Is Surace the future? If so, let him play.

Rumor is Schiano loved him also, which shows how the game has passed him by.
Greg doesn’t recruit QBs, Kirk is the one making QB recruit decisions. So far AJ hasn’t looked like a good one but Athan was a pretty good one.

No chance he’s retained with 5/6 wins with the stench of UMass still there & losing to BC.

I legitimately think he would need to win 7/8 games at this point to stay on and that’s not really looking possible without some miracles.

first of all he’s not winning 6. If he did, that would mean 5-4 in conference and our first winning record in the BIG. Unless Zinn has Kelly locked down and that’s the plan, we’re not moving on under that scenario.

She didn’t hire Greg, she can move on anytime she wants. It doesn’t matter who the hire is, they realize a new management team is needed.

She can - but I doubt she would if he got to 6-6 unless she really wants Kelly and feels she needs to lock it down now. In pretty much any other case, waiting until she has more money to work with would make better longer term sense. At 4 or less wins all bets off. He can’t stay. 5 I’m not sure what we’d do.

Surace makes the mistakes that first year starter makes. Longeran makes mistakes that an experienced QB shouldn't make.

Lonergan only had one season starting (BC in 25). AK started 3 seasons (and he had 111 attempts as a frosh). A young rookie QB can do well when you have a good OL but Its hard to learn with a weak one. A QB is playing only 11-12 games a year. They say the time of actual action play in a one hour game is 11-18 minutes. Subtract the defense portion of time and consider offense for 12 games = (say) 9 minutes would be 1.8 hours of post snap action for a season.

Lonergan makes some good throws but he can imitate Nova with forced passes into triple and quad coverage. That's the kind of thing young QBs try. Surace I don't know a lot about but watching highlights two of his four INTs and two were on the receivers (and not Duff). Neither of these guys will be Caleb Williams at USC because even with more time and practice RU does NOT imagine QBs as stud game winners . RUs Offense is supposed to be a secure, smooth machine running on all parts (rarely happens though). Greg actually has a service academy type team every year with a few stars and a lot of weak spots. In 06 he had an offense and a defense. Most other years its a half baked pizza

Stop overthinking everything, before the season 5/6 wins was the minimum, after the UMass embarrassment and BC loss, that isn't going to save anyone.

If we won 6 he’d be picking up some solid wins that offset the UMass and BC losses that he wouldn’t have gotten with only 3 conference wins. 6 wins is 6 wins. Now a) he’s a huge longshot to pull it off and b) it’s not a given he’ll even get the chance.

This is the type of response as to why the school has never moved forward in the past. You don't embarrass your employer and still expect to have a job because they played better later on. They should have been ready to go Week 1 not week 6.

It’s not about this year. It’s about making the best medium term decision for Rutgers. If Kelly didn’t have someone picked out who she really wants and can afford in hand by the season’s end - the smartest decision at 6-6 would still be to hold off and raise more money. You can incrementally sell a program that steadily improved over the course of the season and bide your time. Yes - even with the UMass loss because at that point it would be in the rear view mirror). Again - this scenerio is highly unlikely. 5-4 would be a first in the BIG and we’ll be favored in zero of those games.

Can’t market the program at 4-8 or worse under any circumstances. We’ll have to make a move there which could mean we don’t end up with someone we really want.

No one is giving money with Greg leading the team at this point. Smart people aren’t going to waste their dollars on a guy that couldn’t beat UMass with his “best roster ever”.

You’re arguing for the sake of arguing when you’ve already said you don’t see them getting to 5 or 6 wins.

And with Needham getting destroyed as LT. Also the Umass game may look different in a few weeks time -remains to be seen. The talking head Portnoy types aside but no serious people give him any mind.
UMass game will not look or feel different. We got physically and schematically destroyed. No on le cares what their final record is in a non lower 4 conference. Greggy shouldn’t have coached another game

Come on. Stop. Surace looked basically unplayable. It had nothing to do with experience. His footwork is not good at all and he routinely throws off his back foot. That has nothing to with experience.

