Joe’s Pizza Vauxhall definitely #1. I think Portnoy is afraid of Joe.Do yourself a favor and don't. Here's my rough top 10 -
1- Joes Famous Pizzeria (Vauxhall)
2- Forte (Caldwell) (Grandpa pie no garlic extra sauce)
3- Third Proof (Montville) (New Haven pie)
4- PizzaLand (North Arlington)
5- Delorenzo’s (Robbinsville)
6- Joe and Pat’s (Staten Island)
7- Vinnie’s (Millburn)
8- Sally’s Apizz (New Haven)
9- Angeloni’s (Caldwell) (Thin)
10- Columbia Inn (Montville)
11- Nancy’s Townhouse (Rahway)
12- Calabria (Livingston)
Yea Joey is a friend of mine. But if he was scared he should’ve rated him higher than 7.9. One of Portnoy biggest under-ratings. Because the undercarriage isn’t rock hard. He over-prioritizes that, but hey it’s just an opinion and that’s his.Joe’s Pizza Vauxhall definitely #1. I think Portnoy is afraid of Joe.![]()
Any relation to Matthew Bevilaqua? Can't believe no one has mentioned Reservoir Tavern in Parsippany. Old school place. Terrific pizza and old school italian food. Joe Bevacqua's family owns it (SHU grad in 1985). Not saying it is the best but its been very good for many years. Angeloni's is very good. Star Tavern still very good. Calabria is good but it did not deserve the high rating Portnoy gave it. Forte should not be on anyones list IMO but its a matter of individual taste.
We will have to agree to disagree. That pie is the definition of pizza perfection.Forte's pizza was pedestrian at best. Yes I've had the grandpa and grandma pizza - still pedestrian.

Ok, so on your recommendation I got the grandpa pie at Forte. My review of the pizza is that it’s copying Angeloni’s Thinny thin pizza but in a square form. It’s thin crust with the well done cheese crust.Have you had the grandpa pie?? If not you can’t make a statement like that until you do. It’s mind blowing. Some days I prefer it to sex.
Strongly disagree on Frank Pepe’s which is pretty average.
Not familiar with Tony D’s I’ll have to put it on the list.
I appreciate you trying it, but I couldn't disagree more. It's nothing like Angeloni's. Far more tasty, better sauce, more cheese, different shape, different style. Angeloni's is very good but can tend to be very dry since it's so thin. If you don't eat it right away you're eating a dried cracker. Forte grandpa pie is the pizza I live for. I actually think it's similar to DeLorenzos in central jersey, which is one of the best pies ever.Ok, so on your recommendation I got the grandpa pie at Forte. The problem is that it’s not nearly as good as Angeloni’s. Something tastes off and I think it’s the mozzarella. Overall, just an average pizza like the rest of the food at Forte.
Talking about quacks, when I was still working I was looking for an old email and in my search, I found a response I wrote to some writer who didnt give Vics a good enough review. I must have written about 2 pages, proving some quacks have too much time on their hands lol.
Delucias is another one I just don’t understand. Massively overrated. Average at best and way too thick of a crust.
Papas is nothing special either but not bad.
Same for Contes.
Star Tavern legitimately belongs on there IMO, I didn’t include them on my tops but it is a quality pizza.
Delorenzo’s is exquisite and could’ve easily been #1 on my list too. One of the best pies ever conceived by mankind.
Agree to disagree. Had it in the last few years and couldn't eat more than a slice or two. It was a strange crust, far too thick, and just no taste. Sauce and cheese lacking. But to each their own. Honestly I don't even think it's average. I guess just a style thing. You're way off on Delucias, though you can't even get in there now, thanks to Portnoy.
Funny thing when I go to Angelonis, I don’t get the thinny thin. I get the regular which is outstanding and is what I prefer. If you like a grandpa pie, try the drunken grandma at Tony D’s. But as long as u like Forte, enjoy! Btw, from your pictures, I’d rather eat the pizza you are cooking than Forte’s.I appreciate you trying it, but I couldn't disagree more.
