LSU vs SEC

They'd just replace LSU with Florida State or Clemson and keep on rolling. LSU isn't Alabama.
BS. Neither FSU nor Clemson would supply nearly enough new TV sets to the existing footprint. Both are already in SEC Network territory. Trading LSU for either of them would be a net loss in terms of TV revenue. Both of those schools are not going to be able to go anywhere for 5-10 years, anyway.

The SEC would be just fine without LSU.
“Just fine” doesn’t mean that each member school wouldn’t take a hit financially with their exit. And that’s all this is about. In this age where everyone has $20 million less than they did before, due to the revenue share, nobody is going to be on board with cutting revenue.

They’d put it up for a vote for the other 15 members, and once ESPN made it real damn clear what an LSU-less SEC would mean for their revenue share payouts for the TV deal, the motion would get zero votes.
The SEC would be just fine without LSU. They could go get a blue blood from another conference with relative ease and keep going.

SEC isn't kicking LSU out of the league. But I think what they will do if they ever get the chance is kick Lane Kiffin out of the league. As of now, they can't though. But if he ever screws up, they'll come down hard.

Also FSU and Clemson TV rights already belong to ESPN at a relative bargain price. Don't see it ending well for the SEC if they try to steal what already belongs to ESPN and resell it to them at a higher price.

They did for a few games. Then the court ruling got overturned and they didn't play them again. But precedent set for no penalty for playing former pro player under a court order allowing him to play.
Their relative inaction last Spring has no bearing on the current situation. If anything, they can cite it as the impetus for taking a firm stance this time around. They weren't going to let it happen again, and made their position very clear to LSU.

I'm still not sure why signing a contract with an NFL team but never appearing in a game is the line that cannot be crossed, while other SEC teams have players who went to minicamps.

I never ever watch Finebaum, but Im tuning in today. He said Saturday if a vote were held right then he believed LSU would get expelled. I was thinking, "shut up, Finebaum"...and then this happens.

And all are equally ineligible under the rules.
The funniest thing about all of it is that going through an NFL training camp doesn’t really mean anything at all, except that they got paid (very little) to play football for a little while.

I’m not a Kiffin shill, but these players really are no different from 100% of P4 players who are all - make no mistake - also being paid to play football.

The outrage is being manifested only by those who are all still trying to gaslight themselves into believing that we aren’t operating in a purely pay-for-play system in college sports.

Clay Travis reporting that he has been told that all 15 of the non-LSU schools are ready to terminate membership if those players play.
Well if there's one person I trust to have the correct information when there's something going down in the SEC, it's Ross Dellinger, Pete Nakos, Brandon Marcello, John Talty, Pete Thamel Clay Travis.

NCAA could have let these guys play AND still preserved amateurism. Them making a bad decision is expected.

But seeing Sankey die on this hill says to me that something else is afoot......they either are conspiring to get PSA passed, or they are just flat out fed up with LSU's BS. Occam's Razor says it is the latter.

Sankey is tired of being 17ed with by Landry. It's the modern day loss of institutional control. But I think he could have stood down too, didn't have to get into this battle, and no one would have thought the worse of him.

Agree. Not that I really care all that much, but I really do think these players are getting screwed. Actually, I do care about the 2 or 3 players we have that aren't eligible as of now. We could really use them.

On paper - I side with the players. Some of these guys would have never gone pro if they knew they could have played an extra year of college. Like @CharlieWinfield has been saying, the NCAA screwed up by announcing the 5 for 5 rule this early. Announce it sometime this fall (like October) - it's a moot point - especially for football. There might have been some pushback from basketball and baseball players but not as much as football. Although LSU basketball might have been the entire Knicks roster.

Stupid question at this stage of the game but has LSU just totally gone rogue on the SEC and just told Sankey to FO when he requested something from them ?