This is not to remotely suggest that Lonergan is “good” but he is miles and miles better than AJ right now. Enough so to get the nod despite significant limitations due to injury.
Neither of them are good enough but yes experience did play into Surace bad performance. Happy feet and throwing ofc your back foot is the young man looking T the rush and not being fundamentally sound. (Nervous)

Once again neither of them should be starting so it doesn’t matter

Here is the thing with Greg and pretty much any P4 HC - even though they may name someone as being in charge of recruiting or even in charge of recruiting a particular position group- It does not mean they are really owning it. That coach will be directed as to what type of player Greg wants. Coach goes out and brings as many names and highlights that they like that fit that criteria. Greg tells them who to take next steps with. Those get schedule- phone/video calls- visits, etc. Then Greg and coach get together and Greg lets that coach talk first but Greg has final say on who comes in for final visit.
Greg makes the final choice...

Giving a coach the "responsibility" of being in charge of recruiting any position group is more about eliminating the mundane work for himself. Not the decision making

I did a long post on the RT about this about a year ago. I speak to RU alums with money who could donate but won't because it's good money chasing bad results i.e. Greg. There is a lot of money, not whale money but a ton of guys that could donate 6 figures plus that refuse with Greg there. Of course it was boohooed but it's on point as I talk to them, know what they want to give and the disgust they have for Rutgers for athletics and in particular, Greg.

clearly the DC has nothing to do with it
not sure if that is sarcasm but I'll just say ..of course this D isn't great. That was in my first sentence. BUT I think they have gotten better overall even with those damn chuck plays and crappy pass defense and lack of rush.... they were good enough to have won each of the last two games. Clearly doesn't help with the QBs giving up 11 Killer TO's in 12 quarters. Cut that in half and we win with these two back there.

It seemed like the raw talent was there for Surace but some of the footwork stuff was jarring. I hate to make long-term judgments off one game, but I've never seen that type of footwork/decision making before at this level.

Agree on the last part. Lonergan was accurate last year and did not throw many picks. He’s by no means good but what he did at BC as their QB was significantly better than what Surace showed against BC (at similar experience points).

Nobody would’ve been good at QB in the UMass game. AK would’ve struggled too with that lack of protection and no plays off because the run game was going nowhere. So we’re really only judging Dylan’s inaccuracy at RU so far on one game where it was reported that he couldn’t consistently grip the football due to injury.

Again - your last point still stands.

what sarcasm, you do know that Greg took over half way through with the easier part of the schedule and it was worse.

you cited the DC, Rob Smith is the scapegoat.....clearly

KC never should have called that mesh stuff. The kid wasn't ready for that and now, he's not calling them on Lonergan either which helps. Two of Surace's Int's were over the middle and the LB got them. Coaches usually don't call those plays with a young QB because of the LB unless, you're running something to get the LB's to move. Anyway, Lonergan should be much more advanced than Surace. He is advanced but if he's gone next year (I don't know if NIL offers 2 year contracts), it's back to Surace and someone else from the portal. I'd like to see Surace again but protected better and also Ashenfelder for a half.

Also, Surace was sacked 3 times and pressured 11 times against BC. Lonergan was sacked 1 time and pressured 2 times against USC..

surface isn't very good and neither will be here next year as the new coach is going to want his own people

I dont mind the mesh but I think it goes on too long. I thought Sam Brown got hurt staying in the mesh too long as tacklers were coming down on him.

On one of the Surace INTs BC defenders rushed unblocked and were in his face as he was throwing. Then the RU receiver was lazy about attempting a catch. Duff probably catches that one. Hard to play QB with defenders coming in free off the edges and receivers that wont lay out

This thread started with a question, an if, and a conclusion based on that question and if, and then it went on to make just as much sense as such a beginning would suggest. Surace was not a highly recruited guy, and he threw a bunch of interceptions to a team whose only other victory came against team that lost by nine to Merrimack. Surace is here for his third year. The future? When has there ever been any credible basis to see him as a player to base the program’s future on. Heck, he’s three years in. Even if he could become the future, it’d be short lived. Where is any of this coming from?
