If we are having a serious discussion, I was not sold on Campbell as being "the guy to get PSU over the hump".

He won 64% of his games at Toledo. He went to Iowa State and, with more resources than Toledo, against more difficult competition, he won 58% of his games. He comes to PSU with even more resources and even tougher competition.....and let's see what he does.

If Krafts' stated goal was to win NCs, then I don't think Campbell is the guy. If he just wanted someone to keep things status quo, then Campbell may be fine.

Campbell, Franklin, O'Brien and Joe (because he and I are on a first name basis), all have the same problem. It ranges from committment of those resources to obtaining more - and everything in between. And the real problem that these guys all have/had is that the juggernaut named Ohio State is in their backyard. Now add in Oregon, Indiana and Michigan, and the road gets tougher to get "over the hump".

That said, he is the coach and I support him and the team and want them to win. And I agree with your position that he was the only coach truly available. The Pa coal regions are a non starter - that area is dead on a number of levels and doesn't help PSU.
I didn't look at the coal regions for recruiting. Just the lure of a Pa. guy with a "Penn State heart." LOL

What? You think sitting inside the stadium
Gives you a better grasp? No way! Replays, slow mo, and closeups of players. Rock-O looked lost. Could you see his face from your seat in the stadium. Oh … our new coach > he looked either very calm … OR LIKE HE DID ‘T CARE.
Great support of the team screaming and yelling for them from your couch

No sane person thought this would be a playoff year. If Franklin was still here it wouldn't have been expected either.
Purdue lol

All we heard LAST year was how easy our schedule would be THIS year, and how hard it would be to fire Franklin THIS year if he stayed. How would we ever be able to fire “Big Game James” THIS year if he made the Playoffs again with this cupcake schedule he would be playing.

Kraft couldn’t wait to cut bait as soon as he could before Franklin screwed things up by starting to win again.

WRT Purdue, based on what I have seen with their passing game against actual P-4 teams like Wake Forest and UCLA, they would pick our secondary and LBs apart like a knife through butter. Especially with the impotent, non-existent pass rushing ability we have. We’re going to have to score 40 points or more against them to win, which is possible, because their defense is pretty bad. Like I said, it would be a matchup game.

One loss doesn' define HCMC and I still support him as much as yesterday. He deserves time here and hes embraced the school, I have faith he'll get it fixed. There is only one thing that has left me concerned since the spring. I thought the school should have invested in Grunkenmeyer after last year. I think he is a damn good QB and is still young. Maybe Manske will be great, but I thought putting all your eggs in the Rocco Becht basket, coming off of injury, and youre only getting one year from him, was....risky. We can talk loyalty and all that, but in reality, the only way becht made sense this year is if Campbell thought he could lead us to an outstanding year, not like a "rebuilding" year.

I think he’s got a couple seasons after this year to demonstrate he can right the ship (meaning the CFP once again is legitimately attainable). But, I’ve been concerned about recruiting under him and his staff. We will see where things go with Campbell.

However, my instinct before he was even hired was that it was likely going to be the guy after the next guy (which means after Campbell) who might have the better chance to get us a little further than we saw with Franklin.
Essentially this. Remember too that Campbell was not the first choice - there were a lot of others (OK, rumors, but still), and if memory serves, I think he was the fifth or sixth guy behind others. I think a lot of potential candidates wanted nothing to do with Kraft, and Campbell might have figured he had little to lose.

I doubt that Campbell will go until Kraft goes. I give Kraft maybe another year or so (let's see what happens with the basketball team this year, and football next year). I also don't think the administration/board has the burning desire necessary to build a solid athletic program. I think Penn State is going to become what Indiana was (with really bad basketball).

As time goes on, I become more and more detached from the University and the sports teams. I watched some of the game yesterday, and other than the first INT (pick six), which would've been a highlight reel for any team, I really couldn't feel the passion. When Wisconsin went ahead, I wasn't surprised, and I really didn't care that much.

And as far as Franklin, he's gone and he needed to go. I don't miss him and I wouldn't want him back.

