With no Rutgers game Saturday I went to Georgia to see Athens. They crushed Tenn State. Some observations of a top football program vs. RU:

1) Up 28 points their backup QB came in halfway through the 2nd QUARTER. Still 1st half. At RU even in blowouts we never get our backup time except 1 drive.

2) Hot Dot $3.50, water $2, soda/powerade $3.50 … somehow they manage to have NIL without charging $7 for a hot dog and $5 for water.

3) They have their own app called “Glory Glory App” where they post their game highlights. It’s $20 a MONTH. Their fans pay $20 a month just to watch the HIGHLIGHTS..

4) it was 97 degrees (I left just before halftime), people passing out everywhere, more people in the concourse than seats after the 1st quarter. The crowd peaked at 95% full in the 1st q. That said there were some empty seats (say 85,000 out of 93,000) - they athletic department EMAILS season ticket holders if their tickets weren’t scanned at the game! If you don’t show up even in 100 degrees against FCS you get an email from the ticket office!

5) Kirby Smart’s playbook was screen passes to the RB, wide receiver screens, end arounds, QB rollout passes. They didn’t run between the guards once I don’t think. If Rutgers playbook and Georgia’s playbook are in a venn diagram, the circles don’t intersect. There is not a play they ran that we ever run, and none of our 4 plays are in their playbook.

6) They ran actual punt return plays, like had 3 guys run back to block in formation, and returned every punt for 20+ yards. A dream under Schiano that will never be reality.

Seeing a top-5 team in person and being able to actually root for them/watch them (rather than when we play top 5 teams and focused on what RU is doing) made me realize that we are playing an entire different sport and it’s been that way for a while.

2) Water is $5.50 at SHI. A DD iced coffee was $7.00. I forget if we are allowed to bring in water or not, but I ain't paying $5.50 for a water.

4) Rutgers has a lot to learn about ticket sales and fan interaction. Good idea to e-mail those that did not show.

5) No surprise

6) Greg may be the only coach/program that does not return punts/kickoffs.

2. We are NOT allowed to bring any food or drink into SHI unless you sneak it in. I purchased some Aunt Annie's pretzel nuggets Thursday night. rang up: $14.62 Price at the mall? $6.49. I won't be making that mistake again.
4. I didn't get a survey post game, did anyone else? I see the new fan ambassadors around helping people out and offering to help. That was a big plus.
6. We returned on punt on Thursday, proving it can be done (as long as there is no hold that brings it back 30 yards)

I went to Auburn at Georgia about 10 years ago. What an experience all around, if only New Brunswick could be more like the campus side of Athens or Columbus.

Funny enough, the highlight of the actual game was their young punt returner Mecole Hardman.

Yes it was pretty neat that Georgia’s stadium is literally attached to their student center / dining hall / bookstore. Imagine if our stadium was where Brower is now basically. That said, pluses and minuses - Georgia had basically no tailgate scene (a couple tents set up on their quad) and all the parking is in decks on the outskirts of campus far away from the stadium. Good for students, but bad for the traveling fans. Our grass parking/tailgate lots with the boardwalk setup in the middle is one of the great scenes in college football that not many know about bc the team stinks.

We have 5 plays, not 4. Don’t forget the play where the kicker tries to run for a first down on 4th and 8 and doesn’t even get close to the LOS. It remains to be seen when that play will be called this year, but it will for sure.

My buddy lives in Miami, coming up for the USC game for our annual reunion. When I told him tickets were $140 he almost choked. He said you can get season tickets for Miami Hurricanes starting at $407. Thats NJ though.

I am always amazed at people that live in NJ and complain about the cost of living there lol. Rutgers isn't unique from most other blue states. Those are prices you see at the Rose Bowl or Coli. No different.

When was the last time RU was up 28 points in the 2nd quarter? You can't give reps in close games or the fans will go ape **** if the back up throws picks and the game is lost. Come on now.

It's not even a Georgia app. It's a 3rd party app!

I like the ticket shaming on non-scans! I’m sure Rutgers does track that though in terms of attendance and forecasting.

I would love to just see a different scheme on offense and defense that the ***** we have been running for years. There is so much creativity left out of either playbooks where we can open up more. We ARE the definition of insanity when it comes to coaching insisting on the same playcalling expecting different results. I want to see us stop a running QB, throw a solid screen pass, return a punt or kickoff, and stop seeing our best first down offense being a personal foul on QB.

To be fair, I was a grad student at Miami for 6 years in the early to mid/late 90s and even at the old Orange Bowl stadium which was much closer to campus they struggled with attendance unless it was FSU. Now the stadium is 45 minutes north so they need to try and get people to go which would explain lower ticket prices.

My RU season tickets in section 129 are $336 each. RU charges a lot for single games to try to encourage mini-plan and full season sales.

I've been to a few games in Athens. Great place to see a game. Fun college town and a lovely campus. As someone above said, the tailgating is spread out if not sparse, but still one of my favorite venues for a college football game. I also attended a UGa game at Auburn about 10 years ago. Auburn also is a fun venue--decent college town, nice campus, welcoming fans. Both are very different experiences than Rutgers home games.
