Kudos to the Defense for gutting out the time of possession gap

Wow. Mich with nearly 35 minutes where the hawks had to chase after Underwood, etc etc and all the misdirection takes it out the players.

But once Mich went ahead 19 to 14 the defense really got down and tough. PParker and the guys kept them under 20 again. Outstanding and astounding, both.

I thought Mich's speed made the hawks take some bad angles in the first half but the players adjusted.

yes and I hate to say it but on one play Eppy was held up by a #5 jersey fairly thin wide receiver which sort of shocked me.

It always worries me when when you have a kick off returned for a TD after the other team scores. Of course you like them but Michigan just had a 9 play touch down and your D gets no rest. Michigan then goes on a 8 play field goal. Then at the end of the game they had the ball 10 minutes longer than Iowa, Glad the D could step up and get the needed stops.

I'm normally one of the biggest cheerleaders of the defense on this board, and they did only allow 19 points, but that was the most out of synch I've seen an Iowa defense look in years. Constantly taking bad angles from the edges, overruning plays, and very slow to react in the secondary on zone coverages. The whole game felt very un-Iowa like.

He's a big dual threat QB and his throws were way more accurate than I've seen from him before. His receivers helped him out with some great grabs. Since the lone pick was at the 2 it really didn't hurt him that much. He threw for 275 and ran it 15 times, that's a tough combo to stop, but in the end they only averaged 3.8 yards per carry as a team and Bryce 2.6. I'll take that every day against them...

What frustrates me is Phil has sent nothing in the form of blitzing this year. Does he not have much faith or are we trying to hold back on what we have for hopefully a game like next week or later in the year?

The defense was terrible. 430 yards. Couldn’t defend or tackle in space. It looked nothing like the defenses we’ve grown accustomed to. But the bend don’t break approach somehow allowed the Hawks a chance to win.

But the Iowa offense has more playmakers than the D by far. Parker gonna have to scheme his way to keep things together.

Watch the NIU game. We tinker with it.

Problem is I think Phil relies on his "bread and butter" a little too much when he doesn't trust a younger/inexperienced defense.

It worked today, and for now anyways, that's all that matters.

I think Phil needs to pick his spots and blitz. That's the one thing that drives me crazy. In obvious blitzing situations, Phil sits back almost every time. Sometimes even great defenses need to apply some pressure. Do it smart, but do it.

Agree somewhat, but maybe this young defense will just keep getting better and better. Some well-timed blitzes definitely would be welcome.

i keep reading about how substandard and/or dumb throwers underwood and chiles are but they sure seem to eat up the iowa D like nothing...as long as we win i'm good but chiles isn't going to be worried about iowa

The key to Underwood and soon to be Chiles is you have to get pressure on them for them to make their boneheaded mistakes. Their downfield IQ isn’t the best but if they have time and/or space…it usually doesn’t bode well.

You don't remember @ Michigan State 2 years ago we played way worse Defense... it was very uncharacteristic for us...
