I’m a little skeptical of the data as that to me indicates they are basically getting no true NIL money but that is all revenue sharing dollars. As I believe the football team is in the $17-18M range on revenue sharing.
We have a smaller payroll than everyone other than Purdue. Nebraska and Wisconsin spend 150% of what we do. Yea sure KF Doesn’t have Iowa punching way above our weight. Lol
we are winning with culture and as a developmental program, which is really cool.

So Iowa is 17th in BIG ,ahead of only Purdue.
Glad we play boilers.

How long can kf keep Iowa afloat in top tier of league with the lowest payroll?

I hate to think gravity of money will ultimately bring Iowa fb down with rest of poors.

The data is hard to refute...the golden age of Iowa FB is severely threatened unless rules change or an Iowa Larry Ellison shows up eager to spend.

Need continuity in the program, keep the same culture or we will fall like a rock. That’s pretty obvious.

No, they are comparing apples to apples.

Team payroll = rev. sharing( 15 million) + nil( cept for a Caitlyn clark type national ad payout).

Iowa probably does 15 million revenue sharing plus 2-6 million swarm type donations to get to 17-21 million total.

Texas total does not include much of arch Manning's 10 million from national ads, for example.
Iowa has no national ad players

I’m surprised Iowa doesn’t have more corporate donors , especially with all the Chicago based alumni. Something our AD definitely needs to work on.

I wouldn't put too much stock in any of the reported numbers. Knowing how tight lipped Iowa is about financial matters this is essentially revenue sharing and then add 3 mil because the author assumes Iowa can pull at least that. I doubt they got an accurate figure from anyone with connections to the program.

We’re playing the college football version of Moneyball. Nothing wrong with that as long as we’ve got smart, capable folks that can identify under the radar talent and develop it. Getting the legislation passed that will limit player movement to only one transfer in 5 years will help a program like Iowa’s immensely.

I think that this makes a good point that more goes into it than throwing money at a roster. Scheme, culture, character, development are all important. Kirk is definitely punching above his weight in the B1G.

That being said, it would likely elevate the talent on the team to be able to get more proven recruits from P4 schools than having to scour for diamonds in the rough.

I think many Iowa corporations are scared to commit money because they don’t want to write two checks. One to Iowa and another to Iowa State.

For example…..
if Casey’s dumped a truck load of money onto Iowa or Iowa State you can bet the other teams fans would stop going to Casey’s.

On the EADA report Iowa spent 51 million on the football team.

I doubt expenses from travel, coaches salaries, equipment, etc add up to 30 mil. I’m not really convinced by the data here.
Those expenses cannot include player compensation beyond the mandated revenue sharing limits on all schools.
So yes the 15 million revenue sharing is included, like every other BIG school but that's it.

Apparently Iowa spent 2-6 million in nil for FB this year...as KF keeps saying..college fb needs a salary cap.

I would say that a estimate can be made. Other teams have been involved in recruiting NIL players and may disclose what they offered. Josh Hoover is said to cost $4 million. He was at TCU having a QB rating of 153.4 and throwing for almost 3500 yards before transferring to Indiana. They also got NIL recruits from Wisconsin, 2 from Kansas State, and a honorable mention WR from MSU. All these players are said to be paid over $1 million per year. There is also a position breakdown of what players are paid. Getting recruits from power 5 schools is going to cost

I think it is safe to say Tony Diaz cost less than Indiana's Nick Marsh, the WR from MSU who as a sophomore caught 59 passes for 662 yards and 6 Tds and is 6'3'' 210. An estimate would be between $400,000 and $600,000 for Tony and $1 million for Marsh. Seems reasonable to me.

Indiana has Marc Cuban who has not disclosed the exact amount but has said it is a "big number."
It's true. I think some context is in order here however. Cuban wasn't a major NIL donor prior to Cignetti turning the program around in his first year in charge. He's told everyone that it was Cignetti's success that encouraged him to participate in a big way. IU's NIL budget looked a lot more like Iowa's until last year.

IU has always had more money than Iowa , Eli Lily has been funding them for years. Their basketball program was drowning in money during woodsons era and before that.

Iowa has the second smallest nil budget in the BIG and literally less than half of IUs, this is for the idiots out there that claim Cignetti has no advantage, lol.
Hey if you wanna say Cignetti cheated right away and was able to secure extra funds for players when he got on campus the year they went 11-2 and made the CFP in his first year, then by all means, I'd support your efforts! 😃

Mark Cuban and Curt Cignetti bonded over the fact that they are both from Western Pennsylvania and were apparently born in the same hospital three years apart. Cuban is worth over 6 billion dollars according to the basic internet search.

As a 40 year Indiana football fanatic, I'm in a paradise. All of that said, Cignetti could clearly win with much less money, IMO. He's a HOF coach chasing a 2nd natty.

You better tell that to the 85 Bears then, because they believe Cignetti cheated and built the Indiana empire overnight with the help of Cuban's millions, and that Kirk Ferentz (or any future Iowa coach for that matter) could never do the same without the help of said millions......................................(and that being take a 3-9 historically losing football program and go 11-2 the following year with a trip to the CFP)

Nope, can't be done at Iowa without at least $20 million more than what we have now, and that's only good enough to get us a ticket to the doorsteps of the CFP in this economy.

I think you lose in court if you try and cap outside payments to players.

that’s what the O’Bannon did, it opened the flood gates.

Schools can cap what they spend. I don’t think you can stop payments to players from outside entities.

Just so strange. Hawkeye athletics, especially football, are always so well supported. You'd think there would be more money to put towards the football's NIL fund. What could an extra 10 million do for this team?

Give credit where it's due though, most programs would plummet with such a big shift in landscape. But Kirk has established such a strong culture, we can be better than most other B1G schools with half of their NIL money, outside of the upper crust of the conference. I still believe this program deserves more money for how good and consistent it's been.

I know you were ecstatic when this new system emerged so you are getting your wish:

A multiple tiered pecking order in college sports.
A caste system.

Iowa belongs in the tier that spends only media revenue share on fb players...ie..15 million

We need new leagues, with spending limits in place for each member set by leagues.

Iowa belongs with Purdue,ISU,minny,NW, the Dakota schools.

Having a payroll less than half of others in the BIG is going to ultimately sink our ship...to the bottom.
Only USA sports league without a cap is mlb and they end up with Dodgers going for 3rd straight title.
Try to find a low tier salary team in final 4 of college fb playoff....not happening.
Only 50 + million payrolls need apply.

The cheap take is that Cignetti is winning because of Cuban's money. You can read that thought process literally all over the internet.

His first year in Bloomington he went 11-2 and made the CFP with a roster of 2 star players. That team's NIL wasn't in the top end of the sport. Cignetti is an excellent coach and that's the biggest key to his recipe.

Ferentz is handcuffed by a cruddy offense that doesn't produce at a championship level.

I suspect any limits on NIL would be struck down by the courts. They need to get a CBA in place.

It’s just a lazy take to say it was all Cuban’s money. Just look at his first two portal classes. Mendoza was the only top 100 portal player in either class.

0% chance that is Iowa’s NIL budget. Iowa had the least amount of players transfer out among all P4 programs. There is simply no way we could retain the roster at the level Iowa does with that budget.

Like I said, I just think these numbers aren’t accurate. At least for Iowa.
