then why do we have refs? If thats a penalty in the first quarter it's a penalty in the 4th.
It was a penalty (on #31) and it was correctly called.

4:28 mark of the video.

I swear, the less someone knows about the rules, the more adamant they are about illustrating it.

OPI (before the ball is thrown) would require the receiver to run AT the DB, and initiate contact to either block him or knock him in one direction or another
FWIW, Wisconsin was called for one of those earlier - when a WR engaged in a block on a pass to a teammate - on what was a very iffy call against Wisconsin. You can legally do that - block - once the pass is touched by the receiver - which was very very close.

In any event, here the receiver is running his route - both the receiver and the DB are inside the hashes.
As he approaches the DB, the receiver breaks outside (well outside the hashes - which make it clear and easy to see).
At that point, he has the right to run his route. The DB CANNOT jump in front of him and impede his route (that is, as termed in the rulebook, defensive holding. It is really "impeding", but the term used is "holding")
You can't - as a DB - do that. You have to turn and run with him, but not jump out and impede his route, And this one isn't even a close call,

The receiver did what he should - and since he was so much bigger, he trucked him (and later stiff-armed the second DB to the ground. Pretty impressive actually).

Flag for defensive "holding" on #31, correctly called, and it wasn't even close.

Trying to blame the loss on this call is embarrassing. Please stop.
I never said the loss was on this play but if you don’t read prior posts where I said it should t even come down to this well that’s not my problem. You are a real pissant aren’t you?

This is going to be a brutal season. The more I’m thinking about it…there is no way they’re beating Northwestern. Not after what we just saw, and what we saw from Northwestern vs Colorado and Indiana. I wouldn’t rule out a blowout win for the Wildcats.
My hope is they rebound and they coach to win. Enough with the long bombs on offense because Becht doesn't have the arm strength. Peoples needs to be RB1, Hansen RB2, and the offensive line needs to get some nasty attitude in the run game. Defensive ends need to find some pass rush mojo. If NW is able to isolate Neal (safety) one-on-one in pass covetage, PSU will be in trouble. Offense needs sustainable drives so the defense has something in the tank for 4th quarter.

PSU might be best served by sitting #31 down for most of the game.

NW QB is not much of a run threat, and they shouldn't need an extra defender in the box (they better not, or they are in trouble). #31 really is of little to no use vs the pass game (and a big liability if ever he should be matched up in coverage)- and since that is how NW will have to try to beat PSU, why have him out there?

You make good points, but Campbell needs to flatten the brim of his cap before we can begin to think of winning in the b1g.

For those that get a chance to watch it, I thought Campbell and Mouse were really good in front of the media today. No defensiveness, they didn't try to humiliate the reporters or undermine their questions(and yes, there were tough questions asked). They didn't run from anything. Admitted they didn't put the players in the best position to succeed. Explained and took responsibility for poor decisions on the part of the coaching staff. It's all gonna come down to wins and losses, as it should in this pay to play semi-pro league, but it was refreshing to have coaches that were introspective and honest. Like everyone here, I'm as mad as a hornet about that game on Saturday, but I can also say that I like this staff and I do hope they can get it turned around. If humility is a part of success journey, these guys certainly have it.

Well at least we got that..... we only paid up a couple mil to get it, so there's value there...... On a less sarcastic note, I will say I like your post better than the moronic posters that act like Kraft and Campbell and his Free Agents are doing PSU some type of favor by being here and we're being "rude" to them..... The reality is that all of them are being paid massive sums of PSU's finite resources and there has to be accountability that comes with that for the outcomes of those investments, which at this point in time appears to a massive downgrade in competitiveness relative to where PSU was at before Krafty The Clown decided he was going to use his PSU position for his personal vendetta against Franklin - PSU's best interests be damned.

Agree. In fact, during much of the criticism of Franklin and players, even pre-NIL, I always defended the fans right to say whatever the f*ck they want. Sure, there are lines to not cross(personal/family), but the whole reason Coaches come here, and really the luster of this job is that you get paid handsome sums of money to live up to the expectations of the fans. For those that think the mission is different, how else do you afford the salaries and the stadium upgrades? I never thought it "unfair" to boo the "kids" but especially with NIL. If youre gonna charge a guy $2500 for tickets for his family, forget the profligate parking and concession fees or the hotels raking him over the coals, he can......say whatever he wants about the program....sorry. That said, based on how Campbell addressed the media today, I don't think he disagrees or is running from that.

