KF is 9-9 vs Mich; 11-9 vs Penn St; 10-9 vs Mich St; a very good record

Us older fans remember the Big 2 and Little 8 of the old Big Ten. Mich was one of those 2 teams, and Penn St has been a top team for 60 years, and Mich St has a long ago natty championship and a very good football history when they have the right coaches.

And KF's record against those teams is very good. Even record vs mighty Michigan and winning records against MSU and Joe Pa's Lions. I think this is a top part of Kirk's legacy. Also he has taken care of NEbby big time and most of the other Big Ten teams.

As fans we have some problems with his coaching ideas/conservatism but we can't have problems with his record against the big boys minus Ohio St (which most teams have trouble with).

KF has kept Fry's standing in the Big 10 intact with Iowa being a top 4 team in the league.

Who hasn't taken care of Nebbie over the last 10 years? They've been a bottom feeder over that timeframe.

Agree with the rest, although I think realistically as an overall program over the last 10 years Iowa is probably 6th or 7th behind OSU, Michigan, PSU, Indiana, and Oregon. Those teams have more talent and have won Big10 championships, national championships, or at a minimum qualified to compete for national championships. That's the next step for Iowa. Hopefully this is the year that happens.

I meant top 4 or #4 in the Big Ten in Kirk's whole tenure. I gave his overall record against these teams not the last 10 years.Leave out his first two years and Oregon is so new. Indiana?? Yeah the last two years otherwise Indiana has been very strong over the past 25 years minus Cignetti. The previous time they came to Kinnick around 2022 ranked about #11 the hawks smoked them which was the downfall of that coach and led to Cignetti so IU fans should thank the hawks!!! :)

And the last 10 years has been a very good steady run of Iowa football putting them in the top 10 or 15 teams in the country in overall great success.

Don't tell people that.

They've tried to make themselves believe Iowa can't beat good teams because they had to fight through a patch of bad luck and weren't "entertaining" enough.

Fan support, errrrrr......consumerism at it's best

The addition of the left coast teams is a new scenario for everyone, and one nobody had to deal with until the last couple of years. Indiana was dirt until two years ago so putting them in some kind of historical conversation, (which is what I think this was) is off base. We've played them once in the "Cignetti era" and played them to a 15-20 loss. I believe their closest win in their championship season.

I was only responding to OP's last statement of "KF has kept Fry's standing in the Big 10 intact with Iowa being a top 4 team in the league". That statement infers the situation as of this moment.

I won't argue that the league isn't more difficult today than it was before the west coast teams arrived or Indiana ascended because it is. I was simply stating that Iowa probably isn't a top 4 program in the league.

Counter balance that with a 2-10 record against OSU. They’re his kryptonite. Clear example being that 2009 season where he turtled up and played for OT instead of taking a chance with the ball late in the 4th.

But yes, he has done well against some teams with better history than us. His biggest drawback is that for every 2002 where he beats PSU and Michigan in the same season there’s a 2017 where we destroy #6 OSU then follow that up with losses to Wisconsin and Purdue the following weeks. That season also had a loss to NW. Or 2016 where he beat #2 Michigan but had losses to NW and NDSU earlier that year. 2015 was the only year where he didn’t have one of those hair pulling losses, but he didn’t play OSU, PSU, Michigan, or MSU in the regular season. The best win was at Wisconsin.

What is Ohio State's payroll versus Iowa's? And make no mistake it is just above board now unlike the old days

That's fine. I took his comment as Kirks record against teams during his tenure and therefore Iowa's standing over that time period.

Kryptonite? Really? That would infer that the two programs are, or have EVER been on equal footing in the last 50 years. So Is OSU EVERY other team in the conference Kryponite? Care to do a study oh how many B1G coaches have a winning % better 20% against OSU over the last 30 years? And lets not count coaches who have played OSU once or twice in that time period.

Coach has been great overall for 27 years.
To be fair though, a few teams he has not done well enough with:
ISU
Northwestern
Purdue
Directional michigan
NDSU
Purdue
There will always be a few hiccups against those teams except for directional Michigan but I think he’s only lost one of those. He’s even money against some of the heavy hitters. How could anyone possibly complain about this at Iowa? We don’t have the high school talent in Iowa to recruit here like other states, NIL money is low, and have to split fan support with Iowa State. He’s one of the best to ever do it.

