USC just reminded everyone why they are so reviled.

If you haven't seen video footage of the helmet to helmet hit that USC's Desman Stephens II put on Oregon QB Dante Moore, after Moore had already gone down with a slide, you will likely see it a whole lot more. Stephens was ejected for targeting, which I think was a very easy call to make. But what happened after that was truly disgusting. Stephens' USC teammates were congratulating him on the hit on Moore, even as Moore lay on the field, legs twitching.

An ambulance rolled to the end of the Coliseum tunnel, and Moore was eventually loaded in and taken to a local hospital. You could see movement in his hands and feet, which was a relief, but the celebrating on the Trojan sideline was, to say the least, difficult to watch. I was very glad to see the Ducks win the game.

I believe the reaction to this incident is only beginning, and I want to hope that Lincoln Riley or someone more senior in the USC administration recognizes that they have to put a clamp on the kind of display that happened today against Oregon. I wish I could say I was surprised that it was USC, but I am not.

That was awful. There was not a single moment of contrition or empathy - those dirtbags kept celebrating.
That is something sociopath’s do. This guy should be kicked off the team and have his NIL taken away. But not going to happen because the dirtbag who is his coach and of course, the lawyers.

Coach Lanning trying to stay relevant in the reviled ball buster category. Pressor by same coach that lost to Jokie St.

Well, USC head coach Lincoln Riley suspended Desman Stephens II for next week's game against UW (doing so after UW lost to Minny). But my recollection is that a targeting call puts the guilty player out of not just the balance of the game in which the targeting penalty is called, but in his team's next game as well.

So, unless I am mistaken, Stephens would have been out for next week's USC-UW game in any event, no? Reminds me of that paragon of sportsmanship, Urban Meyer, suspending Florida LB Brandon Spikes for a whole half of a game (against Vanderbilt) for trying to gouge out the eyes of Georgia players while in several end of play pileups.

+1. I am shocked at what I have seen from some college players and their head coaches ignoring it. Looking at you Sark.

He wouldn't have been suspended.

It used to be that a 2nd half targeting penalty meant a suspension for the first half of the following game. However they modified the rules this season, and a first targeting infraction by a player (during the season) just means they're ejected from the current game.

Hard to blame Riley. I mean it’s not like the guy coaches defense.

Out of curiosity do nil contracts have terminations or clawbacks for morals-related issues?

OK. Thanks for the info. At least the suspension means something, then.

There is no reason the Big Ten can't review the targeting and extend the suspension. What would be fair is to suspend him for the same period of time that Moore can't play, or 3 games, whichever is longer.

I think it might be longer, seems the kid has cut his social media and changed his address.
