Does he get more than 4 games or is the experiment over? lolFranklin also had us one play from the title game the year before.... so if MC gets there and then he can lose games like this

Sadly this isn't just a PSU problem, go on any message board or talk to fans of various teams across the country and most are bat s**t crazy. I always told my Bama buddies that they would turn on Saban the first year he went 9-3, lol.Lots of us recognize the history and legacy of this program. That doesn't mean didly squat when the ball is kicked off.
Unrealistic expectations are at the core of how PSU judges its coaches. It's easy to over react when fans are fed a steady diet of fluff pieces about offices, shoe strings, culture, fit, football alumni, blue color, nice guy, finding diamonds in the rough, coaching them up....brilliant game management, we're gonna be the most physical team in America. People here swallowed it whole.
Football is a competitive sport. Your opponent works hard at winning too. All that other stuff keeps people employed.
We deserve better?
Kraft deserves credit for placing a bullseye on Campbell before he ever came here.
PSU is currently 6th in the conference (or 7th) in NIL money and recruiting is about the same. If Campbell wins 9 or 10 games this year, he's a good coach. I'm concerned that if he doesn't (and I've been screaming all summer) the recruiting and the portal talent won't improve and the schedule gets real.
lol the UCLA loss last year was one of the worse losses in Penn State football history if not the worst. Especially with the talent difference across the board and UCLA fired all coaches after losing to three Ivy League quality teams. Follow that up with home loss to northwestern.Small game Matt. Franklin couldn't beat Ohio State, Campbell can't beat Wisconsin!!! Franklin never lost to Wisconsin btw.
Oh Matt Campbell is a better in-game coach than James Franklin. He BLEW a 17-point lead AT HOME to an unranked 10-point underdog!!!! And he's nowhere near the recruiter Franklin is. Enjoy being Iowa State!! You spoiled Penn State fans deserve every loss!!!
You weren't happy with the second winningest coach in Penn State football history.......noooooo. Enjoy mediocrity!!!! Spoiled Penn State fans deserve every loss!!!!
The issue last season was expectations, many had PSU #1 in the country coming into the season and the coach himself said this was the most talented team he's ever had, throw in issues in big games over the yrs and trouble with your boss (AD) and you get the decision(Firing) you get. If MC struggles in yr one, so be it, it's yr one, not 12.lol the UCLA loss last year was one of the worse losses in Penn State football history if not the worst. BWIACC always whines, its what we do.The lack of class and respect on this board with respect to a rebuild team that lost a fair amount of talent after 1 freaking loss is appalling. CMC will do well and has recognized the history and legacy of this program. Cut him and our players a break and quit your whining. Seems like too many of you never heard the word No growing up or haven’t learned how to cope when things go wrong.