I have no problem with Campbell - he seems like a stand-up guy. I would expect that he realizes some of his decisions regarding personnel and game coaching didn't turn out so well and he isn't going to get a free pass if this continues. It is Kraft that deserves to be fired - he is at the center of this whole debacle and he is being paid a lot of money to make what was clearly a bad and irresponsible decision regarding PSU's Professional Football Team last year (compounded by a series of clown-show, amateur-hour statements in the months that followed. Kraft has done massive L/T damage to PSU's franchise and has burned massive amounts of finite resources in the process (which includes the large sums of money he is paid to make such decisions - our return on investment for what Kraft is paid is negative to the tune of tens of millions of dollars)). The fact that this empty-suit idiot still has a job is embarrassing PSU, my Alma Mater, not his - so I'll say whatever I damn well please.

I don't think Campbell should be fired, but I assume a new AD would likely put him on a very short-leash as to what the expectations are going to be on a "move forward" basis.

Yeah, I just don’t think the talent is there.

And you know what…? I know we all liked to get hyped and hopeful before a new season. I’m right there every year. But what could we honestly expect when we plugged all these Iowa State players into the starting lineup?

Did any of them choose Iowa State over a B1G school? No. I think Campbell will probably prove to be better at player development than Franklin was (arguably the thing CJF was worst at), but these former Cyclones kids just cannot hack it in this conference. And that shouldn’t be surprising to anyone. It’s a different level of competition over here.

It sure is a different level of competititon in the Big 10 this season, when Duke wins at Iliinois, Miss State crushes Minnesota at Minnesota, Wake wins at Purdue, UMass wins at Rutgers, VT beats Maryland, Michigan has a de facto loss at home to Western Michigan, and ND crushes Wisconsin and beats MSU.

Also, all of these former ISU players were good enough to have a lead over a Big 10 team for basically the whole game until 1:12 to go in the fourth quarter.

Okay, but please tell me what Campbell was able to do differently when he only got here in the middle of December to fill a roster? Should he have raided Coastal Carolina or Old Dominion or Duquesne or Robert Morris for players? You act like he had a bunch of time and options to stack a roster when he didn't.

If Chesney had been named coach, then a lot of the PSU roster would be made up of JMU players, which maybe you would've preferred.

He didn't have to sign players like Becht and Hansen (or multiple defensive players that have not been an upgrade) to large Free Agent contracts when he could have just kept his powder dry. So he had no choice but to waste PSU's finite resources and chase PSU holdovers off in the process??? If you say so, you must be Krafty The Clowns best friend, Mother.... or something.

They played WISCONSIN.

Wisconsin

If that level of talent overwhelmed them - or even overly challenged them - that is an issue far beyond the conference pissing contests.

There is not a team on the schedule - with possible exceptions of Michigan and USC - that have any significant level of talent above a typical Big 12 team.

Run Threat = threat in the RUN game in this case (when you are looking at defensive personnel choices - and whether you want a safety whose value is strictly as an in the box aid to the run game - like #31 - vs a competent cover guy)

He is not a significant threat in the run game.
And he had one 10+ yard run vs IU - and a couple 5,6ish yard runs .

If there is a concern about him scrambling, all the more reason to get an athletic mobile open-field guy in there, instead of #31.

FWIW: I really like Chiles. Said so earlier in his career as well - really think MSU screwed that situation up (and having a crap team around him didn't help, for sure). He's playing really well for NW

Most of those programs are not the stronger ones in the conference, but point taken.

Still— you look at the line play on both sides of the ball. The QB play. The revolving door of “meh” RBs… what conclusion are we left to draw?

It is, for a certain, a very down year for the conference. We had to expect this from Michigan. Their program is a shambles right now. And yeah, lesser teams have dumped to… even lesser teams. But Wisconsin was not good, and our offense basically managed to kick 2 field goals against them.

Sure, no problem: Drew Allar, Sean Clifford, Nick Singleton. Allar and Singleton actually got worse over their careers at Penn State, while Clifford never markedly improved. Allar and Singleton were both 5-star recruits. How do you come in with that kind of pedigree and basically go to sleep?

They also went into last season with a senior-laden O-line that was widely expected to be the envy of all of College Football, and they… weren’t.

I'm just going to disagree. He's put a lot guys in the NFL, more than we have in the past 20+ years (pre 2014).
And really you take a 12 year career of most coaches and teams you can play the same games.

I also agree that the way the situation was going, whether it was Franklin or Pat (I think more Pat) was becoming toxic and both weren't going to be able to co-exist. So I get it but I have serious issues as to how it played out.
My biggest issue with Franklin is, I don't think he was as good at building his staff as others do. The ones he brought from Vandy were well fro Vandy...hello John Donovan. But he did hit out of the park for a few years but then just crapped the bed with WR coaches, a RB coach (not a fan of last years) and the last 2 DC and everyone of his OC's, save JOmo and I really think that was more the talent he had to work with.