Not from me you didn't hear that?
I wasn't even onboard with firing James until he lost to Northwestern
It wouldn't be a matchup game--you're overreacting to losing yesterday plus your bias towards James is a factor
Hell, if James was back this year and lost yesterday I wouldn't be asking for him to be fired at 3-1...now if he kept losing the next several weeks that would have changes AFTER more than a decade not in year 1.
On the other board, I was one of his biggest defenders for years.

If you didn't see this coming, you should have. This team finished mid-pack in the Big 12 last year- did you honestly think they would do better in a stronger conference?

And don't blame Campbell, he's going to have the same problem that Franklin had- inadequate resources to rise beyond a mid-pack B1G team.

Bear Bryant couldn't have won Championships under these circumstances.
Agree with one caveat. Campbell should have seen the talent gap, and realized that 7 cyclones on offense would not make it in the big ten. If his assessment was off because he thought there was no one better, this is a major whiff on WB and spending NIL

You want me to feel sorry for you after you and your boo bird buddies ran one of the best college football coaches in the country out on a rail?? Sorry. You made your bed. Now you have to sleep in it. I’ll bi+ch about your insanity all I want since it affects the future of our football Program.
Dude, I did not run Franklin out of town. I had no power to do that, and would not wish to have it even were that possible. I think his departure was probably a good thing for all concerned. He had a lot of success, but it is inarguable that his record in big games was atrocious. He was catching a whole lot of crap for the Preseason No. 2 team simply falling apart (which it did, in spectacular fashion), so a change of scenery was probably a good thing both for him and Penn State.

I understand that there is an argument to be made about not firing him. Fine. But making it at this late date seems like a ginormous waste of time.

We just blew up an extremely successful 11 year TOTAL rebuild of a Football Program coming off two Playoff wins, and a trip to the National Semi-Finals. If we’ve gotten so spoiled that “falling apart in spectacular fashion” means losing three games by a GRAND TOTAL of 6……..SIX TOTAL FREAKIN POINTS, in regulation time, or an average of TWO points per game, we deserve what we got yesterday. A trip back to mediocrity., or like Nebraska, worse.

At least in Nebraska’s case, after about a 14 year self inflicted series of disasters, they look like they might be finally digging themselves out of a hole. They look pretty good this year so far.

Heck. You losers were even booing Campbell yesterday.

I know you are being sarcastic (you are right?) but the only coach that was truly available, I'd have preferred is Chesney. Lower floor, but IMO, much higher ceiling. The Pa. coal region roots would have sold as well. But Campbell will be better than most of the Kraft targets. I mean where in hell did he come up with Sitake and see that as a good fit?
This, finally someone says the thing is was thinking. That screamed desperation to me.

Obviously….the key to success is firing the coach every year until you find one that goes 12-0 and wins a NC.
If they listened to 37% of the voters in this poll that's what would happen. As a social experiment it would be interesting to know how that vote breaks down as Democrats and Republicans Liberals/Conservatives.

It's one game!! If it keeps snowballing down hill from here then ask me at the end of the season

Does Campbell last the season? I picture him on the field taking it all in after the next home loss. Then he gets sh|tcanned the next day. Terry Smith is interim coach and a NATIONAL. SEARCH. o_O starts after season. That’s how it’s done in the big leagues. Championships are the standard, after all.

Big game James? Well Big Game Matt couldn't even win a small Big Ten Game against an unraked team that was a 10-point underdog!!!

And as for Campbell being a better in-game coach! Ha! Campbell BLEW A 17-POINT LEAD AT HOME TO AN UNRANKED 10-POINT UNDERDOG!! And he's nowhere near the recruiter Franklin is. Enjoy being Iowa State! Enjoy mediocrity!! You spoiled Penn State fans deserve every loss!!!

The second winningest coach in Penn State football history wasn't good enough for you....nooooooo. Franklin couldn't beat Ohio State. Campbell can't beat Wisconsin, a school Franklin never lost to.

Well someone called a timeout....after a timeout on 4th and short to.....now get this....punt. That is evidence of jv high school football clock management. Good thing PSU didn't need a time out on the last drive of the game.

Winning is overrated. All it means is that your team ran an oblong ball across a line or kicked it through a big yellow ‘T’ more than the other team. Silly in the grand scheme of things.
Move the football stadium back to its original location and give the land back to the cows, and the pigs. I used to park in the entrance way to the pig pen and i always felt bad about it.