Easily would be one of the top coaches you'd want to plinko-land onto any random campus to build a program

Oh for sure, KF does not have a stellar winning record in games where Iowa is favored. As much as KF can propel his squads as underdogs he emits a fear of conservative tightness as a favorite. You are right. Some years back I totaled up all the games where the hawks have stumbled against what seemed to be lesser teams where Iowa was a favorite. At that time I found probably 18-20 games where Iowa just played tight and coughed it up, like the ISU loss in Kinnick in 2014.

KF has 27 seasons done and I bet he could have 27 more victories and 27 less losses on his resume. Sure HOFer then. How many times do you remember Iowa not being able to get a first down to ice a victory and then losing? wow a bunch and I was at Evanston to see a big give a way to jNW when Tate was qb.

Unless this season and next tank he'll be well within the boundaries for the HOF. It would be interesting to see a list of all the coaches who haven't lost a few handfuls of games they were "favored to win" after they have coached for 30 years. Just saying, its interesting the standard he's held too and I'd bet if you applied that to everyone it wouldn't be much different or far worse. Other then schools like OSU, etc...

So your saying he's lost at least one game like that every year? I'd love to see that broken down, and not games where were favored by 3, and its basically a toss up pick em game. Your also assuming that coaches should win every game their favored in, "27 more victories, and 27 less losses"? Really......

Since when does Kryptonite infer previous equal footing? What I’m saying is that as well as Kirk has done against Michigan and PSU, he basically hasn’t had anything resembling success against OSU. Yes, almost no Iowa coach ever has, but most Iowa coaches haven’t had the same success against Michigan and PSU that Kirk has had. So it is almost an anomaly that he hasn’t won a few more against OSU in almost 30 seasons.

Someone else said something about OSU’s payroll. I agree with that which is one of the reasons I’ve stopped worrying about Iowa beating those schools anymore. Iowa should not have come close to beating Michigan last weekend when looking at the amount of money spent on players. It has really taken the joy out of watching games, except for the extreme situation where we pull off a miracle like Saturday night.

My point has been that KF's conservative nature seems to keep him and the team from sometimes putting teams away. Of course, your not going to win all those 27 but or so but they could have won most of them. Northern Ill in 2014, games like that

As a fan, I hate to see the hawks lose when they are a good team by not playing well or whatever at JNW and Minn in the 2010 season. Central Mich in 2012 losing at home iirc and then turning around and winning at Mich St the next game or so.

I was at the 2005 game at Evanston and the hawks had been whipping teams that season, they just lost an OT game at Mich, and were ahead of jNW 24-7 at halftime that day. Then in the second half they called a bland game and they didnt start really playing again until jNW got close. Man that was a bad 6 hour drive home.

Sorry, you seem to remember the games we lost that we were favored. Again if many of these other coaches worked at one or numerous schools over 30 years, are you saying you wouldn't see others with even worse records as favorites. Hell, EVERY week several teams lose as favorites. There were multiple (probably a 1/2 dozen at least) games in the B1G alone last week where the dog won. Many of the road dogs won just last Saturday in conference play. NW took Indiana to the mat last week, and barely lost. I think other then the top 10 teams, there is way more parity in college football today then ever. Yes Kirks lost some games to some directional schools that he probably shouldn't have. Two seasons ago N Illinois beat 5th ranked Notre Dame on their own field 16-14. Should that define Freeman as a coach? If teams don't rise up on any given week and beat a team they had no business beating, how do you explain Iowa beating OSU by 30 points as a 21 point dog the last time we played in Kinnick in 2017? That may be one of the largest point swings from the original line to the actual score in B1G history. A 50 point swing from the original line. How does that happen?

KF has beaten the spread, as a favorite, at Iowa to the tune of 52.4%. So there's that.

That's almost exactly break even vs 10% juice.

Overall, KF is 53.4% ATS at Iowa.

Instead of taking the time to complain, people could have used it to bet on Iowa every single game that KF's been there. He would have made them all money
