have chosen to keep his financial powder dry for this year (including HS Recruits) and gone with a lower budget roster this year with more holdovers. Last Saturday would have been more acceptable had that been the case. But that was not the case, virtually 100% of Campbell's largest $$$ X-Fer Free Agents have been busts - as in super nova busts. Sorry, but you can't have spent the kind of $$$ Campbell has on Free Agents with zero accountability for your decisions when you're pushing holdovers out with many of the decisions and it wasn't necessary to spend that kind of $$$ as we likely weren't making the playoffs this year anyway. The amount of $$$ he has spent on Free Agents is egregious relative to what they have shown - which is nothing almost across the board.

Which guys from last years roster should they have kept that would make a difference? Grunk and Gilliam for sure. Chaz Coleman was posing for photos next to Lane’s Bentley. We weren’t keeping him and we weren’t outbidding TN and Indiana for Campbell, Gilliam, Lane and AJ Harris.

Grunk wasn't staying--this had nothing to do with familiarity. This has to do with having to put a roster together without time to do so

Not necessarily disagreeing with some of your subsequent points, and in fact I was highlighting the TIMING similar to you, but the bolded part in the excerpt above is factually incorrect. Exceptions always exist, but the majority of highly rated players (3-star to 5-star players) were signed in the referenced "Early" Signing Period (and most "committed" verbally long before that).

Amen to that. None of these ISU players were here last season when PSU lost six Big 10 games in a row, and I have a feeling that if several of them were, PSU wouldn't have lost all six of those games.

He brought us the best players he could on both sides of the ball. Look at the pedigree of players he would amass year after year…he got us to within a play of the championship. First of all you’re an idiot if you don’t recognize that as an example of “success” and you’re of even lesser intellect if you see that happening again anytime soon. We were Penn State-now we can be Nebraska. That’s what you wanted right?

If it’s because you expected PSU to be as successful as we were under Joe Paterno, well your expectations are just sorely off. Do you think we are closer to a championship now or further?

And if you disagree that we are closer than further…why?

Is Virginia Tech on a path to win a National Championship before us?

Right now…which stadium delivers a more electric experience? The only thing that looked worse than the team on Saturday was the fans.

List all the big games BGJ won . He wasn't fired for no reason. He won what he should have. Otherwise, he was just an average phart looking for more and more money.