I think it's one of those plays that depends on who you are rooting for. The defenders right hand is on the TE left shoulder ...Ill advised technique IMO when the receiver has a massive size and strength advantage and could be interpreted as a hold. It would be helpful to know what the coverage was as well. The catch didn't necessarily guarantee a 70+ yard TD.

BGJ did a decent recruiting job especially for diamonds in the rough but not in the vain of an OSU MI or OR. I didn't see them grow all that much either. To BGJ defense he didn't have the best assistant coaches in key spots and it was a revolving door too.

At this point it's hard to say anything too positive or negative about Campbell and Crew. This whole thing from the AD down is a work in progress.

Right now, and to include what I would describe as a botched search and hiring process some warts are being uncovered.

1. Becht played how I feared he would play after seeing his panic and poor decision-making early against Temple. You can't be that experienced and that scared/frazzled.

2. We should be 17 point underdogs to NW, conservatively. We're laughable 2.5 pt faves right now. For the degens amongst us, this should be easy money.

Yeah, that’s absolutely a fair take. It is difficult to judge, especially given how erratic the rest of the conference has been this year.

if they bounce back against Northwestern, that will go a long way toward restoring optimism. On the other hand, a loss to NW puts us firmly on track for a repeat of last season. And with the program already struggling to put butts in seats, and draw the attention of legitimate sponsors… well…

Hopefully they beat Northwestern.

I could absolutely see this team, winning - still - 9 or 10.
Obviously, what we see on Friday will go a long way to showing how realistic that is.
[FWIW, contrary to the casual opinion, NW still sucks. If you actually watched their games, the overall lack of talent was obvious - but they were wearing their lucky socks, horseshoes, and had four leaf clovers shoved into their jocks in their last few games. The Fightin' Deions completely wetting the bed didn't hurt either. Doesn't mean PSU will roll over them - not the way they played last week, for sure. NW probably has a bit more overall talent than Wiscy - especially at QB, where their guy - despite being brutally inconsistent - has a lot more talent than the joker for Wisky. But PSU should win]

But based on the first month, the schedule is even weaker than what one would have expected - and everyone knew it was going to be very weak even before the season started.

But, as incredibly weak as the schedule is, PSU is going to have to develop to the point where at least a few of the position areas on the team are strong. Right now, aside from a guy here or there, that hasn't happened.
Could be a LOT of close one-score games, and games that are still in doubt into the 4th quarter (much like last week). From that standpoint, it could be a very interesting season.

A loss to NW would be devastating. At that point we would have all the appearances of a bottom dweller.

I could absolutely see this team, winning - still - 9 or 10.
Obviously, what we see on Friday will go a long way to showing how realistic that is.

We seriously lack talent in key areas on both sides of the ball. Never a good thing. You can only do so much to scheme around and coverup your weaknesses.

That didn't take long g. One big10 game and I know Franklin is the better coach.

Just keep telling yourselves that Campbell has a better record vs top 10.

You are right, we lack talent in some areas but don't dismiss the loss of Howard. I think we beat Wisky with him playing. He is a legitimate B10 #1 and looks like he will be drafted. With him on the field it opens up our passing game and spreads out the defense. He makes Becht's job easier and will help our run game by occupying safeties.

Becht can't be as bad as he showed on Saturday. Brahmer and Sowell have talent. Granted, RB is very average.

Defensive line is an issue. That will dog us all season, no penetration or pass rush. LBs average but Rojas can cover up some issues.

Not a great team but there is talent to beat a lot of the teams on our schedule. Right now after that Wisky loss it didn't and still doesn't look good and you can and I did make an argument we are a 5 or 6 loss B10 team but I am not buying it... yet. Banking on improvement starting with NW.

In 2018, PSU lost 3 Big 10 games, in 2020 they lost 5 Big 10 games, in 2021 they again lost 5 Big 10 games, and in 2025 they lost a whopping 6 Big 10 games with an o-lineman who was a No. 1 draft pick, a qb who was a No. 3 draft pick, and two running backs and a d-end who made NFL rosters. All of those teams mostly were coached by the previous coach and he was responsible for the talent procurement, and not all of those losses were only to Michigan and OSU.

I wonder if any VT fans will say the same thing about the previous PSU coach if he loses to Pitt on Friday night, which is extremely possible and maybe even likely, as a lot of PSU fans are saying about Campbell after one loss.

1. Don’t care about Virginia Tech or Pitt
2. Depends if his offense doesn’t look like it ever played football before
