I understand this point , but Nate’s logic is very flawed. JF refused to emphasize his best back in Kaytron, played Liam Clifford over Koby Howard, and refused to play younger linebackers over Deluca, who was a situational player at best. JF was loyal to his seniors to an extreme fault. Martin could have looked like Saquon in practice and still would never see the field. TS made necessary changes over time to stabilize the team, such as giving Kaytron the carries he deserved. He wasn’t going to completely de-emphasize Singleton by giving Martin or Wallace carries. Campbell probably comfortable with Hansen’s high floor (doesn’t lose yards) lower ceiling profile for now. And like Joe or James, there may be a bit of favoritism and trust in his longterm players. Overall most of the buttons Campbell is pushing are correct, but most of us probably disagree with this one. We were all right about Koby vs Liam last year!
Does Campbell know how dangerous it is to disagree with the BWICAC? Cracks in the foundation after 2 non conference games?

From what I've personally seen ...

Nate made a great point the other day ... 3 head coaches (JF, TS, and MC) have all seen QM live and in person much, much, more than any of us. They've all come to the same conclusion - QM doesn't have the talent, skill, and/or attitude to be the starting running back at PSU. Maybe they know something we don't?
With two of those coaches, JF and TS he was behind two NFL backs. Of course he wouldn't start over Kaytron or Singleton. They aren't here now, under MC his competition is Carson Hansen. HUGE difference

Yes at this position he is not. My guess is... as the season progress, MC will play Hansen less and less. I do think all coaches seem to have certain players that they do this with. Joe did it, James did it. Last year everyone was upset that Clifford played. With Joe I remember when he wouldn't play LaVar. I don't know why, but it happens. With Hansen he was the starter last year and clearly was anointed the starter throughout camp. The quicker MC makes the transition away from him the quicker our run game will become more explosive.

How do you explain that you know the best players and the guy with a reputation for finding and developing D1 football talent for a decade apparently disagrees?
It's pretty strange because ever since he's been hired, he's been touted here as damn near the perfect coach.

JF and TS saw Martin as a 195pound 2nd year running back playing behind two 230 pound, four year starters that just got drafted. What they saw really doesn't count.

MC is looking at a 3rd year 212 pound back versus a 216 pound 4th year kid that is most definitely is not going to get drafted. I feel so certain of this that the 4th year back will be a 5th year back at PSU next year.

Anyone is going to be very hard pressed to say that Martin is not as athletic as Hansen, and if one of them is a NFL running back, it will start to show next year when Martin is starting and getting the majority of the snaps at some other P4 school, because if he doesn't get snaps at PSU his year, he's crazy to play at PSU next year.

Im not going to say that Ive seen a ton of Hansen and People at ISU and OSU last year, but what I have seen, neither is close to as impressive as what Martin was against Clemson last year. He picked up 100 yards as a back that wasn't getting a lot of space. It was an impressive display, because the oline wasnt gashing anyone.

You can see the growth daily. The amount of new housing and traffic congestion has exploded. But, TN is full. No more room!
Yeah, our children, their spouses, and the grandchildren moved to the Nashville area over 10 yrs ago. Incredible growth since then. So many people moving in from California and other "Blue states" and have driven up cost of housing to horrendous prices. Downtown Nashville building high rise housing like weeds. I hope they never block the view of one of the mainstays of the skyline, "Batman building" (AT&T).

From what I've personally seen of the current RBs, Martin is definitely the most instinctive. Hansen will get you positive yards almost every time but won't break off many 10+ yard runs. Peoples looks the part but lacks the instincts of a really good back like Kaytron.
Agree, except I think Peoples has potential. I'd like to see them try using him for some outside runs

Perhaps it is attitude? The talent/skill seems to be there. The other factor, pass blocking. I recall Savon Huggins mentioning if they are not a solid pass blocker, they will not play. That might be the barrier to increased PT for QM.

You’re an ex-failed coach, so (in your opinion) who are the best AND most dependable PSU RB’s at this point?
Opinions are of no consequence. Just a bunch of fanboy wanna be coaches claiming they are better at talent evaluation than the entire coaching staff.
What would be my basis for making an evaluation? Watching games on TV?
Again, in a one score game, the coaches demonstrated who they think is #1 AND #2. Martin can run for 200 years against Buffalo. Buffalo gave up 540 yards to FIU. Anyone who thinks they are giving up on Hansen after last season (and 2025) is pissing on an electric fence.
After spending the whole offseason hearing about how perfect Campbell is....it only took 2 games for the BWICAC to find fault.

Maybe they do, but it's a certainty that you don't. I didn't say Martin should be starting did I? There could be a whole host of reasons, Campbell is not giving Martin more touches, but from what I've seen, being the most instinctive running back is not one of them.

Martin is unquestionably a great athlete. But he is not an instinctive RB. In fact in recruiting there was some questions about position. Not every great athlete is a great football player.

