Just a blurb, but it seems like a sensible plan to consolidate. I'm sure some of you are more knowledgeable about the closings.

It is not a topic that can reasonably be discussed/understood via a "blurb" - but the razing of the CWC system (and it is closer to the beginning of the razing than the end) was a considered desire of the current administration. One that has been shrouded in a tremendous amount of propaganda, and that will accelerate now that McKinsey has been given control of the University. A move that was incredibly obfuscated by the current powers that be at the University..

I believe that misericordia is purchasing the Wilkes Barre campus or at something to that extent
The Wilkes Barre Campus was sold to Huntsville Golf Club (a club in that area) - to be converted into Clubhouse/Event space for the golf club..

I believe the golf club's "subsidiary" (may or may not be the technical and precisely correct term, but you get the picture) known as HGC LimLiabCo is the official buyer, and will do the purchase/development.

Misericordia is, of course, a college more or less next door to Wilkes Barre campus (a mile or two away?)
Whether there were ever any serious negotiations wrt Misicordia and PSU Wilkes Barre? IDK.
But - Cliff's Notes here, of course - once the state legislature and the governor gave PSU the "get out of jail free card" (House Bill 2559) to sell to whomever they wanted - waiving all the requirements of the original agreement, including that an "educational concern" had to be maintained, there was no need to consider such ventures.
Portions of the land/buildings purchased by HGC may be leased to Misicordia in separate (non-PSU) transactions.

I hope by that time someone eliminates the term 'liberal arts' and discovers the real terminology - 'the study of Humanities'
Was talking with an old friend about this the other day. We both were really interested in and studied German at the university level. He even got a degree in it. I did not but took senior level courses at State in it and went to Cologne on the foreign studies program (I only spent 5 terms at Main). BUUUT. He also got a business degree and I got a chemistry degree. We both did well in life and used German quite a bit IRL. But we did not depend on it for a career.

What is the implication here? That someone is involved on both the PSU and golf club sides pushed to sell it to the latter instead of pursuing all avenues?

I actually don't have any problems with closing Commonwealth Campuses that are underutilized in principle - I don't think the cost of running them makes sense and the small student populations means offerings are limited by necessity. Most of those students can be better serviced with online coursework if living at or going to a different campus does not work.

But $1M for a 13 acre campus and $5.25M for a 57 acre campus just seems unbelievable cheap. I know they are not exactly in high cost areas but that's a good bit of land and I presume for Shenango the buildings will continue to be used so they should have value too.

Phil betting he can create an engineering college. Oregon doesn't currently offer bachelor’s Eng. degrees. Comments are sweet . Once the Ducks offer NIL money, Name Image Labs, to the PSU profs, they are headed west.

I commented on here before about this, but it is pretty crazy to me that a large state school like Oregon doesn't have engineering. I realize in some states you have a more engineering focused school (as is the case with Oregon with Oregon State) but even the "other" school still usually has some engineering programs.

UNC is the other major school that I have seen without an engineering department (though at least in that case it's in the same metro area as NC State and Duke).

One thing AI is really good at is finding counterexamples in mathematics. Two big conjectures have recently been proven to be false because AI came up with counterexamples.

Translate for me please

A 'stau' is when traffic backs up on the autobahn (so, a traffic jam). You'll often see signs that say 'stau' well before you hit one.

Rich kids will because for their parents, the biggest feather in any cap is where their kids went to school.
It will be the opposite. What we think of as traditional college will be mostly middle class / low class kids getting government subsidized degrees in fields of little real world use. The rich kids will be using the state of the art self-education tools that will make college obsolete.

Uh, sorry, you can't wear a hat or finance-bro vest around the country club with 'Self Education U' on it to impress the other wealthy parents; you need an Ivy League or elite liberal arts school name on it. With all that money, the school their kids go to matters a TON.

Weird, because you're literally THAT guy, choosing to send your kids to a fancy private school (in elementary school, no less), and casually bragging/name-dropping all the super-rich and famous folks you rub elbows with, as a result.

I still don't buy it. Cat's out of the bag with college. 75% of the degrees are a worthless money grab. The kids graduating are dumber than high school graduates from 2 generations ago and they're $100K+ in debt.

People can **** on AI all they want but we are less than 2 years away from AI being smarter on every topic than every college professor on the planet combined. And it will be able to deliver lessons, have discussions, and quiz you better than the best teacher you've ever had. When today's kindergarten age kids are adults they are going to find it hysterical that we used to pay tens of thousands of dollars a year to sit in auditoriums to listen to other people teach subjects that have no practical value in society.

I'm debating notifying my older child that this is happening. CMU was his first choice, and he didn't get in, despite a 1540 SAT and great grades in the most challenging curriculum our HS provides (he did chose the most hyper-competitive field of study, but still), and he's now settled in to getting his degree (and maybe a couple minors, or even another major) in 3 years where he's enrolled. Perhaps he'd be more interested in grad school there, now ... presumably with more openings available.