Probably more than you and me think. This is exactly the issue! How many of “our” ISU players would Indiana or Ohio S have even taken a cursory look at much less signed? If Campbell did not have personal relationship with his guys would they have been the players he targeted to rebuild PSU? There is a reason those guys were playing at ISU and not OSU. Reality is ISU was a mid tier Big 12 team under Campbell, and now the core of that team is the core at PSU.
"But, but but.... IOWA STATE BEAT IOWA!!!!! Dammit!!!!!"Campbell's fault is not game coaching. It is recruiting. Our team is currently Iowa State east. Since Iowa State plays in an inferior conference they get inferior players which we now have. You can't win in the Big Ten with Iowa State players. We are going to have to flush out the Iowa State players and then see how we do with Campbell's Big 10 recruits. We may do well. Remember that Joe went 5-5 in his first year. We are headed to 7-5 this year with the inferior Iowa State players. If we finish better than that, then Campbell is doing a great job with inferior talent.
Oregon, Indiana, OSU, ND??? Or Rutgres, Purdue, NW??Probably more than you and me think.
I know they said Becht was pretty sought after in the portal.![]()
Got me. just going off of what I pay for and read.Oregon, Indiana, OSU, ND??? Or Rutgres, Purdue, NW??
Absolutely right on the money. That ucla loss was just terrible.lol the UCLA loss last year was one of the worse losses in Penn State football history if not the worst. Especially with the talent difference across the board and UCLA fired all coaches after losing to three Ivy League quality teams. Follow that up with home loss to northwestern.
The thing about that Northwestern game last year was the lack of discipline especially on defense.. There were several personal foul penalties in the first half on 3rd down that extended NW drives that they eventually scored. The defense had them stopped and committed the penalties. Kept NW in the game with the subsequent results.Absolutely right on the money. That ucla loss was just terrible.
Hell Neuheisal didn’t even call half the plays because he didn’t know how to work the headset. lol. Franklin though standing there with his arms crossed. lol.
Why does anyone care if Pitt beats VT. Does that solve the problems with PSU football? Franklin's won 4 games. How many did VT win last year? If Campbell gets to 8 wins will the BWICAC celebrate. When Pitt beats VT on Friday, I guess it will be because VT has a bunch of overrated and underachieving ex PSU players who contributed to a great 7-6 season in 2025, including a glorious 3-6 Big 10 record. Guess what, most of those players weren’t great Big 10 caliber players either or, if they were, then they were coached terribly..
worst fanbase? we're at least in the runningPersonally, I find a rush by some of our fanbase to slap a moniker like this on our new coach so quickly far more embarrassing than Saturday’s loss.
Is this who we want to be?
Franklin’s family were directly harassed last year.
Now we’re nicknaming our new coach after his first loss. Classy.
Let’s say Campbell ultimately DOESN’T work out. Who would want to come coach for a bunch of @ssholes like we’re being?
smfh
Between his VT contract and PSU buyout, Franklin will be guaranteed an average of 10 million per year for the next 5 years. Imagine how much he'd be making if he knew as much as some of us?Absolutely right on the money. That ucla loss was just terrible.
Hell Neuheisal didn’t even call half the plays because he didn’t know how to work the headset. lol. Franklin though standing there with his arms crossed. lol.
A lot of truth. But consider this. 2026 is a schedule which allows PSU to avoid Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon and Iowa. Every conference team on PSU'S schedule will have 3 losses and If PSU beats them at least 4. This opportunity will never come again. 2027 and 28 schedule is n actual Big 10 schedule and recruiting isn't improving. How long will PSU wait for results better than under Franklin? The issue last season was expectations, many had PSU #1 in the country coming into the season and the coach himself said this was the most talented team he's ever had, throw in issues in big games over the yrs and trouble with your boss (AD) and you get the decision(Firing) you get. Thank you for your input Mrs Franklin but your son deserved to be sh$$ canned. And sh$$ canned earlier than he was as in after the 2021 season. What kind of coach does not have the second string QB even remotely prepared to play??Small game Matt. Franklin couldn't beat Ohio State, Campbell can't beat Wisconsin!!! Franklin never lost to Wisconsin btw.

A valid opinion. We are only less than a week from tales of impact players brought from ISU who could play anywhere and as evidence their rivalry wins vs Iowa. Matt Campbell was hailed as a coaching savant that was a better human, a better talent evaluator, fashioned brief but more productive practices, wore the right color shoe laces, made nothing but brilliant in game decisions and didn't need to recruit elite talent because he saw promise where no one else in America could and no matter because of this coaching staff's unparalleled ability to "coach em up!" After the defeat of mighty Marshall we memorialized this momentous victory with a "The play the defines the Matt Campbell era," thread. Anyone who disagreed could not and could never have been a PSU football fan. On ignore you go!Campbell's fault is not game coaching. It is recruiting. Our team is currently Iowa State east. That's a little dramatic Marshall , but funny. Most relatively sane people, which excludes most of us, didn't have National Championship hopes. Why? The depletion of the roster and totally lost recruiting class. That was a disaster of epic proportions. It was handled poorly. I do agree with your assessment for the future. Matt Campbell must show some forward direction in the program to entice kids, but we need the NIL to bring it to fuitiuon. This is where are beloved AD comes into play, which is a concern of its own. I like Matt Campbell. I think he is genuine. I hope this can translate to positive results on the field. I know hope is not a game plan, but Campbell's past history may give him a chance to succeed and make us competitive. Franklin had us competive, but he was like Sisyfiss(spelling). He would almost get the team to the top, but fail as the rock would tumble to the bottom. Every coach and team makes mistakes. The coach and team that lost madet the last mistake. It typically is a collaborative effort.A valid opinion. We are only less than a week from tales of impact players brought from ISU who could play anywhere and as evidence their rivalry wins vs Iowa. This is over reaction central. But chin up, if PSU should administer a decisive defeat of Northwestern, we'll be back in the saddle and the faithful will assert that PSU simply tripped and it's trajectory is Indiana like.

