Sterling 27 – Hammond Morton (IN) 20 : This was a good game between two evenly matched teams. Morton has quite a few talented kids and was able to execute on offense...but the Sterling defense got 5 fourth down stops. One thing that killed both teams was the penalties. Both teams had big plays brought back due to holding calls. Sterling was able to get one last big stop on defense to end the game and move on to 5-1.

Quincy 45 – UT 41: This game looked like it was going to be all Quincy. After UT scored on it’s first drive, Quincy would reel off 28 straight points to make a commanding 28-7 lead in the 3rd. UT would come storming back, helped by a 3 and out and an interception, to tie the game in the early 4th quarter 28-28. For the last 11 minutes of the game, the teams would trade scores until with 1:16 left, UT held a 41-38 lead. Quincy though would drive right down the field and score the winning touchdown with 25 seconds left. UT’s last second hail mary would fall to the ground.

Geneseo 58 – Galesburg 23: Galesburg took the opening off and drove for 6 minutes and had to settle for 3 points. Geneseo needed just under 2 minutes to respond with a touchdown. Galesburg would turn the ball over the next two possessions and the flood gates opened. Galesburg would start to climb back into the game, but at the half it was 37-17. In the second half, Geneseo continued to grind out yards and points on offense and would launch the running clock at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

Moline 35 – Rock Island 21: Moline would use the passing game and trickery to pull ahead and stay ahead of rival Rock Island. Moline QB Kasen Ponder would toss 3 TD pass, catch another one, and rush for one. Moline would go into half time up 21-7 after Rocky came up one yard short at the end of the half from getting in the end zone. In the second half, both teams would trade scores, but Rocky would never get closer than 14 points down.

Respect to Hammond Morton. Damn good 2-4 football team. Do they play better ball in Indiana?
that was a fun game to watch! Lots of action!

Not to be overly cynical here, but it's feeling like a quick exit year for the WB6 in the "That one time we expanded the playoffs" postseason...

Do you care to elaborate? Why does the expanded playoffs have anything to do with WB6 post season?
Oh you know, because at this point the WB6 will get 6 teams in possibly. Does that happen every year? If it does, I do apologize, Warrior. I shall bow and kiss thy feets.

Moline, inconsistent, overhyped preseason
Quincy, a farce... clearly. Overrated literally every year they have an above .500 record. 7A is tough, we get it, but you have 2000 kids in your school, no one cares.
East Moline, improved, but gives us as much on D as they score on O most the time.
Geneseo, love em, but they don't win the big ones come playoff time anymore, and this year they won't either.
Sterling... I should probably not touch this one, you already know this isn't the team, Warrior. Mad respect to you though, sir.
Galesburg, the north has never been kind.

Tootles, good sir. Best of luck this week against the Mini Pack...

Yeah, I’ll say Moline, Quincy, and even UT that play in 7A will probably only win one game at the most. Sterling and Geneseo have better chances playing in the smaller divisions so I don’t think your characterization of the entire WB 6 takes an early out is totally accurate. Especially with 7 or 8 wins in the regular season. but yeah, probably not the year to make a deep run for Sterling, but they will play their hearts out and lots coming back next year!

What is the deepest a WB6 team has gone in the playoffs recently? I know Quincy got beat in the 3rd round by Mt. Carmel and St. Rita in '23 and '24 and Geneseo got to the 3rd round last year. I know in the early 2000s Alleman made it to the title game in 2005 and Rocky had some deep runs in either the 90s or 80s? I feel like the WB6 as a whole doesn't usually make noise in the playoffs. Am I wrong on that?

Geneseo was in the title game in 2009 and 2013.

Technically, weren't they a part of the NCIC/NIB 12 at that point? Not that it means anything I guess. But I have wondered if the WB6 conference has had enough to get teams ready for playoff football.

Sterling, while not in the WB6 at the time, went to the 5A semis in 2017 and 2018, and 5A quarters in 2016 and 2022 (when they WERE in the WB6)
As a former Ottawa Pirate player and Dixon Duke coach, Sterling was always a pain. Only a few down years in my time IIRC but they are always a tough team no matter what. Lots of respect for the program even if it isn't winning state championships every few years.

Maybe, possibly. We shall see come week 10! Luckily some fun football still left to be played.
I agree, and the expanded playoffs does create, maybe, some off-chute paths for deeper(ish) runs for the handful that will likely get in for the conference.

I'm being overly cynical of QHS... they just aren't what they've been the past few years imo. I know they have athletes galore as any 7A program should but Rick Little, imo, hasn't tapped into their potential just yet. And their defense is shaky to me. Too many cupcakes early got those boys inflated and then UT/Moline kind of spun them back around. Will be interesting to see come week 10 for the Devils.

If anyone, I agree with Warrior, it could be Moline, Sterling, or Geneseo if any who make the quarters or beyond...

Anything is possible, I do believe... so I won't knock the confidence at this point, Swansa... appreciate you always talking WB6... fun league I've always followed by default since the Pagans on the hill across town are members. 😁

And I appreciate the conversation! And I agree on the "pagans", they had it pretty easy starting out. It will be really telling week 8 and week 9 when they have to play Sterling and Geneseo.

Indeed... I had forgotten in the moment they still have both to play... could expose a lot if Sterling and Geneseo keep getting better.

I forgot as well. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this game as always. Great rivalry.
As for Quincy, I was wondering how the two CPL cupcakes would have affected them. They played Moline tough for a bit but as we all saw, when Moline wants to run, they are hard to stop. Even the really good recent Quincy teams had a hard time defensively, just those teams had an offensive group that put games out of reach making teams one dimensional.

This year's offensive group is still young so it will be interesting to see what they do next year.

Quincy usually has some pretty good DB's... nothing over the top, can garner some takeaways each year, and generally play hard and tight... But where QHS has been lacking for years now to me is at LB. They just play, and this is imo, a little too loose and free. They miss assignments on options a lot, always have. They tend to just want to fly forward and to the ball first which often times creates running lanes and bad attach angles when teams like Moline, and UT this year, start getting the run game going. The D-line has been quite stout in recent years, this year an average to above average version. But they aren't getting into the backfield against the league teams like they were early on. They rely heavily on that front 4 or 5 pressure, which lends to your DBs being capable of becoming the playmakers like they usually are. Against the CCL teams in the playoffs in recentish years, MTC and Prov that I can think of off the top, Quincy would struggle in the 1st and 2nd level against much stronger blocking schemes, and by then it's too late against good solid ground teams. I don't know what base D they run any more, they like to switch it up, but ultimately they rely on a 4-3 from what I can gather this year. sometimes they shift an OLB out and other times they rely heavily on two ILB to fill the run gaps... These are issues that have plagued Rick Little teams for years though... It's only been recently that the offense has become the star of the show. Obviously with some very quality RB's and WR's and then of course Rick's oldest son who sits near or in the top 10 for a lot of Illinois records now.

Yeah, and of course the years Sterling made back to back semi final appearances we got to the semis only having to beat 1 CCL team then in the semi final game we get the one year Chicago Philips a public leauge school was a power house. Today they sit like 0-6 what are the odds.
