We got around to watching it this weekend. Glad I watched even though there weren't a lot of surprises or plot twists based on my assumptions in the earlier posts.
I could be wrong here, but was it not unusual how normal she was acting right up until she killed herself? I feel like the Director either didn't do a good job of conveying that, or maybe that's not abnormal behavior for someone about to kill themselves and I just don't know enough about the psychology of suicide. She went for a drive and then told the elderly lady she was staying with (Diane) she was feeling better?
If you wanted to kill someone and make it look like a suicide, doing it in the jurisdiction of Robeson County law enforcement is about the smartest decision you could make. IYKYK.
JP Miller is scum, and a giant pu$$y to boot. The theatrical crying and wailing was beyond ridiculous for a grown man. If Mica had been my sister, he'd have been beaten so badly before it ever reached the point it did that he'd have never been physically capable of giving a sermon again. The men in Mica's life failed her pretty badly by allowing a weasel like JP to continue abusing her.
I was raised in a good church and had a great experience growing up in it, but after I became an adult I drifted away to become the agnostic/atheist I am today. The farther removed you get from a church, the more you have a hard time understanding how people let themselves get so brainwashed. The whole time my wife and I were just aghast at how stupid all of these people were. Even the lady who was his substitute pastor and Charlotte, the friend, were completely blinded even though they seemed like otherwise competent individuals. Everyone knows that religions prey on stupid people, but it's more surprising to me when they make smart people believe stupid things.
How could you listen to someone like JP talk for more than thirty minutes and not know immediately that he was a theatrical con man? I just don't get it.
I believe the term the journalist at the end used was "murder by suicide," and that's a perfect encapsulation of what happened here. A shame that justice will likely never be served to JP.