Fair enough, I also think that by observation from a distance, Matt Campbell seems to be a nice guy. That means nothing in terms of his charge to do better than Franklin. That's a little dramatic Marshall , but funny. To be clear, I didn't have NC hopes for this year. However, given the schedule 10 or 11 wins seemed attainable. Even that would likely place PSU as the 5th best team in the conference. That's a little dramatic Marshall , but funny. I try to be pragmatic about any coach's first year. I think it is difficult to go from one conference to another, getting comfortable, etc etc. Cael Sanderson, Cignetti are exceptions. I believe it was year 3 when Saban started to hit his stride at Alabama. Utah under Wittingham blew them out in a bowl game. The rest is history. Let us see if Campbell and team can put that game behind them, learn from it, and play harder and improve to the point where they can win the game. Each week is different, each game is different. To be clear, I didn't have NC hopes for this year. However, given the schedule 10 or 11 wins seemed attainable. If Campbell wins 8 games, we will hang him in effigy here. The only way you avoid a BWICAC penalty is to go 16-0 and win every game by 40 points but we still get to complain about media availability at practices, the atrocious stadium audio/music and gameday traffic. Those three are sacrosanct. Now, if you go 15-1, we talk about the 1, not the 15, talk about 2 and not 14 and so on.Why does anyone care if Pitt beats VT. Does that solve the problems with PSU football? Franklin's won 4 games. How many did VT win last year? If Campbell gets to 8 wins will the BWICAC celebrate.
I don't think the former AD at VT fired Pry and promised excellence at the highest level.
As for being coached terribly are you indicting Franklin or Smith, because Terry was the coach for 6 games.
If Franklin loses every game at VT, does that make Campbell a great coach?
I am honored. Thank you! It's a pleasure to put idiots like you on ignore.
Bob. I thought I would put my PSU education to work and pull out a really big world to impress youse guys.I am honored. Thank you!
No third grade humor here even though that maybe our true level. I meant to say word.Bob. I thought I would put my PSU education to work and pull out a really big word to impress youse guys.
This year without Franklin would have been the same. It was always going to be a rebuilding year. You mean after 10 out of 10 winning non-covid seasons with a trip to the National Semi-Finals the year before?? Losing to two teams by a grand total of six freakin points with a 3,000 mile, four time zone road trip thrown into the mix???
You’re kidding, right???
Campbell is playing with an Iowa State All Star team with full scholarship limits and enhanced redshirt benefits. James started under scholarship sanctions and ended the 2014 season with a Pinstripe Bowl win playing with 41 scholarship players after injuries and redshirts.
As soon as this schedule came out before James was fired, most felt this season was set up to be an easy Playoff run. Now, even you admitted in another post we will probably lose to Northwestern on Friday. We just freaking blew up an 11 year Program rebuild.
Congratulations on booing and “FIRE FRANKLIN” chanting your way back to square one.
This might be the dumbest thing I've read hereI think why so many of us are upset, is because we witnessed a "lack of class and respect" given to JF who arguably did more that anyone in the history of PSU football to reach our ceiling. JF was booed out of State College and the AD joined in the fan club and fired him after TWO bad weeks of football. That is not classy nor respectful. This is just my point of view.

In light of our NIL situation, and in light of this coaching staff’s approach to talent evaluation and recruiting process, I’m not entirely sure where the big turnaround will come from for this program. If you listen to what Campbell says, any major turnaround won’t likely come from the portal—which I’m fine with, but you need more victories on the recruiting trail with 4-star prospects.
There are many times I checked into this forum after a loss or sometimes when PSU missed on a blue chip recruit and wrote, "the sky is falling." Well, I'm not being sarcastic this time. The sky is falling. 7-5 at best and 6-6 more likely, this is far worse than anyone could imagine. Pat Kraft must be held responsible. It's now clear that the man for this job was Bob Chesney. An issue is that Campbell doesn’t have the resume to attract top talent. He may be a great coach, but he hasn’t won enough and hasn’t won on a big stage. This season could have, should have helped him. He needs the wins. I don’t know that he has the charisma of a Franklin to help with recruiting.
