Iowa was flat or Iowa State hit a home run with their coach.

ISU lost everybody, has no money, and hung with a very well funded big ten team.
Been happening all over college football so far this year. Okie State went through the same type of rebuild and just beat Oregon, a team they lost to 69-3 a year ago.

Now let’s see how ISU looks over the next three months when they aren’t playing with a giant chip on their shoulder and fired up for a rivalry game after hearing all week from the media that they didn’t have a shot. I still see 4 or 5 total wins for that team.

From a confidence reason alone it was a big win but still a lot to figure out. Why they could run the ball better than us when I thought that would be our biggest advantage. DJ only getting 2 catches and Diaz with 3 yards in the 2nd half...too many punts not getting caught and leaving us with crappy field position. Goal line offense still a major struggle also.
agree here--won a game and still can show things to work on--
I tought this game would be close from an experience factor--Iowa is the youngest team in the big 10 as far as games played and has like 5 srs.

ISU had like 11-12 sr. players--one of which was a 7th yr guy. Their guys had a lot more game experience across the lineup that Iowa

I think a lot of us forget that we have the least amount of returning experience in all the B1G and one of the lowest amount of returning experience in all of P4. You can’t microwave experience…just have to stack snaps and hope we can learn from Ws rather than Ls. So far so good.

I also think because of the QB competition, Hank hasn’t gotten the requisite 1 reps to this point that he would have gotten if there were no competition, so it’s not surprising that he’s off on his deep balls so far…those plays are so dependent on timing.

We’ll get there…my hope now after seeing more games is I think we’ve got a better than avg shot to steal 2 of the first 3 games to start conference play and Illinois and Minn look very beatable as well. 10 wins definitely in play.

I'd pump the brakes on calling out run blocking. ISU's coaches went all-in on stopping the run. You can have the best OL in the country but those 5 guys aren't going to be able to effectively block 8-9 guys.
Which opened the door to a whopping 190 yards and zero touchdowns through the air.

“Houston, we [may] have a problem….”

In other news, I really like this D, especially the back 7 and we have a budding star in Buffington - dude was all over the field, some Jack Campbell to his game and he is really fast. Didn't see the 3-3-5 last night to my knowledge yet the DL will come along and another tune up chance next week in UNI.
Not sure I've seen this much speed for Iowa on the D side in a very long time, that LB room is gonna be a problem for opposing teams for awhile with Buff/Reis/Weiss/Weivoda/Manson, etc. Should get Brown at SS back soon and Phillips maybe good to go for Mich + rest Moulton next week if you can.
Good for Hank last night, took a lot of crap for that Indiana game last year myself included and had his best throw as a Hawk to Diaz to respond after being down by 10. Tony will get a ton of targets and attention and as Hank grabs more and more QB1 snaps, he'll get better too...not sure if we were simply outmanned on the OL last night in the run game or if we simply were getting beat..

One more thing..go back and watch our first TD...#53 Myslinksi comes in on Goal line...whiffs on the snap count and #0 from ISU punctures the backfield immediately. Moulton slides over and makes a huge block otherwise that is a loss and 4th and Goal from the 5-yard line. Incredible little things yet Myslinksi has to be better, wow, a huge play there too..video below..

If nothing else can we please stop wearing the black pants with the traditional home jerseys? It just looks dumb and like we're trying to keep up with everyone else's alt uniforms. We have the best unis in college football. Just keep it with the gold pants/black stripe. If we're going to wear alt unis make them actual alt unis like tOSU in 2017 or Minnesota in 2015. Those are the only alt unis that have been any good.
Players picked it. Their choice.

I reeeeeeally hope you aren't blaming James for foolishly allowing himself to be picked up by 3 guys and dragged across the field right in front of the refs.
He certainly should have gotten the ball and not let it roll like that. We lost 15 or 20 yards.

I agree we should've done more through the air. Just saying I'm not going to call out our OL for not being able to run block 8-9 guys.
I think the difference is that last year it didn't matter. If Iowa needed a couple of yards on a sneak they got a couple of yards on a sneak. Zero push yesterday meant 2 stuffs when all Iowa needed was half a yard and one of those resulted in a turnover on downs. The OL pass blocking was good, but they weren't able to move anybody off the line yesterday.

I missed the NIU game, but watching last night’s contest was “meh”, at best. Both lines were thoroughly dominated most of the game, though Iowa’s offensive line seemed to have worn down ISU by the end game of the game. Aside from Buffington and Diaz everyone else was lackluster at best. Coaching was woeful. This has all the makings of another 8-4 or 7-5 season.

The upper echelon of the B1G beats that ISU team by at least 21 points. So Iowa is exactly where they have always been.

I noticed in the game thread another poster commented that the team didn't look very intense coming out on the field in the swarm and I got the same vibe. Body language can tell you alot. I thought the first half played out that way. Iowa State came out aggressive and acted like they wanted it more. We made good adjustments in the second half coming out throwing to open up the running game enough to get the win along with a good performance from the defense.

It will take better to continue to win against a good young coach in Ames trying to make his mark. That very much includes Lester who had me scratching my head last night figuring out our game plan on offense.
You say "A good young coach in Ames" - hardly! Rogers is forever an a**-hole in Hawkeye Nation for his uncalled for F-bomb comments directed at Iowa last winter at a basketball game in Ames.

We also had a Rimmington Award winning Center hiking the ball and leading the push.

Really hope we get a good glimpse of both QBs this weekend. Some of the play calling was a bit bewildering, and I can't fault Brown for some of that. Read option looks to be progressing, it would be nice to get some more RPO in involved as well.

10:09, hit RVZ
34:40, need to give him a chance to catch this
35:07 can't fault, RVZ open as well
Probably the best executed drive
51:45, this was a great play call and a well executed throw
52:29, there it is
101:33 good lord, DJ 1 on one with CB, you need to hit that drag route down the middle.
107:42, great play, great execution
128:17, finally found RVZ again, nice look
1:30:06, that's a pick six if it gets through
2:12:42 great pass

Last night was the perfect example of why so many of us hate this game and don't want to play it anymore, or at least play it on a 2 years out of four schedule.

Every year ISU throws everything they have at this game. Iowa plays it like just another game on the schedule. It turns out hard fought and tight, way closer than it should be.

At the end of it Iowa gets zero credit nationally for this game. Yeah, it was on NBC primetime, opposite OSU v Texas. Do you think anybody outside Iowa was actually paying attention to this game? I did not see a single mention of it on any post game shows.

High risk, no reward game. Zero credit given for winning a game that Iowa should. No joy in winning, just relief.

Time to play some different P4 OOC game.
I disagree. Iowa moved up 3 spots in the AP Poll, after beating a team they were favored by 14.5. What other kind of nationwide credit are you looking for?

And why would Iowa play this game like it's just "another game," when the week before they beat Northern Illinois by 40? Did they get all jacked up and throw everything they had at NIU?
