They called a penalty in the carolina game where they said a carolina player intentionally hit one of our coaches. Does anyone have a link to video of it? I searched but couldn't find a video of it.

ETA: Never mind, I found it, I think. There was a penalty where a carolina coach inadvertently ran into an official. If the offical thought it was an accident, not sure it should have been a penalty.

If you make contact with an official it should be an automatic penalty. No exceptions.

The white box along the sidelines is for the refs only. If a coach is in that spot and the ref runs into him it's a penalty on the coach. I'm guessing that's what happened here.

And for the chain gang and whoever is working the box. I never really appreciated it until I started working on a chain gang for high school football. Getting those chains moved quickly when there's a bunch of coaches and players standing in your way is a pain. That's a big reason why the refs are always telling everyone to move back.

Did you find a clip of it?

I asked here Sunday morning, for I could have sworn the ref said a player ran into or pushed a coach. It didn't make any sense to me at the time and they never showed a replay. I recall it being a personal foul penalty as well. Are all ref interference calls personal fouls?

Here's what AI says and this is strictly for CFB......

If a coach (or any player/staff member) makes physical contact with an official on the sideline, it is a 15-yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty administered as a dead-ball foul. [1]
According to Rule 9-2-5-b of the NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations, the rulebook separates simple "presence" on the sideline from actual "physical contact": [1]

1. The Normal Sideline Warning "Ladder"
If a coach is just standing in the restricted 6-foot white border but does not touch an official, the referee follows a warning progression: [1, 2]
  • 1st offense: A sideline warning (no yardage penalty).
  • 2nd & 3rd offense: A 5-yard Delay of Game penalty.
  • 4th+ offense: A 15-yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. [1]

2. The Physical Contact Exception (Instant 15 Yards)
When a coach or player physically collides with, bumps, or forces an official to veer out of their way, the rulebook states that the official skips the entire warning ladder. It triggers an immediate 15-yard penalty on the very first infraction. [1]
Because the sideline official is sprinting at full speed while tracking a live play on the field, any person occupying that white border creates a severe safety hazard that can result in concussion, broken ribs, or torn ligaments for the officia

That is a good rule to skip the warnin ladder with contact. As a soccer ref damn near every game I have to tell a coach or ask parents to please stand back. Last year I had a good friend that ran over a toddler on the side line, this is after he asked multipe times to keep the kid back. The result was he had to have knee surgury from the incident.

I thought that that was what the ref said too, but I couldn't find any mention of it. The only thing close is what I said in the original post.

As a former HS football official, yes, the rule is there to protect all participants, particularly game officials. Any contact by a player, coach or other sideline attendant with an official either on the field or in the 'white box' is an automatic 15-yard dead ball foul. Chain crews shall work 2 yards off the field when space is available. They no long work on the actual sideline boundary.
Funny story, I was the head linesman for the first game of a season many years ago-a Thursday night match-up of Columbia Academy and Presbyterian Christian. The new rule took effect that season, and we reminded the coaches pre-game.
Opening kick off, Joey 'The Hawk' Hawkins, head coach of PCS, was in the white box during the kick. So, I flagged him (1st one is just a warning, no penalty) as we were instructed to do by the MPSA. He didn't like it much, but his *** stayed out of it the rest of the night. My crew members and I believe it to be the first infraction of the season and the first of its kind in the MPSA according to that rule.

Same thing happened in the SEC Championship Game a couple years ago. The ref ran into Georgia’s third string kicker or something and they were flagged 15 yards, which killed the drive.
