So they studied Iowa's offense from a game four years ago that was before Tim Lester joined the Iowa staff as OC?

Bold move.
if he's actually using sdsu's defense as a template that's almost an astounding admission that his talent is at that level...i don't think i've ever heard a coach say something like this, so i suspect it's just gamesmanship to try and get lester to waste time and plan for that D

So I point out your complete B.S. take and now I'm a Cyclone fan? 😂 Just take your L and move on. Or learn more about DI Football before you deflect.
Super another narcissist on here who thinks his opinion trumps everyone elses. That's fine, I learned what the ignore button was for with eyes. See ya..✋

Fine. Christ the nit picking on here is over the top. Has Iowa State been a better team in the Kirk Ferentz era, or the Hayden Fry era?Is that easier to define?
Off the top of my head, I would say ISU was decent-good 4-5 years out of Fry's 20 years. Maybe 7-8 years out of the 26 that KF played them. So yes, SLIGHT edge in difficulty to KF. Hayden was 15-5 vs them.
KF 14-12
It is the single worst blemish on Kirk's tenure as HC

So basically Fry lost to every decent ISU team he played. I'd also disagree about the 7-8. They've been decent (and some years better then that just in Campbell tenure) In ten season Campbell won at least 7 games every year but two, (3-9 his first year, and 4-8 another). Dan MacCartney had five seasons where he won between 7-9 games as the HC. They've been much better for Kirks time then they were when Fry was there after Bruce left ISU and went to OSU.

Ferentz vs ISU coaches and their overall records.
McCarney overall during KF's years: .484.
Kirk was 2-5 vs him in those years
Chizik .208 in his two years. KF 1-1 vs Chizik
Rhoads .368. KF 5-3 vs Rhoads
Campbell .567. KF 6-3. Ironically KF over achieved vs Campbell compared to his success vs the other three.
Chizik and Rhoads were as bad as Criner/Walden

I don't think they can learn much from this game. IIRC, the Hawks only had one scholarship WR available and a not-ready-for-primetime OL. Plus, its BF's simplified offense rather than Lester's.

IIRC Hayden lost to clown college in 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1998. That's four losses by my math. Don't forget that 1983-1997 15-year winning streak.

Yep.

You can acknowledge that Iowa State improved over time, and had some really good individual players at times. Iowa Teams versus Iowa State Teams? Big time nod to Iowa (even with some of the worst QB's in the history of DI Football).

You can also say that you have to play the games, so their chances of winning one every now and again are certainly possible, not likely, but possible. And yet The Captain is a PATHETIC 14-12 against them. With Norm and Phil Parker in tow to boot. SMH

Older Iowa State fans still have nightmares about Hayden Fry. They see puppies and rainbows when they think about Kirk Ferentz. As previously stated, Kirk is the best thing to ever happen to Iowa State Football. Any talk of putting up a Kirk statue in Iowa City, might be undone.................................. by Ames doing it first. (maybe Pollard's last act before he departs, gotta be better than a billboard).

The best teams ISU had during the Fry years were 3 6-5 teams. They had no teams that went to bowl games during this time. ISU winning percentage for Fry was 34%.

Now look at Ferentz 15 Bowl teams 3 Matt Campbell teams ranked in the College Football Final and a winning percentage of 46%. And the 46% is impacted by playing 15 bowl games.

Overall I agree with your take, but that's not quite right regarding ISU during the early Fry days. Donnie Duncan had some good things going in Ames. The Cyclones went 7-4 in 1980 and were ranked one week at #19. In 1981 they were ranked for four weeks, peaking at #11 on Oct. 31. They dropped off in 1982, but still beat the Hawks for the third consecutive year. The wheels fell off during the back half 1982 season and Duncan got fired. The string of bad hires began and Fry's guys never lost to them again until 1998.

Fun fact: Hawk assistant Jay Niemann was a linebacker for ISU during the Duncan years.

HMB, I don't think Duncan was fired, he quit. Quit about a week before the old February national letter of intent signing day. He screwed ISU.

Duncan went on to become AD at Oklahoma (where he came from) and gave Barry Switzer whatever he wanted. I seem to recall something about players shooting firearms in the dorms? Maybe not as bad as Nebraska in the 90s, but pretty bad.

Teams didn't go to bowl games at 6-5 back then. 8-3 was iffy back in the 70s. There were <20 bowl games til the late 80s at least.

Thanks. I couldn't remember why he left and didn't see anything in a quick search, but wrote fired anyway. It's possible he decided to quit so he wouldn't be fired, but who knows? Maybe health issues? There's a four-year gap between him leaving ISU and taking the AD job at OU. It doesn't look like he ever coached again, even as an assistant, despite having some success at ISU.

Sports Reference has ISU at 6-5 in 1980.

They ended up 5-5-1 in 1981 losing to a 6-5 San Diego St and a 2-9 Kansas St. Tied Oklahoma and Beat Missouri both top 10 when ISU played them but ended up 19th and 20th in the final poll. Beat West Texas St 17-13. Strange year for ISU.

Once again complete BS. Do your research. 1982 Iowa was 7-4, 1984 7-4-1, 1993 6-5, and 1997 7-4. Every one of these teams went to a bowl. Hayden began coaching in 1979. ISU went to 4 bowl in the 70's with 3 8-3 teams and a 5-5-1 team in 1972.

Check the 1982 and 1984 Iowa teams both went to bowls. Iowa was 7-4 in 1982 and 7-4-1 in 1984 when they went to bowls.
Prior to Hayden fry and in the 70’s bowls were hard to come by unless you had like one loss or something. You were headed to rose or cotton or something. There just were very few bowls. After about 1980 they started inventing bowls out of nowhere.

14 players transferred from WSU, who is a member of the G6 now. The PAC-12 is resurrecting this season, but they are a shell of what they used to be. The WSU transfers are mostly on the defensive side. Which is why I said I think their defense has some salt.

Most if not all of their good players transferred once the PAC 12 collapsed. They were also a 5-7 team their last year in the PAC, and a 6-6 G6 team last year. I'm not really worried about the WSU transfers.
Well how did that work out for Oregon
