The Conference season opens this Friday night and with only 6 teams that means only 3 games to look at.

3A Mt Airy 3-2 travels across the creek to 4A North Surry, 3-2

4A West Stokes 2-3 host 4A Forbush 3-2

3A Surry Central 0-5 host 3A East Surry 1-4

My best guess is Mt Airy is not real kind to North Surry and wins by 28.
West Stokes shows life over Forbush winning by 14.
East Surry will be neighborly to Surry Central but scores 30 plus.

I believe this is the point in the season that Mt Airy starts separating itself from the rest of the conference leaving West Stokes to prove it is better than their 2 and 3 record might indicate.

2.West Stokes- Strength of schedule should help them
3.East Surry gets win number 2

Mt Airy in close one over NS
West Stokes by 40 over Forbush
East Surry by 45 over SC

West Stokes outscored Northeast Guilford 12-0 second half without starting QB. Lost game 22-19 but good effort.

Unfortunately, I don't think any of these games will be close.

NS has two bad loses on their record with a few okay wins. Hopefully NS can turn it around but just don't see it happening. MA by 21.
WS has played the tougher schedule and will be too much for Forbush. WS by 28+
ES wins by whatever they want. SC is just not good. ES score will only be limited by the running clock. ES by 42+

Agree that none will be competitive.
SC is just not any good, NS plays a weak non-conference schedule and they didn’t come out of that looking very good at all, keep hoping that they can turn that corner. Forbush is making progress but I don’t think they are quite there yet.
Was really hoping that this would be a competitive conference but that isn’t what we ended up with.

I think it will be competitive in the future. This year and last 3 teams have played soft non, conference schedules and 3 have played very tough schedules. We will see how it plays out.

Side note Omari Graham was selected to play in the shrine bowl from West Stokes. Big congratulations to him and coaching staff.

Whiptedo. A not great northeast without their starting QB. What's the rationale in that? The same team that took the southeastern school of sustainability all the way to overtime? Ummmm ummmmm good. Lowman is still a charlatan. In fighting amongst his Mt tabor posse, a tackle who is gonna get mt airy whole line nominated for all conference, and a guy who has alienated the fan base so much so that the former head coach is at East Surry. Ha.giid to be on here and commenting after years of reading your hot takes king. Informed as ever.

Simmons had northeast as 40 point win. West played second half without their QB. Upchurch probably helping ES close to home. Southern school of sustainability is a 7a school ranked 67 in state. Northeast Guilford has a good team and coaching staff.

At this point in the season, I would say the conference will finish:
  1. MA
  2. WS
  3. ES
  4. NS
  5. Forbush
  6. SC
If any of these teams catch each other on a bad night I could see them all moving up or down one spot (with the exception of SC) but that's about it. However, there's a lot of history with these schools, coaches and players so maybe we'll see some surprises.

I did not do too bad in my forecasting, I missed Mt Airy over North Surry, I said 28 and they actually won by 30.
Mt Airy did have all 36 in the first half and had a running clock to begin the 3rd qt.

It's also a very good conference. West Stokes , East Surry and MA play very thought non conference schedules. In fact some of the toughest in the state. North well. They can't get it done but that's a culture thing. They got some players.

The question is, why did anybody think NS would have competed in that game? Because of their offensive stats? Easy to have when you play terrible teams. The way it looks they may finish 0.500 for the season. Maybe they will match up against a bad 2 win team like last year in the playoffs so they can get one more win.

Earlier in the year I had serious reservations about how Mt Airy Varsity Football Team would perform this year. The reservations centered on:
quality of returning players; talent level of previous year's JV players; and the maturity level/development of the coaching staff.

Let me share how these areas might be viewed today.
Quality of returning players is a real surprise on the positive side. The O and D line play has really been solid from the start. With a mix of seniors and juniors, sprinkled with a few sophomores has really developed and continuing to get better. Not absolutely overpowering, but beside the Virginia Jefferson Forest game the O and D lines have held their own if not been superior to the opposition.

Running back Mason has really blossomed into a threat every time he touches the ball. Not every player develops at the same rate. Some earlier, some later. Mason has physically filled out, improved his speed and expanded his field vision greatly. After 6 games and about 1300 yards and 12 or 13 TDs, I would not trade him for any other RB we have seen this year.

The QB, due to life threating injuries to last year's QB, to my knowledge had never played the position and has had to learn an awful lot, and most of it while under fire. But, with the support and tutoring of the coaching staff, has stepped up to be a very serviceable if not pretty doggone good QB.

A real surprise has been the way the sophomores, now juniors and a couple of freshmen have really developed into full fledge contributors.

But I think the last area is the most important; maturing and developing of the coaching staff. Starting with the second-year head coach and going down the line, I believe they are on the verge of becoming as solid a group as previous outstanding staffs of JK Adkins, of Kelly Holder and of Coach Hollingsworth.

The measurement here is not mine but rather a former Bear player who went to Duke football and, also provided one of Mt Airy's best every linebackers. Bobby said to me, many years ago when I moved to Mt Airy, was that over the years the coaching staffs were so good that "they" would allow/cause Mt Airy to win 1 to 3 games a year the talent had no business winning.

I think this coaching group is beginning to show they are on the path to reaching that level.

All of this is not to say that Mt Airy can/will win the State Championship this year. It is meant to say that the future of Mt Airy to stay in the hunt for the next several years is possible.

It would not surprise me if Mt Airy wins out the regular season and goes 3 or 4 rounds in the playoffs this year.

The kids have improved and it's not just on the field. Look at the arms of the mt airy kids. They are big and cut. That's the head coach in the weight room. That's the. Culture. The serious physical culture they have developed. They will never beat a Jefferson Forest probably but should of really beat starmount easily. They just had no idea how good they were and the refs at starmount felt like the kids from the rams were getting hit so hard that it looked like they didn't know what to do with how physical the rams were 0 is going to the shrine bowl. 55 kicked his ***. It was amazing. Poor ly called game but also two bad plays in the secondary by the bears. If the bears learn how to step on the gas when they are up they are a good third or 4th round team.
I'll also tell you this. Whoever is gonna get them do it now. Because it gets better and better for the next 4 to 5 years. Untouchable around here. Cards will be decent but bears will be very very good.