There shouldn't have been a single person here that didn't know Hansen and Peoples were 1/2 and will be

You think a scrimmage against a second team Clemson team isnt about the equal of what Hansen ran against most of last year. The bowl game with those players in it is a lot more competitive than the Blue White game or a game against Marshall or Temple.

Let it play out and it may take two years. Hansen is a solid college running back. Martin might only be a solid one as well, or he might be an NFL talent. Like I already said, if he doesn't play some this year. He aint coming back here next year to stay behind the same guys. Then one of two things happen. He's average (like Hansen) at some other school, or people are saying hes an NFL talent at some other school.

All he did in a glorified scrimmage against a decent P4 team that was a year removed for the college playoff is play like a 4/5 star which is what he was out of HS. Its not like he lit up a MAC school. I know stars dont mean everything, but most will agree they can be a indicator.

Do you think Hansen has looked like a really strong college running back, not only at PSU but at ISU, or do think hes decent? You of all people know if PSU is going to compete at the highest level. Decent doesnt cut it. You say crap like that all the time.

Me I rather see PSU fail with Martin than the other guys. Really, Id rather see them fail with Cam Wallace. Hes got some explosion as well. They have 4 solid backs. They question is. Do they have one really good one? If they do. I can tell you who it isn't.

Yeah, the Big XII is way better than a mediocre Clemson's backups. Bowl games are not competitive
Why did Martin put up better numbers than Hansen against Marshall?
Yes, Hansen has done exactly what I expected through 2 games. The fact you don't think he's decent is comical
You want Q to paly because you consider him a Penn Stater and you see Hansen as an Iowa State player not good enough--you're wrong but that's the problem

if he was a natural RB people would have been trying to move Singleton to WR

The big XII run defenses are mostly a joke.
Martin and Wallace put up comparible numbers with a backup oline when everyone in the place knew they were going to run the ball.
I already said Hansens is decent. The interesting thing is when did that become enough for you.
I could care less where Martin played last year. They need to get the ball to Bharmer more than they do, not just the red zone and Bacon isn't playing near enough on defense. I dont care where they played last year either.
Q has more natural talent. If you cant see that. You souldnt be taken seriously, which most on here already dont.

No, he's capable of playing either one. At 190 pounds, he probably should be a slot WR. At 215, he a RB, and your so goofy that you even suggest that a 5'10" 230 pound guy should be moved to WR. You really dont want to be taken seriously.

Hansen was All Big XII last year--that's better than decent. He also knows the offense the best and is by far the best in pass protection.
Couldn't* care less it what you mean
Why are you begging for Martin then not Peoples? It's illogical. It's pure bias because he was our recruit and stayed. He's done nothing in his career compared to Hansen. You like Bharmer because the other TEs are playing. You want Bacon to play because we lack other options
This is like people claiming Singleton had more talent than Kaytron even though Kaytron was the better back.
Oh no, anonymous people that know nothing about football dont' take me seriously--how will I ever sleep tonight

Hansen can’t win the argument this weekend. Buffalo is probably our weakest opponent of the season. If Hansen has a huge day, it’s because the defense is awful. If he struggles or even just has an average game, this topic becomes a 5 alarm blaze.

Because Peoples was RB3 at OSU and could meaningful snaps there. We really dont need OSU third teamers. I'd be happier if he got more snaps, but he's already shown he doesn't high upside.

Im only saying Martin might be, and he he aint going stay here if he doesnt play this year, because Hansen and Peoples are both coming back, because neither is NFL material.

and we both know that if Martin runs for 1000 yards at South Carolina or Missouri next year, youll be one the first saying Campbell and his staff screwed up. The discussion really aint worth having for a year, because Martin will be playing a lot somewhere next year. It might even be PSU.

So because Peoples was at Ohio State we don't need him but need Q who was a third teamer here...but I'm wrong and this has nothing to do with Q coming to then staying at Penn State

Then Martin needs to earn playing time which clearly he hasn't been about to do

I assure you I won't be saying that if he leaves. I've never said anything like that--ever. Take notes for next year if he does leave.

And, yes, he may be next year. If Hansen is as "decent" as you claim then Martin should have no issue winning the role here.

Hansen and Peoples would be a lot better served if Tagwell would stop doing reviews that keep saying what they cant or dont appear to be able to do, or is he clueless because he doesnt think Singleton should have a been a WR too. Is our entire fan base this clueless?
Donaldson was brought in to be a short yardage back--he had 10 TDs last year.
Bo Jackson was the only younger guy that beat him out--you comprehend he's an elite back, right? No?
So, Q being behind Allen and Singelton is impressive but Peoples being behind Jackson and a goalline back means he sucks
It's okay to admit you just like Q because he came here out of HS and stayed when he could have left--valid reasons to like him without unnecessarily attacking our other players