Yeah right. The Big 10 isn't touching LSU with a 50-foot pole. All the power conferences are united on this. LSU can try to go independent, but they won't be able to schedule games with anybody worth a crap. They are not Notre Dame. They have a regional following that is enhanced by them being in the SEC. LSU needs the SEC way more than the SEC needs LSU.
I would love to watch the righteous indignation from the Big10 not wanting dirty old LSU and Lane Kiffin, with voting members such as...

<drumroll please>

Penn State (Jerry Sandusky)
Michigan (the sign stealer, whatever his name was)
Michigan State (does the name Larry Nassar ring a bell?)
Ohio State (Richard Strauss)
Rutgers (Mike Rice)
Maryland (DJ Durkin)
etc.
etc.

They make us who get hammered for buying Kevin Fant some tires look downright angelic at this point.

My guess is they will force a televised apology from Lane and him to kiss the ring OR if he refuses LSU to terminate his contract. LSU will not be expelled. They will fall in line first. If Lane won't he will fall on the sword. He is not bigger than the SEC. Eta, they might wanna give Lane a piss test. Also the B10 has some kind of bogus academic standards for acceptance that I doubt LSU can pass I believe

Its going to take more than a mea culpa from Lane. The SEC says there is a "lack of institutional control" over the athletic department. The conference will need to be satisfied that coaches answer to the AD, and the AD answers to the President. And the Governor needs to butt out.

Would be funny if the only way to stay in the SEC is to fire Lane. I suppose that would be firing "for cause" if his contract even allows that.

Guys. This isn’t about LSU saying FU and rostering and playing those 2.guys now. It is about Lane making contact with NFL coaches to find out if they have guys like these 2 that are talented but not enough to make an NFL roster at this time. It is about Lane actually “recruiting” pro signees back to college to play for LSU. Notice that LSU is the only target in this. Because they are the only program that had a coach directly recruiting pro signees off NFL rosters. And apparently these weren’t the only 2 he asked about.

What if, instead of kicking LSU out of the conference, they just declared Kiffin ineligible to coach in the SEC?

One school - Florida or Florida State - had a QB who had previously been a professional baseball player. The rule probably should be written to include having been a professional in any sport, not just the one they're playing in.

One could also argue that college players are professionals anyway, given revenue sharing, NIL, etc.

Does it matter how often it happens, though?

What’s the difference between playing the same sport professionally that you’re going back to college for, or a different one?

2nd question - if these guys were juniors that had a year of eligibility remaining, got drafted but then got cut, does that change anything.

At this point, it’s all ridiculous. Guys from NFL going back to college was a widely predicted scenario when all this deregulation started happening. And here we are.

College football, as a holistic entity (schools, players, administrators, and fans) asked for this. Lane Kiffin is simply doing the same thing he did with the faking injuries thing…..blatantly and unapologetically exploiting a loophole that even he himself probably thinks is a ridiculous thing to exist, but while its there he’s going all out to try and win.

This, and there must be something else LSU has done that we don't know about. It takes a lot to get college presidents to grow this much spine.

Didn’t alabama actually play a pro player in basketball games? One sided for sure.
Didn't he actuality play. Not just training camp. You're saying these guys who have never played an NFL game which includes preseason can't play but a guy can get a sixth year and the same legal process was involved

I agree he shouldn’t be eligible but people have gotten extra eligibility due to injury or sicknesss. Legit or not.

that isnt even in the same universe of people who have been practicing with nfl teams coming back
How many of those are denied by the ncaa then went before a local court judge and then was allowed to play?

My gut says this is going to end with a resignation letter from Sankey rather than LSU being expelled.
I wouldn't be upset but he had to do something. It's just interesting that it's now and with this. I get it. Why not earlier with the Chambless getting a sixth year? Why not last year with Alabama playing their guy in basketball. I could go on. He drug his feet and now that the world is watching he's trying to act tough. He needs to go.

Sankey is doing what 15 SEC Presidents want him to do. His job is safe even if this goes sideways.

They have scheduled a meeting on this for Thursday. If nothing changes between now and then, LSU will get expelled. I am certain it will not come to that, though.
