Prematurely burying Beamer

Just a reminder that two years ago, there was a lot of premature burying of Beamer.

That defense and Sellers playing out of his mind turned that season around.

Now? We might not have that defense, or that version of Sellers, but we have a schedule that looks much better than it did a few weeks ago.

We have two wins. OU and A&M look bad. Really bad. Arkansas just plain sucks. Clemson is weaker than they have been in 20 years.

That could be 6 wins there. Upset UK, and we're talking 7 wins.

Don't bury Beamer just yet. He could easily squeak 6 wins out of this.

I'll give you the OU win. They look really bad. TAMU has not looked good, but we have looked totally inept.
Clemson is not the Clemson from just 5 years ago, BUT we are not the same team from just 2 years ago.

They will have to change the way they are playing Sellers. It was worth a shot trying to make him a passer, but it just isn't working. He only functions well as a run-first or run-preferred QB. He needs to run to be successful. When he's running, his passing is good enough. Primarily as a passer, though, his passing is not good enough. It also makes him a less effective runner.

And if we don't fix something with our secondary, nothing else really matters.

I've said all of this for a while. We are favored over UK, beating them is not some long shot possibility. OU has revealed themselves to be god awful on offense. They looked like they had never played football before Saturday against UGA. Their defense is good, but not shut down good. A&M has, once again, shown themselves to be nothing more than preseason hype and wishful thinking by their cult like fans. Arkansas might struggle with Kent State and Clemson isn't anything special. We have 5 remaining games we could very easily win and Beamer could end up 7-5.

I think, and have though all along, this is a 6 win season.

Like last year's team with the OL, though, this year's team appears to have one fatal flaw: the secondary.

EVERY opposing OC is absolutely licking their chops after seeing the absolutely wide open passes completed by MSU and Bama.

And we make too many mental mistakes. Drives stalled with penalties or a horrific pass from Sellers.

Here's the thing I see with Sellers. He is fine as a passer against weaker teams, but against talented opponents who can pressure him, the game moves too fast for him. I think against UK and Arkansas, he can throw the ball effectively. Against OU, aTm and Clemson, he is going to need to run more. Against UGA, Tennessee and UF, I'm not sure it's going to matter what he tries.

I also remember those were the only games Sellers played well. So that is maybe 4 or 5 games out of how many that hes actually lived up to the hype?

They will have to stop with the pre-snap penalties, stupid 4th down gambles, and leaving opposing receivers wide open all game long. They'll also have to throw the ball where our guy is and make smart in-game adjustments. I just named a list of things Beamer is incapable of coaching. I appreciate your support but you're just dreaming now. This guy hasn't learned or improved a single thing in 5+ years. He's still the same stubborn and childish character that first walked in the door.

Hopefully, Donati will ignore the kids this time and let the adults choose the coach.

I've mostly been pleased with the offense Briles is calling.

The one exception is that 4th down call against Bama with Brady Hunt coming under center. That was exceedingly dumb.

But, honestly, I think that was more of a Shane Beamer-ball call than a Briles call.

the one thing i can see this time around vs. 2 years ago is that locker room- those guys have totally checked out. there is no 'leader' who will make the team improve/ will them to win. they flat out do not know how to win.

I agree the 4th down calls are likely Beamer, but there are too many pre-snap penalties, and honestly Sellers isn't it. I never thought Beamer was a HC and I still don't. It was preposterous that his first gig is in the SEC. Tanner was and is a fool as is our BOT. Other coaches are proving it doesn't take 6 years to create a competitor much less a championship caliber team.

You’re not wrong. Two years ago I was one of the ones here still pumping sunshine about the team having a shot at a good season after 3-3. The defense/front 7 were really promising. You had Rocket and an emerging Sellers. I don’t feel the same way right now. The whole situation just feels broken at this point.

"this year's team appears to have one fatal flaw: the secondary."
That wreak should have been be fixed in the off season;
Do they do any kind of serious "stress testing"
in the off season ?.

"I also remember those were the only games Sellers played well. So that is maybe 4 or 5 games out of how many that hes actually lived up to the hype? "

In the 3 years as a starter, Sellers has never been a
"clutch" QB -never led the team to a "comeback" win -
that I remember. In contrast -with Rattler you "knew"
you always has a chance to win even if you were behind.

We did have impressive comeback wins over Missouri and Clemson with Sellers.

Solid play calling as well.
Rocket Sanders, Gage Lavardian, Joshua Simon & Dalevon Campbell were all transfers that were good players for us.

I see the possibility of any type of decent season hinging on this Kentucky game. I, also, see that game as pretty much a pick 'em game. We can win, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if we lose. Kentucky, although playing at home, looked much better matching up against Alabama than we did. Kentucky's defense at least was able to slow Alabama down a little bit. In 2024, we started off slow with wins, but that team looked competitive in every game except against Ole Miss. We could have been easily 5-1 going into the Oklahoma game instead of 3-3 if we had a FG kicker. As someone said earlier, this team looks broken. We have a QB with shaken confidence. We have players that don't know where to be in a zone defense. We have looked like a team that will struggle against any opponent with decent talent. Right now, I would almost take a 4-8 or 5-7 season because that would at least show that we didn't give up.

Problem is that even those teams mentioned have issues, their QBs are still capable of carving up this pathetic secondary of ours.

That would give Donati the leverage to keep him one more year to further reduce his buyout - a la Paris. Beamer is not the guy to take us to where we aspire to be. He's proven he isn't big enough - not nearly big enough - not in the neighborhood of big enough.

The root of the problem may be that some fans aspire to be somewhere we have never been and somewhere we have never really been close to. Those fans suffer from a break with reality. SC is a middling football program and has been for 130+ years.

Donati and everyone involved needs to shift their focus to building a powerhouse MBB and baseball school.

If Indiana can do it, anyone COULD do it. It's a matter of getting ALL the right people together, but getting the right head coach comes FIRST.

Beamer won’t be the Head Coach for the University of SC next season. If I am wrong we are all f***ed.

What I don’t know is after which game will they fire him or will they wait until the end of the season. One positive is that Ray Tanner isn’t the A/D and shouldn’t have any involvement in the next hire.

It's still a good idea if fashioned the way I proposed it. If it were all about compensation completely tied to achievement and only determined year to year, he would eliminate himself soon enough. Problem is, they're already late in implementing it. They went ahead and extended him a million years.
